A tribute to Donna LevienBy Shelly Fehrenbach

How do you define the game of bridge? Forsome it’s that adrenaline rush you feel when youbid and make 6NT – followed by the inevitabledevastation when you open the traveler, andeveryone else has bid and made seven! For others,it’s the fame and celebrity when you win a nationaltitle.

For Donna Joy Levien and all who knew andloved her, bridge was the one activity that kept herengaged and involved right until she passed awayin November of 2003. It was at the bridge table thatshe continued to show her unparalleled sense ofhumor, keen wit, impeccable dress and herenduring love for her myriad group of friends.

Donna was passionate about the game. Shecouldn’t wait to try a new convention, althoughwith Donna it was usually an unconventionalapplication. She was an extraordinary woman whoplayed bridge the way she lived: to the fullest, with

vigor, sensitivity, exuberance – and often by herown rules.

For those who knew her, she will be foreverloved and missed. For those who did not have theprivilege, it should be comforting to know that youare involved in a game that helped sustain thequality of life for a very special woman.

Today’s Stratified Open Pairs is named inDonna Levien’s honor.

Snip, snipDavid Berkowitz and Larry Cohen are great

players, especially in pair games. As JayApfelbaum can tell you, however, they put theirpants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us.The following deal from the second qualifyingsession of the Life Master Pairs is a case in point.Apfelbaum was playing with Ruth Grant.

Berkowitz started with the ♦K, switching tohis singleton club at trick two. The plan, as you cansee, was to win one of his high trumps, then putCohen in with a heart so that he could ruff a club.

Apfelbaum correctly read the situation, however, and he made the only play to keep fromgoing down: he played the ♦Q at trick two, tossinghis ♥Q. Berkowitz won the ♦A, but after theScissors Coup he had no way to reach Cohen’shand.

The club ruff went away and Apfelbaum endedup with plus 530 for making 3♠ doubled, curiouslygood for only 19 out of 25 matchpoints. HadBerkowitz and Cohen managed plus 100, thatwould have been worth 21 out of 25 matchpoints.

As you can see, an initial club lead by Northwould have been sufficient to defeat the contract. There would have been no Scissors Coup availableto Apfelbaum.

Stakgold also told how Lennie helped EdgarKaplan and Freddy Sheinwold to perfect theKaplan-Sheinwold bidding system. “It was such agood feeling when we won the Vanderbilt in 1958,defeating Edgar and Freddy in the final.”

Bill Eisenberg, who was a regular partner ofHarmon’s until he joined the Aces, was present alsobut did not speak because of time pressures.

Alan TruscottHave you ever been around Alan Truscott when

he is relaxed and feels like singing? Phillip Alderwondered how Alan ever remembered so manywords and verses. Alan is capable of going onforever with these ditties, all of which are richlyhumorous.

Alan has been a major force in New Yorkbridge over the years, but not just because of hisposition as bridge editor of the New York Times. Hehas worked hard for the New York unit, come upwith great ideas like the Battle of the Sexes, andconceived and worked up many other promotions.

Phillip told about Alan’s adjectival biddingsystem. “You are allowed one adjective with eachbid. So you could open with one marginal 1♥ andhear an opponent overcall one strong 1♠. Soundsinteresting.

bridge,” said Jill Levin. “We played other cardgames, but not bridge. When I was skiing, theywere looking for a fourth for bridge, and they knewmy mother was a world champion. So they thoughtthat meant I knew how to play. I agreed to play aslong as long as I could ski for free.”

Once she asked her mother what she should dowhen her partner opened 4♦. “Should I bid five orsix?”

“Neither,” said Gail. “That’s a weak bid.”“Not the way we play,” said Jill. “So she finally

taught me to play.” “I’m the only one who listened to my mother,”

said Penny Shane. “I became a lawyer instead ofplaying bridge. Mother told me to find something Ilove and then do it as much as possible – and that’swhat I did.”

Penny said that her mother used bridge to helpothers – “she has helped them to extend the life oftheir minds.”

“My mother is a truly great teacher,” said BradMoss. “She has the uncanny ability to make eachstudent believe they are being taught one-on-one.”He said he often thinks, “How would Mom handlethis?” when he faces a problem.

