July 23, 2018 Take me out to the ball game! This week campers at Lamarque Summer Learning Academy had Clawford from the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs as their mystery reader. Clawford read, Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School to the campers to get them excited for the new school year. After reading the book, campers were able to give high-fives and get a picture with the mascot. As a special treat, all the campers were given a free ticket to attend any 2018 Port Charlotte Stone Crab home game! What a fun way to get everyone excited about reading! Sometimes we are hesitant to ask children to think at this deep level, but they are capable, as the Campers at Gocio’s Summer Learning Academy proved last week. Each Camper was given a partner as they discussed character traits, and were asked to create two charts. The first chart was about themselves, describing their internal character traits. WELL DONE!

81,812 Books read as of 7/13!

Thinking Deeply

Sometimes it can be difficult to see the great qualities within ourselves, while others see them easily. Reflecting on personal internal qualities take deep reflection. On the second chart, each student described the greatest character traits of their partner. Kahoot for Reading Comprehension A great tool that gets kids of all ages excited is Kahoot, an online quiz program. Multiple choice questions can be created and then kids answer the questions with either an iPhone or iPad. It has catchy music, allows kids to make up silly names for themselves and allows for friendly competition as each child strives to answer the most questions correctly. Kahoot was big hit with campers at United Way Suncoast Reading Room, La Mirada this past week. Campers read, If I Could Build A House, and then created Lego designs of houses. This was followed by a presentation by architect Sarah Colandro of Fawley Bryant Architects, who helped design the Reading Room. At the end of the presentation, campers answered the Kahoot about the book, If I Could Build A House. What a fun way to reinforce reading retention and comprehension. "

The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading would like to thank United Way Suncoast Reading Room, La Mirada for using technology to reinforce reading.

!SWAT at the Library

Campers at NewtownEstates Park Club were especially excited to visit the library this week because the SWAT team was there! They were able to look through the SWAT truck and try on uniforms. What a fun, interactive way to learn about the SWAT team! TheSuncoast Campaign for Grade Level-Reading

would like to thank Newtown Estates Park Club for making trips to the library even more engaging!

Incentives

The Sarasota Housing Authority has added their own incentive for reading to the bracelets provided by SCGLR. For their upcoming field trip to Celebration Station, all campers have to read 4 books in order to attend. It helped ramp up reading at camp and almost everyone has now qualified to go on the trip! What incentives can you add to help motivate your students to even greater success?

Socks & Dancing

This week, campers at Wilkinson Summer Learning Academy made and performed with sock puppets, aligning with their animal theme. They found inspiration from two books they read aloud this week, Three Billy Goats and Giraffes Can’t Dance. They also learned the cha-cha, waltz and dance moves from the 60s to go along with their reading.
