Foronenight,everythingthathasplaguedthemthisseasonbecametheirstrength.Theyamassed22hitsand21runsinoneofthebiggest,mostone-sidedvictoriesinfranchisehistory.TheytoppledtheBostonRedSoxbya19-runmargin,21-2.Inoneparticularlypreposterousinning,theseventh,theAngelsscored11runsonninehitsandelicitedmassiveboosfromFenwayParkfans.

“Wejusthadittonight,”KoleCalhounsaid.“Itwasnicetocomeoutwithawinanddoitbig.”

BeforeSaturdaynight,theAngels’seasonhighforrunsinagamewas11.Theyhadlostfourconsecutivegamesand10of11andsunkentirelyoutofplayoffcontention,16gamesbelow.500andlastintheAmericanLeagueWest.

Theseasonisnowhalfwaycompleted,theAngelsstillpossessingnopracticalchanceofcontending.But,foranight,theyhadagreattime,atatimewhenpurecleanfunhasbeenhardtofind.

Santiago,whohasstruggledformostof2016,facedBoston’sDavidOrtizwithrunnersatthecornersandoneoutinthefirstinningOrtizhasbeenunfathomablygoodthisseasonatage40,elicitingevenmoresupportfromtheBostonfaithful.Theycheeredwhenheemergedintotheon-deckcircle,andtheybooedSantiagoasOrtizcalledtimeandturnedhisbacktothemound.

TheAngelsarerapidlysinkingintolocalirrelevanceforthesummer.TheRamsopentrainingcampattheendofthemonth,theDodgersarepushingtowardafourthconsecutivepostseasonappearance,andUSCandUCLAwillhitthefootballpracticefieldbeforelong.TheAngels,foundedin1961,areonpacetopostthelowestwinningpercentageoftheirunexceptionalhistory.

However,beforethecasualSouthernCaliforniasportsfansstamp“wait‘tilnextyear”upontheAngelsandturntheirattentionelsewhere,wewantedtochatwithBillyEppler,theteam’sfirst-yeargeneralmanager.Inspeakingwithreporterslastweek,EpplermadetheratherremarkableclaimthattheAngelswouldnotrebuild.

“It’snotintheDNAheretorebuild,”hesaid.

OnWednesday,theHoustonAstrosbeattheAngelsfortheeighthconsecutivetime.OnThursday,theAstros’triple-Ateamscored23runsagainsttheAngels’triple-Ateam.

TheAstrosdidanextremerebuilding,losing100consecutivegamesforthreeconsecutiveyearsbutreturningtotheplayoffslastyearandputtingthemselvesonpacetodosoagainthisyear.

NoonewhoknowsAngelsownerArteMoreno,whohassold3millionticketsineachofthe13yearshehasownedtheteam,believeshewouldsanctionlosingnowtowinlater.Morenohasnotrespondedtonumerousinterviewrequeststhisyear.

ButEpplersaidtheAngelsneednotundertakesuchdrasticmeasures.Hesaidtheydonotneedtochoosebetweenwinningnowandwinninglater.

“Ifyouareinasubstantialmarket,youcandoboth,”Epplersaid.“Ifyouarenotinasubstantialmarket,youcannot.”

Epplerusedtheword“investment”severaltimes.TheAngelswouldgetbetter,hesaid,“withinvestment.”

WhenMarkWalterandtherestoftheDodgers’ownerstookoverateambankruptincourtandinorganizationaltalent,theyinvestedheavilyinwinningnowandwinninglater,takingon$250millionincontractstogetAdrianGonzalezandpayingmillionsinluxurytaxeseachyeartowinnow,spendingmillionsmoreinbonusesandadditionaltaxesforinternationalprospectstowinlater.BaseballAmericarankstheDodgers’minorleaguesystemasthebestinbaseball.

Morenoinvested$250milliontogetAlbertPujols,and$125milliontogetJoshHamilton.Thereturnoninvestmenthasbeenunsatisfactory,andMorenohasbeenreluctanttoauthorizeadditionalspendingthatwouldsubjecttheAngelstotheluxurytax.

