Rapid City Emergency Services hosted a Spud-Bud-

BBQ Pork Supper on Saturday, June 15t h. Te BBQwas a undraiser or a new fre hall to be located in Rap-

id City, north o the existing Rapid City Library. Tis

idea has been in motion or almost 15 years.

Te current Rapid City Fire Hall, located at the back

o the own O ce, is very small. Firefghters oten have

to put their gear on outside as there is not enough room

to do this inside. While it is still too early to tell what the

new building will look like and the type o acilities it

will contain, the local frefghters are presenting a frm

    commitment to the project.

Te new f re hall wil l be more user riendly and will

also suit the needs o the frefghters. It could still be

a couple years beore anything is carved in stone, but

fref ghters hope to show their dedication as well as

raise awareness or the new project by holding events

    like this.

Making riends inter-nationally has neverbeen so easy with the helpo the Brandon and Area

    Friendship Force.Te Brandon and Area

    Friendship Force was no-

tarized in 2009 and nowhas 37 members. Sixteenare participating in this

in-bound exchange, whileanother 14 are participat-ing rom Hamburg, Ger-

many. Te idea behindthe Friendship Force isthat when you have some-

one visiting rom a difer-ent country or i you are

    visiting a diferent country,

when you put your eet un-der someone elses table, there is an establishment

o riendship. It is amazingbecause it works so well, commented group presi-

    dent, Lynda Ray-Kamann.Members rom Brandon

    were able to entertain their

oreign guests at Minnedo-sas Heritage Village onSaturday, June 29th.

    Te Friendship Force

was established in 1977and is based out o At-

lanta. Tey aim at makinga more peaceul world bydeveloping riends across

borders and increasing re-lationships between indi-

    viduals across the world.

    Tere are over 352 Friend-

ship Forces in six diferentcountries spanning the

globe. Brandon and areagroup has gone on our di-erent exchanges so ar, as

they have an inbound andoutbound exchange each

    year. Exchanges dont usu-

ally run two ways, but atermeeting the German crewin Hamburg, the city o

Brandon was a requesteddestination by their Ger-man riends.

Beginning in Vancou-ver, the German group haddecided to do back to back

exchanges with both Cal-gary and Brandon. Aterdealing with a train derail-

ment in Vancouver and theoods o Calgary, not tomention the heart attack

one o their members had,the group nally madeit to Brandon. We were

quite close to the waterand had to be evacuated atnight, commented Bernd

Graewert, the HamburgExchange Director. Be-tween meeting the Mayor

    o Brandon, Sheri Decter

Hirst, and the Murder andMayhem Walking our, the

weeklong exchange hasbeen very intense. So ar

we have gone to Te Lady

o the Lake or lunch, vis-ited Green Acres HutteriteColony, took a hay ride on

a arm located just outsideo Brandon, and went to

the Peace Gardens, com-mented Ray-Kamann. A-ter we are nished with our

tour o the Heritage Vil-lage, we are going to go toClear Lake. Te group has

a ree day ater that to pur-sue their own interests.

    Tere isnt much lei-

sure time. Im sure the la-dies would have liked to

do a little more shopping, laughed Brian Manns, the

exchange director.Te inbound exchangegroup is staying with ami-

lies rom Brandon and aredivided into the varioushomes. We try to match

everyone as well as we can.We try to do a little bit withoccupation, a little bit with

age, a little bit with inter-est and all those kinds o

things. So it really worksout in the end, said Ray-

Kamann. Te languagebarrier is okay. Sometimesyou dont have a uent

conversation, but that ispart o the experience. Itis surprising what you can

say without having to useyour voice. It is amazinghow much people can un-

derstand while just usingour body language.

Te Friendship Force isa wonderul way to travel,

and an even better way tomake riends, which youmaintain or such a longtime, Ray-Kamann n-

ishes. Next years exchangedestination is Brazil. Untilthen, the group will con-

    tinue to meet every month.
