Attention EMEs and Lectors:

The July schedule is “live” and

available on the MSP website

and printed copies in the

Servers’ Sacristy. I plan to run

the August schedule the week

of July 27. Please send me all

time-off or special requests by

Sunday, July 26. All ministers

have done a wonderful job

with adapting to our new

routines for Mass.

Thank you to all ministers,

(EMEs, Ushers, and Lectors

when not reading) for wearing

their masks whether Mass is

held indoors or outdoors. Your

acts of kindness and regard for

everyone’s safety are truly

appreciated.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A, JULY 5,

2020

“MY YOKE IS EASY”

Jesus wants us to take up His burden as He takes up ours. “My

yoke is easy and my burden light,” He says. His burden, the cross,

is a way of life. Our own burdens are better shared with the one

who leads us to salvation. The Father has entrusted all to Jesus,

His son, who leads us home. God invites us to His table, the

Eucharist. Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. All rights reserved.

PSR will be happening for the 2020-21 school year! At this time, we are

not sure what it will look like as we await guidance from the Diocese and

government, but we are working closely with everyone involved to

determine the best way forward. Be assured that we will do everything

possible to keep our families safe and at the same time help the young

people of our parish grow in faith. Our plan may involve in person or

distance learning, but will include plenty of support, new methods, and

opportunities to be community in some way. Information will be

communicated as we develop our plan and prepare to begin on

September 13th in some way.

Now is the time to register for 2020-21 PSR! If you have not already done

so, we ask you to register your children as soon as possible. With so much

uncertainty, it will be very helpful to everyone if we have our students

registered early to plan for the possibilities. Children who plan to receive

First Communion are asked to participate in 1st and 2nd grade PSR, and 7th

and 8th grade PSR is expected prior to Confirmation in 9th grade. PSR

registration form is available online at sjvmentor.org. Please call the Faith

Formation Office if you have any questions at 440.255.0600 or email

[email protected].

Invitation letters have been mailed to Confirmation candidates for the

2020-21 preparation class. Candidates are asked to meet with a

designated member of the pastoral staff in July or August for an enrollment

conference as instructed in this letter. These sessions provide a great

opportunity for us to get to know the class, and we look forward to them! If

your 9th grader is eligible and you do not receive a letter, please call the

Faith Formation office at 440.255.0600 or email [email protected].

Our 2019-20 Confirmation class will tentatively be confirmed on Sunday,

October 25, at the 12:15 pm Mass by Bishop Marty Amos. First

Communion celebrations have been tentatively rescheduled to the

weekend of September 26 and 27. We will have one large group

celebration at 10 am on September 26. Families will also be able to

choose any Mass that weekend other than the 7:30 am Mass to celebrate

in a smaller group. The details and any instructions for these sacramental

celebrations will be provided at a later date. If you find that you have a

significant conflict with the dates, please contact the Faith Formation Office

at 440.255.0600 or email [email protected].

First Communion interviews were put on hold during our stay at home time,

and we will resume those at this time for all who still need to do so. If you

are uncomfortable coming to the office, we completely understand and will

work with you. Please call Laura at 440.255.0600 or email

[email protected] if this is the case.

PASTOR’S PAGE

Dear Parishioners,

Pictured above is the flag pole opposite our

Shrine to the Blessed Mother. Some of the Boy

Scouts from the parish planted flowers in that area

as well as on the patio of the rectory. It was a

project that was completed in time for this holiday

weekend when we celebrate Independence Day,

the birthday of our nation. I hope that each of you

are enjoying this holiday weekend by spending

some time with family and friends. In addition,

with the help of family, some of the Scouts

cleaned the picnic tables in the pavilion and

assisted in the project of power washing some of

the statues on the parish property. I appreciate

their help. I also appreciate the help of the many

volunteers who planted the flower beds around the

property and have been faithful in the task of

regularly watering the plants on those days when it

does not rain. The property looks really nice!

