THE PREZ SAYS...

TREASURER’S CHEST

Our first in-person General Meeting Thursday, October 1st was a success. Thanks to Vice President Kevin Cannon, KG4PRA for arranging our use of the Pam Carroll Memorial Pavilion. Several ‘firsts’ occurred that night. Not only did some of us brave the new frontier of actually socializing en masse, but this came about as our first-time out of doors and in the dark get together. Luck was on our side in that the weather was perfect. Not realizing what we would find at the Pam Carroll Memorial Pavilion, everyone brought along their folding chairs, wore face masks and maintained a space of six feet apart- just as we were supposed to do.

Our secretary, Stephen Zellers, W4IIR setup his camera and Zoom.us app to make our first live meeting in several months broadcast to club members choosing to remain safely at home.

Andy Gausz, KG4QCD prepared three memorial commemorative Morse Keys which were presented to the families of those club members now Silent Keys: Pamela Sue LaPeter, George Seely, and Mort Cohen.

Our first official Club event in months was prepared by Jim Robarr, KB2CUX who made available materials to construct three element ‘tape measure Yagi’ antennas. Assembled of PVC tubing and cut up tape measures as flexible elements made for hands on experience for several club members. This to bring about our Club event October 17th- a ‘Fox Hunt’. Teams will roam about utilizing radio direction finding technology or ‘RDF’ via the tape measure antennas to

Nominations for the LMARS Board of Directors:

The board member candidate with the highest number of votes will serve a two-year term. All active members are encouraged to make a nomination.

Program (Tape Measure Yagi):

Jim Robarr, KB2CUX, reviews a very usable design for a 2m tape measure Yagi antenna, which are handy for both transmitting and receiving. Sample antenna plans can be found at:

http://theleggios.net/wb2hol/projects/rdf/tape_bm.htm

This particular design is easily folded up to store in a vehicle, and it makes a good directional antenna for activities such as fox hunts. Jim brought pre-sized components with which members were able to assemble their own antennas after the meeting.

Plan is to start the Fox Hunt at the Winter Springs Civics Center at 9:00 AM on October 17. For the hunt, it would be ideal for participants to be in groups of at least two: a driver and a navigator. A compass will also be helpful. The fox will be transmitting on 146.565 MHz and will have a one-minute transmission every 3-5 minutes. The fox will be hiding in plain sight.

Upcoming Meetings:

The next meeting will be held on November 5th at the Pam Caroll Pavilion. At this meeting, we will hold elections for the new LMARS Board of Directors.

UHF Repeater:

UHF Repeater replacement is scheduled in the very near future.

LMARS Meeting officially closes at 8:26 PM

locate a hidden transmitting station, aka a ‘Fox’.

The annual nominations for the 2021 Board of Directors was the main focus of our meeting and this went well with Rich Wilson, WR4RW leading this important piece of business.

If you were nominated to serve upon the Board for next year I hope you will seriously consider this honor. It’s a great way to support LMARS, and not too difficult either.

We will convene again at the Pam Carroll Pavilion November 5th for our elections to the Board for 2021. We are arranging a method of voting online for those not in attendance at the pavilion. A link to the online ballot will be available the evening of elections and will permit only one submission of your vote. Members with their dues paid in full are eligible to vote.

This is our important annual business. Please plan to attend if you can or watch for a link to the online ballot to be made during our meeting.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again November 5th at the Pavilion at 7:30 PM, 701 Northern Way, Winter Springs 32708 in Trotwood Park.

Since the picnic tables were sparse again, bring along your folding chairs and wear your face masks. See you then!

organizations.

Planning for ARISS began in 1996 as a cooperative venture among national amateur radio and amateur satellite societies, with support from their respective space agencies. The ARISS ham radio gear actually arrived on the station before the Expedition 1 crew, headed by Commander Bill Shepherd, ex-KD5GSL. The FCC issued ham radio call sign NA1SS for ISS operations. After Expedition 1 arrived on station, some initial tests with ARISS ham radio ground stations and individual hams confirmed the ham gear was working properly. The first ARISS school contact was made with students at Luther Burbank Elementary School in Illinois on December 21, 2000, with Shepherd at the helm of NA1SS on the ISS.

Before and during scheduled ham radio contacts, students, educators, parents, and communities learn about space and related technologies, and radio communication using amateur radio.

ARISS relies on a large network of amateur radio operator volunteers, many associated with radio clubs in the communities where students and groups participating in the contact reside. ARISS volunteers support satellite ground stations, serve as technical mentors, and provide additional help in the areas of education, community outreach, and public relations.

While student-to-astronaut radio contacts are a primary objective for ARISS, the capability has also inspired further experimentation for amateur radio in space and the evaluation of new technologies. In September, ARISS announced that the initial element of its next-generation ham radio system had been installed in the ISS Columbus module. The new radio system replaces equipment originally certified for spaceflight in mid-2000. The onboard ham station also provides a contingency communications system for the ISS crew. Several astronauts have also enjoyed using NA1SS to make casual contacts with -- and delighting -- earthbound members of the ham radio community.

From The ARRL Letter

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) will soon celebrate 20 years of continuous ham radio operations on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA is commemorating the milestone with a newly produced infographic highlighting the educational contacts via amateur radio between astronaut crew members aboard the ISS and students. Over its 20 years, ARISS has supported nearly 1,400 scheduled ham radio contacts with schools, student groups, and other
