Series - Part 1: “I am the Bread of Life”

Summer Worship

We welcome back, Rev. Grant Williams this Sunday!

July Worship Schedule:

July 31st - Rev. Grant Williams

August Worship Schedule:

- Rev. Grant Williams

This week Grant is back in the pulpit.

On Sunday we begin a new worship

series called “The Seven I am State-

ments of Jesus”. Each week we will

be exploring a new “I am statement.”

Seven times in John’s Gospel we

find Jesus saying ‘I am’ and then

adding a vivid metaphor.

I am the bread of life

6:35, 41, 48, 51.

I am the light of the world

8:12, 9:5.

I am the door/gate of the sheep

10:7, 9.

I am the good shepherd - 10:11, 14.

I am the resurrection and the life

11:25.

I am the way, the truth and the life

14:6.

I am the true vine - 15:1, 5.

Three of them, ‘The bread of life’,

‘light of the world’ and ‘resurrection

and life’ interpret miracles Jesus has

performed. Two of them, ‘I am the

good shepherd’ and ‘I am the true

vine’ imply that the Jews as the

people of God, Israel, will be

replaced by the followers of Jesus as

the people of God, new Israel. Two

others, ‘I am the door/gate’ and,

‘I am the way the truth and the life’,

make Jesus the only way to enter

into a saving relationship with God.

Jesus as the Bread of life reminds us

that Jesus is the one who provides

the nourishing spiritual food for us in

our journey through life. In the

service we will look more closely at

the importance of spiritual bread and

perhaps sample some “really tasty”

bread too.

Scripture Reading this week:

John 6: 22-59

Sermon:

“I am the Bread of Life”

2016 CHURCH BASEBALL

Games are held weekly on Wednesday nights with the next game on August 3rd at

Norval Norval against Home. Game time is 7pm. Even if you don’t want to play, come out

and cheer our team on! Contact is Jon Curran.

GFORCe — NO NEW STATUS UPDATE Our refugee family still waits in Beirut for news that they can come to Canada. GFORCe waits for them with a house fully furnished, and volunteer gardeners who keep the little yard tidy and tend the grass, flowers and a thriving tomato plant.

Thanks to a tip from a member of Knox Church, two international students have agreed to a one-month rental of the house ending in late August. Jay is in

engineering, and his wife is in the dental field. We have provisional arrangements for our Syrian family, should they be given their visas and plane tickets before the rental ends. Then they can move in and begin their new life in Canada. We wait in hope.

*** “COFFEE TIME” VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE SUMMER ***

Do you have a favourite punch recipe? We are looking for volunteers to

make and serve punch (and optionally cookies) on Sundays in the summer.

There is a sign-up sheet available on the easel outside of the sanctuary or please

contact the church office or Gord and Dorothy Robinson if you can help out! We

just need volunteers for a couple more Sundays - August 14th and 28th.

Thank you!

*** VBS COOKIES DONATIONS *** Hi Everyone,

It is time for the VBS snack team (Ross and Pat) to start the menu

planning. If you are planning on doing some summer baking, we (and

I know I speak for the kids as well), would be very appreciative if you

could make an extra dozen or so of nut free cookies and freeze

them until this Sunday July 31st.

If possible, could you please sign the VBS Cookie Donation sheet or email Ross with the number

of cookies you will be donating.

If you can’t bring them to Church on Sunday, July 31st, just e-mail me or call, and I can come to

your place to pick them up. Any questions, please contact Ross Yahiro.

Thank you as always for your continued support,

Ross and Pat

HIS FIRST WEDDING

A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, "How many

women can a man marry?"

"Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. "How do

you know that?"

"Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the pastor said: 4 better, 4 worse,

4 richer, 4 poorer."

VBS Decorations and T-Shirts

Thank you to the small group of volunteers that helped Tracey with the VBS

decorations last Sunday - Mike, Nancy, Nicholas, Marcus, Max, Lucas,

Willem, Chloe, Jana, Caleigh and Ross. I understand a cave was built very

quickly! (Sorry - no photos were taken on Sunday.)

A special thank you to Joan for again using her press machine to iron on the

VBS transfers to the T-shirts! It is a lot easier than ironing. Thank you also

to the other volunteers helping with the t-shirts: Ashley, Ross, Caleigh,

Carolyn and Nancy.

ST. ANDREW’S SUMMER WORSHIP THEMES 2016

August to September - Grant Williams will be leading worship.

“ I am” Seven week worship series

In the four Gospels Jesus’ unique authority and identity as the Son of God are expressed in

sayings which begin with the words ‘I am’ (Greek, ego eimi), a phenomenon most frequently

seen in John’s Gospel. In the synoptic Gospels we see an example of this when Jesus comes

to the disciples walking on the water and he identifies himself by saying, ego eimi, ‘I am’, which

the NRSV translates ‘It is I.’

John’s Gospel - Seven times in John’s Gospel we find Jesus saying ‘I am’ and then adding a

vivid metaphor.

I am the bread of life 6:35, 41, 48, 51.

I am the light of the world 8:12, 9:5.

I am the door/gate of the sheep 10:7, 9.

I am the good shepherd 10:11, 14.

I am the resurrection and the life 11:25.

I am the way, the truth and the life 14:6.

I am the true vine 15:1, 5.

Three of them, ‘The bread of life’, ‘light of the world’ and ‘resurrection and life’ interpret

miracles Jesus has performed. Two of them, ‘I am the good shepherd’ and ‘I am the true vine’

imply that the Jews as the people of God, Israel, will be replaced by the followers of Jesus as

the people of God, new Israel. Two others, ‘I am the door/gate’ and, ‘I am the way the truth and

the life’, make Jesus the only way to enter into a saving relationship with God.

Grant’s World Grant’s World Grant’s World

I am back from Vacation! This year was very different from other years for the Williams family.

In June this year, we put a backyard pool in our yard and enjoyed the refreshment of it each

day. The hot and sunny days were lovely to spend time at home with friends and family. Other

than staying home we were able to get away for a couple of weekends. The first was to

Ottawa where we had a whirlwind sightseeing tour of many popular attractions. We were even

able to connect with some family members who have recently moved to Ottawa. Then a week

later we took a short trip to Mackinaw Island and City in Michigan. This small little Island at the

bridge between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan is a lovely destination to go to. Also known as

“Fudge Island” because every other store there sells delicious fudge! While the girls shopped

at the many little shops I chose to rent a bike and did an 8 mile round trip tour of the island. It

was a beautiful and relaxing day.

Getting away on vacation is always a nice time to relax, recharge and connect with God. When

we sit and read a book or pray it helps us get our souls connected to God again. I am thankful

for the time way and now I head back to the church to resume serving God with the people of

St. Andrew’s.

Blessings,

Grant
