My Country: A Hybrid Model Stadium Entertainment’s My Country: Smash Hits is an unconventional benefit album, but that hasn’t stopped company President Camille Barbone from pulling in A-list support. From liner note contributor President George W. Bush and cover artist Garry Trudeau to top country artists and execs, My Country shows an admirable degree of belief in Barbone’s cause, as well as her unique business model. “I consider myself bi-partisan, but I do think it’s the obligation of small businesses to help the government with charity efforts,” Barbone says. “So we devote an income stream for each product we release to a specific charity.” My Country’s cause is Fisher House, which provides free housing to service members and their families who are being treated at a military medical

facility. Songs from Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, Trace Adkins, Darius Rucker, Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Rodney Atkins, Jypsi, Randy Houser, Big & Rich and Montgomery Gentry comprise the Aug. 24 release. And Barbone’s team includes John Betancourt, Wayman Jones and Michael Omansky (CAW 6/21). “We’ve been in the business many years and seen and done it all,” she says. “When we started Stadium we wanted to do something different. We wanted to give back.” The company also seeks to sustain itself, as well as compensate the artists. “We want to profit as a company, but also help people along the way,” she says. “Stadium pays for all

marketing in advance, that’s our donation. We pay artists an advance and half a point. Too often artists are put upon. They’re asked to do a lot and don’t get paid. That’s not right. Then, 8% of every sale from the first CD on goes to Fisher House. We are completely transparent, and have to be.”

The goal is to run a business that’s profitable enough to continue its benevolence. “This costs a lot of money,” Barbone admits. “We’re in a recoupable position for a pretty long time. But that’s okay as long as we’re generating enough profit to do another one.” Stadium’s first project utilized hip-hop artists and benefited the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. “We have to make sure the genre coincides with the primary supporters of a given charity,” she says. “That gives me some marketing synergy and ways to approach a project that doesn’t have the benefit of singles. “Everyone is stepping up. We’ve got a QVC segment booked. Wal-Mart is stocking us handsomely. We’re doing flyaways and going to all the key stations with 25-CD giveaways. We’re trying to compensate for the fact that we don’t have a single, the album’s not on iTunes and there are no digital downloads.” Distributed by EMI, the album doesn’t comply with iTunes rules requiring that 85% of its material is available “unbundled.” Understandably, cooperating labels don’t want to offer single

My tunes: MusiC that shaped My Life

Envision Radio Networks’ The Live Ride host Danny Wright discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1) Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced: As a kid, I was in Chicago walking around Old Town — the hippie section of Chicago at the time — and a record store had the new Hendrix album playing. I recall walking up to the door as if in a trance, listening to the tinny speaker pushing out sounds from another

galaxy. Hendrix was right — I never listened to surf music again.2) Beach Boys/In My Room: Well, not all surf music. Anything from their hit list can instantly transport me to teen years of cruising in my Chevy. This particular song is not only achingly beautiful, but once I was aware of Brian Wilson’s story, it’s hard not to tear up when I hear it.3) Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck in concert: One of the best nights of my life. I met SRV after the show and he was shining. He’d cleaned up his life and looked terrific. Shortly after, he died in the helicopter accident. To this day I’m saddened.4) Tim McGraw, Little Texas, BlackHawk in concert: It was one of the first big country concerts I attended when I started in the format and all three acts flat-out smoked. After McGraw’s encore of “Ramblin’ Man,” I remember just sitting in silent awe, thinking, “This is gonna be fun.”5) Nirvana/Smells Like Teen Spirit: The first time I heard Nirvana, I knew it was over for the spandex and hair bands. Cobain deconstructed the idea of a rock song, forever changing the two verses/chorus/bridge/verse thing. Like the Beatles, it was the start of a societal change - flannel shirts and jeans were suddenly in my closet.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I don’t think I’ve ever listened all the way through to any albums by Dylan, the Grateful Dead or Van Morrison.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything by Madonna or, for that matter, Lady Gaga.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Charlie Sexton’s Under The Wishing Tree. And any album by Sonny Landreth.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Not Home Yet” by Steven Curtis Chapman. This song never leaves my heart.

Danny Wright

Chart Chat Congrats to Carrie Underwood, Skip Bishop, Lesly Tyson and the entire Arista promotion staff on scoring another No. 1 single with Underwood’s “Undo It.” The song is Underwood’s 13th chart-topper, her 12th consecutive at Country and the third in-a-row from her current album Play On.

News & Notes Congratulations to Josh Turner and wife Jennifer, who will welcome their third child early next year. EMI Nashville’s Troy Olsen will embark on the 36-date Get Right Tonight club tour Aug. 5 in Charleston, SC. Complete itinerary here. BMG Rights Management has acquired international music publisher Stage Three Music. rights on many of their top artists. Not surprisingly, Barbone has been astounded at Nashville’s willingness to help. “They adopted our project and really made it their own,” she says. “So many people have helped to assist Fisher House, and they’re also giving my baby company a chance. This is one of the ways we have to function in the new normal. These projects will be an annual event for Stadium, with a Latin-focused release loosely planned for 2011. “We work really hard to vet these charities making sure they’re legitimate and above board,” Barbone says. “Everything is done with a great deal of respect.”

Wayne Update: One Small Step Jimmy Wayne concludes his 1,700-mile journey in Phoenix Sunday (8/1), and it will probably be an emotional event. “I feel like I’m getting ready to graduate college or high school again,” Wayne told us Friday (7/23). “Everybody says, ‘I can’t wait to get out of school.’ But when you’re out you always think there’s something about it [you] really miss. There’s something about being the out on the road that I love. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see me walking around Nashville with ski goggles and walking sticks out of habit.” The trek has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. “Everyone should find this happiness in their business in life.” More here.

Radio News• WKMK/Monmouth attracted more than 20,000 listeners to its first Bay Bash at the Jersey Shore Saturday (7/24). The event included a performance from Matt Kennon. • Envision Radio Networks’ BitXchange has added KHKI/Des Moines, IA as its newest affiliate. • Text messaging service mSnap has forged a deal with Citadel Media to provide mobile marketing for stations outside of Citadel on a barter basis. Here is a summary of many of the first Spring 2010 diary Arbitron ratings, recapping the markets as they came in to Country Aircheck Today last week. With a few exceptions, only stations achieving at least a 1.0 share are included. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and a “t” indicates a tie. A “NA” indicates a subscriber-only market, where rankings are not available, or a station programming another format during that ratings period. Client-exclusive ratings are embargoed from publication.