On June 30 this week, we ended the 2019-2020

fiscal year. With the COVID-19 pandemic

lockdown beginning in early March and ending a

few weeks ago, the parish experienced a loss of

income with fewer people contributing to the

offertory collection. I appreciate the help of so

many parishioners who have been supporting the

parish with increased contributions, on-line giving,

and extra donations to the parish. Many

parishioners have dropped off at the office a stack

of envelopes to make up for those weekends

when they were not able to attend Mass. Given

this generosity, we will likely end the fiscal year

only about 10% short of budget. That is a real

blessing given the financial difficulties so many are

experiencing due to the coronavirus. We are

entering into the 2020-2021 fiscal year with

confidence that you will continue to be so

generous to the parish and God will continue to

watch over and bless us. With more and more

people returning to the public celebration of Mass

in recent weeks, and if this continues to grow each

week, we should do OK in this coming year, other

than the loss of fundraising revenue. However,

your generous response in selling so many raffle

tickets will also help us to make up for some of the

anticipated loss of not having a Summer Festival

this year. As I type this on Monday morning, June

29th, raffle ticket sales have already exceeded

$60,000, and we still have one more week to go!

Keep up the good work!

One of the changes we are making as we go into

this new fiscal year has to do with the way we

acknowledge your donation each time you make a

donation to the parish or school of $250 or more.

In the past we have sent to you a tax letter to

acknowledge your donation each time you give

one at the level of $250 or more. To save on

postage this year when we wish to watch

expenses more carefully, it was recommended to

me that we do only one letter to donors each year

at tax preparation time in which we would list all

the individual donations of $250 or more a

parishioner makes in that tax year. Call the office

if you have any questions about this or any other

question you may have. Three people who have

been helping me a great deal with the finances of

the parish and school are Debbie Clarke, Stan

Lipinski and Janet Miller. Debbie Clarke is the

parish book keeper and she has done an excellent

job at keeping up with things despite no business

manager since May 1. Janet has been

volunteering in the office for the past few weeks

and Stan began to work here as part-time

business manager this past week. I decided to

make the position of business manager as a part-

time position for the time-being. Jerry Straub left

us on May 1 for his new job as business manager

at Saint Mary Parish in Hudson. I appreciate the

help and assistance of Debbie, Stan and Janet, all

of whom are long-time parishioners of Saint John

Vianney, and the members of the Finance Council

and the Facilities Committee. Having so many

dedicated lay persons in the parish has been a

real blessing.

Pictured below are some of the All Saints alumni

who helped with the Farewell Mass for Sister

Veronica and Terri Armelli last Sunday.

Sister Veronica was known at All Saints for many

things but one of the things she did extremely well

was to prepare the students for an active

participation at school liturgies. The children read

well, sang boldly, and praised God with liturgical

movements which were so very prayerful. Some

of the alumni from classes between 1999 and

2011 came together to do some liturgical

movements at the Farewell Mass. It was amazing

how well they remembered the moves and how

much fun they had preparing in advance and

participating at the Mass. I was so very proud of

them and, if I had children, I’d be sure to send

them to All Saints! We will miss Mrs. Armelli and

Sister Veronica at All Saints but we know that the

lessons they taught our children by word and

example will bear fruit in their lives for years to

come. May God bless them in their retirement

years, and may God also bless Mrs. Maschak with

eternal rest and peace for all the good that she too

did at All Saints. We celebrated her funeral Mass

this weekend at the parish.

Enjoy the weekend and see you next week! FTJ

FOND FAREWELL FOR MRS. BERNADETTE MASCHAK

ALL SAINTS STUDENTS GATHER TO SAY GOODBYE TO A WELL-LOVED TEACHER: Many of

the students from All Saints School and their parents attended the funeral Mass for Ms. Maschak last

Saturday morning in Saint John Vianney Church. After the Mass was done, the students and their

parents gathered on the sidewalk between the church parking lot and Lake Catholic High School

parking lot to form an honor line as the hearse and family headed to the cemetery for burial. The

students placed one hand on their heart and the other hand outstretched in a gesture of prayer and

blessing for their teacher, Bernie. May God grant her eternal rest and peace in his kingdom.