Andrew Moss told his mother a long-keptsecret – sometimes the children played bridge insecret so their mother wouldn’t know what theywere doing. “She’s done a great job raising fourchildren while having a highly decorated career.”

Joan GerardBobby Wolff told how Joan Gerard first

brought her skills to her unit, then her district andthen to the ACBL. “But she didn’t stop there – shewent on to the World Bridge Federation where shebecame the only woman to be named to theCommittee of Honor.” He told about heroutstanding work with the Junior program. “She’sone of the hardest workers we ever had on theACBL Board.”

Barbara Nudelman told about how the ThreeWitches came to be. “Joan, Jayne Thomas and I gotstarted together in 1980 and we bonded. We workedtogether and played together. It’s been great.”

As she accepted her award, Joan offered thistidbit. “Alan Truscott wrote about my marriage toRon Gerard, saying that a bridge player married abridge administrator. My question for Alan waswhich is which?”

Leonard HarmonProbably most of those present didn’t really

know who Leonard Harmon is, but the old-timersremembered. He was one of the best in the Fiftiesand Sixties.

Ivar Stakgold, his regular partner in the olddays, remembered the time he and Lennie stoppedin 3NT in the Vanderbilt while Al Roth and TobiasStone got to a slam that went down because of a badtrump break. When Harmon got the trophy, Rothasked if he could be the first to spit in it.

Celebrate Goodwillthroughout ACBL

Aileen Osofsky, chairman of the GoodwillCommittee, wants to have Goodwill Daycelebrated throughout the ACBL, not just atNABCs. She suggested the idea yesterday at theGoodwill reception.

She called attention to Tournament DirectorStan Tench, who was having a double celebration –his 75th birthday and his 50th anniversary as anACBL director.

Three outstanding World Bridge Federationofficials were present – President Jose Damiani ofFrance, former President Ernesto d’Orsi of Braziland Juniors Chairman Panos Gerontopoulos ofGreece.

Osofsky noted that Jayne Thomas and RalphCohen, who were too ill to attend the Springtournament in Reno, are back with us.

Family reunionIt was like a family reunion for Gail

Greenberg at the Goodwill Committee get-together yesterday. Her four children werepresent – Penny Shane, Jill Levin, Brad Moss andAndrew Moss. Penny had her tiny son Patrick inher arms. Danya Hayward, Andrew’s wife, andJennifer Sarti, Brad’s fiancee, were there. Sowere Jill’s children, Shane and Justin Blanchard. And of course Gail’s husband Jack was there, rooting her on.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both partnership cards must be identical. Both must include the first and last names of eachmember of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only the Standard American Yellow Card andmay use only standard carding. This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequentround after convention cards have been properlyprepared and approved by the director.

Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6 boardmatchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuinguntil the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

Saundra Jones’s students check their scoresafter the Bridge Plus+ game.

“but I love the game.”All her talk about bridge made her students at

Middle School 158 take notice, and she nowconducts bridge classes for them after school forfour hours a week in her regular classroom.

“They’re having a great time,” Jones says. The youngsters back her up on that.“I like bridge because it’s like a hobby, and it

helps me in logic,” says Julie Kim, 13.Angel Yim, 12, shows wisdom beyond her

years in pronouncing: “It’s mostly aboutpartnership, and it’s fun to work together – plus, it’scool to win.”

Michael Zhang, 13, adds: “It helps my memoryand it’s really fun.” Zhang, attending his firsttournament, notes: “It’s really exciting.”

Besides teaching bridge, Jones is also involvedin bridge administration. She is a member of theNassau Suffolk Bridge Association board ofdirectors. She sells bridge whenever she can.

“The game,” she says, “allows you to be incontrol. When you are bidding and playing, yourmind can’t be anywhere else.”

In her bridge classes, she notes, “all of life’slessons are learned there.”

SolowayContinued from page 1

teams has grown significantly.Says Soloway: “It’s tougher to win the

Spingold than the Bermuda Bowl.”A major factor in the change, most observers

agree, is the influx of top players from overseas.Stars from around the world are regular attendees atthe NABCs. Among them are the members of thevery strong team from Italy that nearly won theBermuda Bowl last fall in Monte Carlo. There arealso top players from Europe, Australia and the FarEast. Most NABCs, says Soloway, will feature 75to 80 of the top 100 players in the world.

