To Our Guests:Welcome to Cityview. We are glad that you’re here.

Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.

The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.

If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found along the center aisle, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.

For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.

Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger.

Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the opportunities and concerns portion of the service.

If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).

Community Life:Before the ServiceEach week, we take time before the service to fellowship and prepare for worship. Refreshments are served starting at 9:45 AM outside of the sanctuary.

Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together.

Visit cityviewchicago.org/news to see all upcoming events.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to WorshipWe need to be called to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas. Also, we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. If you are a Christian who looks to Christ alone for your salvation, are in good standing with his church, and seek strength to live more faithfully to your Savior, please join in this sacrament.

Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here, but please do not feel obligated to give.

The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

The Lord’s Supper is the world in miniature; it has cosmic significance. Within it we find clues to the meaning of all creation and all history, to the nature of God and the nature of man, to the mystery of the world, which is Christ. . . Though the table stands at the center, its effects stretch out to the four corners of the earth.

- Peter Leithart

The communion meal reorients life by relocating us in the story told by the Word. Instead of being defined by the stories of our culture, we live as participants in God’s story. And the meal points to the goal: eating in the presence of God as a celebration of his generosity in creation and salvation. We anticipate this in every meal, but especially in the Lord’s Supper.

God Calls Us

Call to Worship* — from Psalm 105Give thanks to the Lord, proclaim God’s greatness.

Tell the nations what God has done.Sing praise to the Lord.

Tell the wonderful things God has done.Be glad that we belong to God.

Let all who worship God rejoice. The Lord is our God; God’s commands are for all the world.

God will keep his covenant forever, God’s promises last for a thousand generations.Praise the Lord!

Jesus, Stand Among Us

W. Pennefather

Prayer of Invocation Lord our God, love began with you and has filled our cup to overflowing. In the abundance of your countless gifts, give us your grace to fill others’ lives with love, that we may more nearly be worthy of all you have given us. We ask this in the name of Jesus, the Lord.

Amen.

Hymn of Confession How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

Words & Music: Stuart Townend

Silent Confession

God Cleanses Us

Prayer of Confession — Book of Common WorshipEternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors, and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Assurance of Grace* — John 11:25-26Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. This is the good news.

Thanks be to God!Brothers and sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

We do.

Passing of the Peace — from John 13:34Hear the teaching of Christ: “A new command I give you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” The peace of Christ be with you all.

And also with you!

New Testament Reading — 1 Corinthians 10:14-17

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

God Speaks To Us

Old Testament Reading — Isaiah 25:1-91 O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.2 For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin;the foreigners’ palace is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.3 Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you.4 For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat;for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall,5 like heat in a dry place. You subdue the noise of the foreigners; as heat by the shade of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is put down.

6 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.7 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations.8 He will swallow up death forever;and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.9 It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The

bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

Sermon — A Meal of Salvation: Meals with JesusReverend Dan Adamson

Sermon Text — Luke 22:7-20 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table,

and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Invitation to the Lord’s Table Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise.

God Strengthens Us

Confession of Faith — The Apostles’ CreedChristian, what do you believe?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci-fied, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

13

Words of InstitutionWe break bread in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and proclaim the mystery of the faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us;

Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Communion Hymn God and Man at Table Are Sat Down

Words & Music: Robert Stamps

O, welcome, all ye noble saints of old As now before your very eyes unfold The wonders all so long ago foretold. God and man at table are sat down.

Elders, martyrs, all are falling down; Prophets, patriarchs are gath’ring round. What angels longed to see now man has found: God and man at table are sat down.

Beggars, lame, and harlots also here; repentant publicans are drawing near. Wayward sons come home without a fear. God and man at table are sat down.

Who is this who spreads the vic’try feast? Who is this who makes our warring cease? Jesus, Risen Savior, Prince of Peace. God and man at table are sat down.

Worship in the presence of the Lord With joyful songs and hearts in one accord. And let our Host at table be adored God and man at table are sat down.

When at last this earth shall pass away, When Jesus and his Bride are one to stay, The feast of love is just begun that day. God and man at table are sat down.

Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.

Prayers for Reflection

15*please stand if able

BenedictionMay the light of the glorious gospel of Christ shine in your hearts, transform your lives, and brighten the world. And the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always.

Amen.

SendingLet us go forth to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God!

PostludeEach week people are available to pray with you immediately following the service, located near the communion table.
