MISSIONARIES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT MISIONEROS DEL ESPIRITU SANTO

Our Founders

All congregations, or religious orders, as well as

movements in the Church, require a founder who

transmits the charism received by the Holy Spirit and the

spirituality that is intended to live in a Congregation.

Thanks to a providential encounter that occurred on

February 4, 1903 between Concepción Cabrera de

Armida and Fr. Félix de Jesús Rougier, a Marist priest,

we were founded on December 25, 1914 in the chapel of

the Roses at the foot of Tepeyac in Mexico City. Who

is Concepción Cabrera de Armida? “Conchita,” as we

her spiritual children lovingly call her, was born in San

Luis Potosi, México on December 8, 1862. At her death-

bed and through a special indult given by Pope Pius X

she died with a religious habit of the same congregation

of contemplative women religious that she had founded.

She was a lay woman, spouse, widow, and mother of

nine children and she is considered a mystical writer to

whom God chose to communicate the Spirituality of the

Cross to the Church. She inspired in the church the

Works of the Cross as well as the Cross of the Apostolate

– symbol of our spirituality for the world. The decree of

the process for beatification was approved recently by

Pope Francis and she will be beatified in Mexico City on

May 4, 2019. Who is Father Félix de Jesus Rougier? He

was sent to Mexico from Colombia during the civil war

where all foreign priests were expelled. He was born in

Meilhaud, France, on December 17, 1859. His Mother

consecrated Felix to Our Lady and offer him to God that

Felix may receive the call to the Priesthood. Fr. Felix

died on January 10, 1938 in Mexico City. He is the

founder of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and

together with Concepción Cabrera de Armida (inspirer of

the foundation and the charisma that we live). We are

thankful for his spirit of obedience and role model as our

founder. His vision of being "above all contemplative

and then men of action" is part of the priestly charism

that we the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit inherited from

him. Fr. Armando, M.Sp.S., Parochial Vicar

Nuestros Fundadores

GOSPEL MEDITATION

Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger? Even the most independent among us likes to make changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles -- the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ. In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power. Mortals may have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but they played little role in the miraculous works themselves. Jesus is entirely different. The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples. First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking about the problem and its solution. Andrew offers a suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus honors Andrew's suggestion, takes the offered loaves, and delegates the Apostles to bring order to the crowd. When the crowd has been fed, the Apostles "gather the fragments left over." In the process, they discover with wonder that bread has been produced in super abundance. In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to make grace real in our lives. He works in and through us as well. Are you facing problems that could have spiritual solutions? Is there a need in your parish or community that you could meet? Whatever our hesitancies, Jesus honors our simple loaves and fishes. He invites us to participate in his generous work of redemption, just as we are.

Go to the Lord very simply. With the

surrender of a small child.

-St. Peter Julian Eymard

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: What is the difference between mortal and venial sin? Answer: Sin is a deliberate thought, word, action, or omission contrary to God's law. Since the beginnings of the Church, sin has been distinguished by its gravity. "Grave matter" is traditionally defined by the Ten Commandments. If a person commits a grave sin with full knowledge of the action's evil and with the complete consent of their will, this is a mortal sin. The effects of mortal sin are grave -- the loss of sanctifying grace, which can be restored by a fresh outpouring of God's mercy in the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Venial sin does not fit one or more of these conditions (for example, a less serious matter still freely chosen or grave matter committed while under force or ignorance of God's law). The effects of venial sin -- while still damaging to the human heart and human society -- are less severe. Even so, smaller sins build habits, which can obstruct our growth in virtue. When we are serious about following Jesus, we should do our best to avoid all sin, whether large or small!