The winning Spingold team last year, in fact, included two Polish stars: Cezary Balicki andAdam Zmudzinski.

In the amazing run of the Nickell team from1993 through 1999 – the team won six of sevenSpingolds in that period – their only loss came atthe hands of a squad captained by Grant Baze thatincluded Balicki, Zmudzinski and two other Polishplayers.

But, says Soloway, it’s not just the toughforeign players that make things tougher – thehomegrown players are much more polished thanthey used to be.

“It used to be if you bid well and took your tricksyou could win every match,” says Soloway. “Noweveryone bids well and the systems are good.”

“The fields are deeper now,” says Chip Martel, who won the 2001 Bermuda Bowl playing on theRose Meltzer team. “The rounds of 64 and 32 (inthe Spingold and Vanderbilt) used to be prettyroutine, but now there are many days when morethan one top team is upset.”

Says Bobby Wolff, an 11-time worldchampion: “The Spingold and the Vanderbilt haveboth gotten a lot tougher. The average-plus playersnow can beat you because they don’t beatthemselves as much as they used to.”

By the round of 16, Soloway says, “there are noweak teams.”

He notes that in the round of 16 in theVanderbilt this spring in Reno, the Nickell teamfound themselves facing a squad that includedClaudio Nunes and Fulvio Fantoni, reigning WorldOpen Pairs champions – and a Swedish star as well. The Nickell team won, but Soloway notes that thetop foreign players can be very difficult to playagainst. Nunes and Fantoni, for example, havedefensive carding agreements that make themextremely tough opponents.

Advances in bidding, Soloway notes, havehelped many players elevate their games.

“When I started there weren’t even splinterbids,” Soloway says. He recalls a team trials in SanFrancisco in 1965 in which half the field bid agrand slam missing five trumps to the king-jack. Heremembers that Eddie Kantar and Marshall Mileshad a special convention – a leap to 5♣ – thathelped them stay out of slam.

Soloway’s regular partner these days is BobHamman, the world’s No. 1-ranked bridge playersince 1985. Soloway acknowledges that while heand Hamman are better players than they were afew years ago, they now have to pace themselves asage becomes more of a factor (both players are intheir 60s).

“We have to slow down and work harder,” saysSoloway.

While it may be tougher to win the covetedtitles, Soloway says, he doesn’t regret it. In fact,Soloway likes the change: “It’s exciting to play allthese good teams.”

Happily tied for first with a star-studdedsquad: Dottie Kovel, Arthur Seelenfreund,Marjorie Vogel and Yoko Yagasaki.

The tie that bindsOn Thursday night, Yoko Yagasaki attended the

ACBL Hall of Fame banquet and heard JacquiMitchell introduce her longtime friend and partner,Amalya Kearse, as a new member of the illustriousgroup. Three days later, Yagasaki and threeteammates had the thrill of playing against the twobridge stars in the Clarence Johnson StratifiedSwiss Teams.

They lost a close match to the Mitchell-Kearseteam, but when the event was over, Yagasaki andher friends, a Strat B squad, were tied for first withthe legendary players. Both teams had 123 VictoryPoints.

It was an exciting moment for Yagasaki, ofYokohama, Japan; Dottie Kovel and ArthurSeelenfreund of Rye NY, and Marjorie Vogel ofNew Rochelle NY. Until two years ago, Yagasakilived in the New York City area, so she knows allher teammates.

Altogether the squad has only about 2200masterpoints – none more than 700 – and they hadnever played in an event with so many teams (82).

Their match against Mitchell, Kearse, PatriciaCayne and Karen Allison was a tight one, as themore experienced team prevailed 11-9.

Josh Donn and Joon Pahk were winners of theStratified Junior Scholarship Pairs Sundayevening. They each receive $500 scholarshipsas winners of Strat A. The Strat B winners,Gregory Ingolia and Jason Chiu of ofCambridge MA, receive $375 each. Pahk is astudent at Stanford University. Donn justgraduated from Rochester University in NewYork and plans to move to Los Angeles. Theyhad played only once previously in person, although they do have experience as onlinepartners. They play a strong club system withrelays.