TheAngels’spendingoninternationalprospectsisrestrictedfortwoyearsbecausetheyexceededaleague-imposedthresholdtosignoneplayer,infielderRobertoBaldoquin,for$8million.(Returnoninvestment:alsounsatisfactory.)TheSanDiegoPadreswillbesimilarlyrestrictedforthenexttwoyears,buttheyexceededthethresholdSaturdaybysigningeightofBaseballAmerica’stop50internationalprospects,partofaclassthatreportedlycostmorethan$30million.

Sincehearrivedlastfall,Epplersaid,theAngelshavemadesignificantinvestmentsinscouting,playerdevelopmentandanalytics.Hesaidtheyplantospendalloftheirleague-mandatedallocationtosigninternationalprospectseveryyear—thatfigureis$2.2millionthisyear—unlesstheycantradesomeofthatsalaryspaceforminorleaguetalent.

TheAngelsintendtobuildaroundacoreofsixplayers28oryounger—Trout,rightfielderKoleCalhoun,shortstopAndreltonSimmons,andpitchersGarrettRichards,AndrewHeaneyandTylerSkaggs.

Heaneyhadelbowligament-replacementsurgeryFriday;healmostcertainlyisoutuntil2018.Richardsisonthedisabledlistandmightstillneedsimilarsurgery,withthesametimetableasHeaney.SkaggswasscheduledtoreturnfromthatkindofsurgeryinApril,buthehasyettodoso.

Thefree-agentmarketlastwinterofferedquantityandqualityinleftfield,wheretheAngelshadaglaringvacancy.Epplerstruckquicklyandaffordablyatthirdbase(YunelEscobarfor$7million),catcher(GeovanySotofor$3million),shortstop(Simmonsfor$53millionoverfiveyears,viatrade)andbackupinfielder(CliffPenningtonfor$4millionovertwoyears).

Thatappearedtoleavemoneyforoneofthebigbats—YoenisCespedes,DexterFowler,AlexGordon,JasonHeywardorJustinUpton.TheAngelspassedonthemall,andtheirleftfielders,alleightofthem,havecombinedfora.562OPS,thelowestfigureatanyoutfieldpositionforanymajorleagueteam.TheonlylowerOPSatanyposition:theAtlantaBraves’shortstops(hello,ErickAybar)andtheClevelandIndians’catchers.

ThatlefttheappearancethattheAngelscompromisedtheirchancetowinbydecliningtopaytheluxurytax.

“Fromtheviewpointyou’respeakingof,itsoundsliketheonlyplayersthatcanhelpthisclubare$20-millionplayersorbetter,”Epplersaid.“Idon’tbelievethatyouhavetomakethoseinvestmentstohaveagoodteam.

“Ibelieveyoucanfishinthe$2.5-millionpoolifit’sgoingtobeapart-time,60-65%player.Oryoucaninvest$12millioninafull-timeguyandbeveryhappywithyourresults.

“Iftheopportunitycomes,andthereisaplayerthatsetshimselfapartfromthepacklikenoneother,wedohavethefinancialresourcestogogetthatplayer.It’snotanabsolute.Iknowit’spaintedlikeanabsolute.”

TheAngelsprojecttohaveabout$25millionto$30millionavailablethiswinter,andthecomingfree-agentmarketismoreaboutcomplementaryplayersthanstars.Inthemeantime,theywilltrytoinfusetheirminorleaguesystemwithtalent.RelieversJoeSmithandHustonStreetcouldbetradedforprospects,ascouldEscobar,althoughtheAngelswouldbehappytokeephimatoptheirlineupforanotheryear.

Andthattakestime.Inthemeantime,theAngelswillasktheirfanstorenewtheirseasontickets.Beforethosefansdecidewhethertospendthousandsofdollarstodoso,whatwouldEpplertellthemaboutwhentheAngelsmightreclaimtheirstatusasperennialcontenders?

EvenwithoutSmithandSkaggs,theAngelshavesixstartersandaloomingdecision.

JhoulysChacinhasan8.78ERAoverhislastsixstarts,andafterhepitchedonFriday,Sciosciasaidtheywereconsideringtheiroptionsfortherotation.NickTropeano,whohasa3.25ERAin10majorleaguestartsthisseason,iscurrentlyatTriple-A,eligibletoberecalledonMonday.

AsofSaturdayafternoon,Sciosciawasn’treadytosaywhattheywilldo.
