REACHING IN, REACHING OUT, REACHING GOD

Fr. Jim’s Jottings In last week’s bulletin I asked a rhetorical question: “How old do you think our church pews are?” Well during the week I got an email from Brian Krueger telling me that the pews were 131 years old. He found an article from

1889 that stated that fact. Here is an excerpt of that article. “St Joseph’s Catholic Church was dedicated last Sunday morning by Bishop Katzer. The church has recently been enlarged, the interior entirely rebuilt and new altars, appointments, stained glass windows, and new pews were added. The church has a seating capacity of 900 downstairs and 200 in the gallery and is the largest and one of the finest churches hereabout.” I’m grateful to Brian for confirming that we have some very old pews! They are now being renewed (stripped to the bare wood and re-stained and varnished). We will be happy to see them again by the end of August.

CHURCH RENOVATIONS…CONTINUING Our terrazzo and tile church floors are coming to life. Hopefully by next weekend we will be able to walk on them and get back to our usual Mass schedule. Thank you for accommodating the schedule for these two weeks of no Masses. You have been very helpful in going along with the inconveniences. Reminder that this week we will have no weekday Masses on Mon, Tues, & Fri. But next weekend we will have Mass on Sat (4:00 pm) and Sun (8:00 am & 10:00 am). Then on the weekend of August 8/9 we go back to our normal weekend Masses which are Sat (4:00 pm) and Sun (8:00 am, 10:00 am, & 6:30 pm).

PARISH OFFICES ARE OPEN Monday-Thursday Our parish offices are now OPEN from 9:00-1:00 except for Friday. The doors will be unlocked. We will ask you to wear a facemask and have your temperature taken. Those that have come to our public Masses during the week have been helpful in observing the safety protocols. We presume that those coming into parish offices will do the same.

Please Pray For… Please pray for all our parishioners who are ill: Diane Cahall, Hub Germiat, Donald Gossen, Jerome Hartjes, Kent Hovie, Hailey Keddell, and John Sipple. Please also remember our nursing home residents & shut-ins, and the intentions recorded in our Prayer Book of Intentions. Please pray for our parishioners or family members of our parishioners who have died.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal…We Made It! Thank you to everyone who responded to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal. This week we met our goal of $77,175 with two more contributions totaling $77,274. You did it in spite of the covid-19 and even after our successful “one by One” campaign. Thank you again. May God reward your generosity!

Congratulations—Calendar Raffle Winners July 12—Nancy Holz—$25 July 13—Doris Hunacek—$25 July 14—Curt Esser—$25 July 15—Pamela Scharenbrock—$25 July 16—Adam & Lynn Swoverland—$25 July 17—Fr. Bill Swichtenberg—$25 July 18—Willa Scanlan—$25

Prayer Shawl Ministry We will begin meeting again in a safe way in person at St. Joe’s Holly Hall on August 4, and Rm LL12 on August 18 at 1:00 pm. Contact Mary Stern at 920-851-2275 if you have questions.

Non-Raffle Raffle Thank you to those who have already returned their “Non-Raffle Raffle” donation. It continues to be impressive to see the quick and generous response from so many. So far we have received $21,651.72! If you can, we are asking parishioners to return the raffle envelope with a donation of $35 or more. This raffle is very helpful in getting us through the summer months and especially as our contributions have slipped with the coronavirus. Again, thanks!

Welcome… We welcome into the St. Joseph Community through Baptism… Leroy Joseph Werley

Can the Parish Help? These are very difficult days for some families in trying to make ends meet. Some have lost their job or have had their hours cut back. If St Joe’s can help in some way, please call the Parish Office and let us talk with you.

Live The Liturgy- Inspiration for the Week When a merchant finally finds a priceless, perfect pearl, he sells all he has and buys it. He does this because that pearl matters to him. It has significance and brings a depth of joy like none other. What matters and is of importance to you? When what matters to us has

something to do with the kingdom of God, God is delighted. His exuberant happiness is hard to contain because He knows that we are happy stumbling upon this beautiful wisdom. Ask God to help you discover this pearl of great price. There are many things competing for our attention every day. But not all of these things are important. We focus too much energy on the unimportant, superficial stuff and neglect paying attention to the things that really make a difference and have the greatest impact. Things all too easily become more significant than people, and our agendas become more essential than God’s. We do not have to empty our bank accounts and totally detach from everything we have in order to serve God. But, we are asked to prioritize our lives and make what matters to God what matters most to us. In doing so, when we rise each day, we will be able to see what really needs our attention and embrace it with great joy! ©LPi

Church Chuckle A woman told her friend on the phone: “I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising…. I decided to take an

aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for over an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.