Sathya Bettadapura decided his hand wasworth more than game when his partner raiseddiamonds. He cuebid his singleton heart andbecame even more excited when his partner, BruceTuttle, bid 4♠. Since he was looking at the ♠A, heknew it had to be the king-doubleton of spades. That’s all he needed – he leaped to the slam.

Making 12 tricks was easy – the opening leadwas a club. However, with a less helpful lead hecould try to find the ♥A onside. Failing that, hewould have had to guess the position of the ♣Q.

If North leads three rounds of diamonds, declarer ruffs and draws trumps. This reduces thedeal to a six-card ending where East has two spadesand four clubs, and South is squeezed.

However, at Rosenbloom’s table, North cashedtwo diamonds and shifted to a spade. Rosenbloomnow had only one chance for his contract. He tookthe spade (otherwise he suffers a ruff), drew trumpsand led a club, ducking when North played thequeen. When North was forced to exit with adiamond, Rosenbloom ruffed and ran his trumps tosqueeze South. Of course Rosenbloom was lucky tofind the singleton queen with North, but had Northheld any other singleton, declarer would have wonin dummy and then ducked a diamond! AgainNorth had to win and return a diamond, letting thesqueeze bite once again.

Bid ‘Em UpBy Barry Rigal

Those of you who know me well would besurprised to discover that I am a close relative ofKarapet Djoulikyan, the unluckiest man in theworld according to Victor Mollo in “Tales from theMenagerie.” This belief would be reinforced by ourexperience from the very first two deals of theSaturday pair games.

When I cashed the ♣A at trick one, declarerwas apparently reduced to finding the singleton ♠Kout of six missing spades – a solid 3% chance. . .and just take a look at those East cards.

On our next deal, North reached 6♥ off the♠A-K and the ♦A.

All this required was for East to hold the ♦Aand for the spades to break 8-0. I don’t really knowhow to estimate the chances for that, but one lookat the East-West cards should tell you that we wereheaded for minus 980.

The good news was that on the first handdeclarer ran the ♠Q, playing to pin the singletonjack or a defensive error. So he went down.

Peg Woller, South, and Joan Jackson, North, defended the next deal very well, I thought.

I reached 3NT as East on a low diamond lead todummy’s queen. I played a club to the queen – andPeg ducked! Now when I went after hearts, Joancould take the ♥K and clear diamonds. Then whenI finessed in hearts I finished with six tricks. If Peghad taken the ♥A I will certainly take eight tricks, and I might get nine if I can read the position.

A nice point on defense came up on this deal.

We misbid the hand to 3NT (though reaching4♥ is far from easy). On a spade to the jack andking, South returned the ♠8, covered all around.North exited with a low spade and my partner, EricLeong, alertly ducked the ♠7. Now the spade suitwas dead, so Leong emerged with plus 400 for anaverage result. Note that if North decides to play athird spade, it costs nothing to lead the ♠9,scooping up partner’s ♠7 and retaining the lead toclear spades.

Elahmady is one of Egypt’s top players. He hasrepresented his country in international play since1988. He and his regular partner, Tarek Sadek, havefinished second twice in the Cavendish InvitationalPairs.

Zia made the partnership with Elahmady afterhis team was knocked out of the top flight of theGrand National Teams. It was only the second timethey had played together, the first being in Jamaicain the Eighties.

Said Elahmady of Zia: “He’s a great player anda great partner.”

I opened 1♠ as West, and North overcalled 3♠,asking partner to bid 3NT if he had a stopper inspades. South complied, and it was up to me to findan opening lead. I didn’t want to give declarer atrick with his presumed ♠K, so I tried a lowdiamond, hoping partner had the ♦J. I didn’t like itwhen partner played the 9, but I felt a lot betterwhen declarer couldn’t beat the 9.

My partner, Nathan Glasser, duly returned aspade, and I won with the jack. Next I began tounblock my diamonds by playing the king.Declarer took it with dummy’s ace and ran someclubs as I unblocked my ♦Q. Eventually declarerhad to try the heart finesse, but partner didn’t havea second spade to lead. It didn’t matter, though –partner had enough diamonds to set the contract.

Yes, the opening lead of the ♦K would havedefeated the contract more directly, but what kindof a story would that make?
