# Club News • Work Party: August 21st is the next work party. We have plenty
of projects to complete this month and could use all the help
we can get. There is always something that needs done. Please
consider helping if you can.
• Board of Directors: With the resignation of Wayne Thompson,
the Board of Directors voted to accept Chris Wheat’s
nomination. Welcome Chris!
• Shooting Hours: Now that summer is here, shooting hours are
extended. A listing of acceptable hours to shoot at the range
can be found at the bottom of Newsletter. Please be respectful
to not commence fire after the posted daily hours.
• Indoor Range Improvements: If you have not noticed, there is a
lot of work going on inside the indoor range! DSMC is currently
installing a new baffle system that will allow shooters to use
copper jacketed bullets inside. This is a huge project and one
that has been talked about for some time now. If you have
time, stop by, and see what is going on
• LOST & FOUND: If you believe you have lost an item of yours in

# Ted’s Thoughts
Sunday Afternoon at the Club / Swap Meet
On Sunday August 15 is the next event. It starts at 2 pm with the program that lasts approximately 20
minutes. We will then go immediately into the Swap Meet. The activity will run until 4 pm or longer if
buyers and sellers are interested in staying open but typically it is done by 4 pm. In the July Swap meet 3
rifles, a shot gun and several other items were sold. If you want to register for a table, contact me in
advance at [email protected]. There is no charge for a table but only members can sponsor
and man a table.
The program will be “AR Care and Feeding” by Bob Popso and Brian Herrig. Bob and Brian are veterans
of the Woman On Target (WOT) program. We have chosen them to run this program as they have
experience doing a similar program for WOT. Bob is a two branch Veteran serving in the Navy and Army
with two tours in Vietnam. Bob has significant experience in heavy weapons maintenance with 11 years
of service. Brian and Bob are good friends with their experience in WOT. We have chosen this program
as there have been a lot of inquiry from members about maintaining this rifle. It typically is not
maintained properly only as a result of inexperience and lack of training. That item has a lot of history.
AR stands for “ArmaLite Rifle” (AR) which was the manufacture original innovator via a design by Eugene
Stoner in the early 50s. The AR acronym has no reference to assault rifle as inferred by the media and
political left. Nor does its derivation come from American Rifle as promoted by the NRA. It is also
commonly referred to as the Black Rifle for the obvious. I like to talk about this history as it has always
irritated me. It is one the most horrible stories in our military history. It ties back to the lousy job
performance of JFK / LBJ did as our presidents during the Vietnam War. Robert S McNamara was
appointed Secretary of Defense by JFK. McNamara was a Berkley California graduate in math. Why he
was appointed Secretary of Defense by JKF and allowed to manage the Vietnam War by LBJ is another
horrible story on to itself. McNamara with LBJs approval by passed the Joint Chiefs in the management
of the war which was the contributing factor to the improper management of it. Please read more of the
political history from this era. One of my favorite books is Dereliction of Duty by HR McMasters.
McMasters was Trump’s National Security Advisor. So properly titled!
Back to the AR, it was introduced into the war and issued under combat operations in 1967 to replace
our beloved M14. I know this to be a fact as I was there in 1967 as I arrived in country in April 67. The
rifle switch for our Marine outfit was made in June. Again, horrible story, the AR failed in use and its
version was subsequently replaced twice before the problems were finally vetted. It is hard to even
comprehend how fast our military staff were able to pull and reissue two new rifles under combat
operations before correcting the problem. The result was that thousands of military personnel were KIA
in combat due to the failure of this rifle. I blame it all on McNamara, JFK and LBJ.
The AR is a complex gas operated rifle and has several nuances besides its black composite stock and
receiver configuration. The chamber has 8 recesses for the bolt lugs for locking and the small bolt needs
to twist within the carrier to provide lock up. These attributes were significant factors in the original rifle
failure as there were no cleaning supplies, cleaning rods etc. issued originally with the rifle nor the
training, education and insight of the rifle’s critical operation on these components. These above rifle
configurations need to be kept clean and the bolt needs special lubrication, or the rifle will fail.
The AR program by Bob and Brian is designed to help you with cleaning and lubricating requirements. On
a more positive note, the AR does have some real positives. It is light, has little if any recoil and is very
accurate out to 300 meters with an experienced operator. It just needs to be maintained properly to be
functional on a regular basis. The rifle is very popular due to the above attributes. The original 223
Remington cartridge is easy to reload and used to be readily available on the market.
Look for a future program on the new cartridge design, 556 NATO, for the black rifle. It also has a tie to a
negative element of our political history with this rifle. The original 223R cartridge is designed for 300
yards. During the beginning of the Middle East wars and conflicts our enemies, some of which were local
uneducated people, of Taliban and tribesmen / terrorist were able to take advantage of the 300-meter
rifle range limitation on our issued ARs. They engaged us in ambushes / combat and similar operations at
distances beyond 300 meters that were beyond the range of the AR / Black Rifle. Military senior staff
were scrambling trying to find the M14’s. The M14 was capable of accuracy and killing power out and
beyond 600 meters. Well McNamara nixed that option as he had all those original combat rifles cut up
and dumped into the Atlantic in 1967. Either way the development of the 556 NATO cartridge and its
heavier bullet and required chamber redesign is another story onto itself. That change was needed to
increase the range of the AR.
It is just this writer’s opinion and experience that the American Rifle designation should and could be the
Springfield 03 and A3, or the M1 Garand along with its sibling M14. I had this discussion recently with a
young Peters Township policeman and veteran Marine. He called the M14 a “bad ass rifle”. I agree with
that statement but might amend it, so it is stated as “One Bad Ass American Rifle”.
Swap Market (SW) – Web Page Entry
Scott Riggins is setting up a new item on the web page for George Taylor. Look for it in August. SW will
be designed to help you with selling and or looking for firearms, components and similar items such as
ammo and reloading equipment. Only club members will be allowed to make web page entries but the
public or others may use the web page to search for a communication link to buy or sell. This will help
augment the bulletin board which is visited frequently by the membership when they are at the club.
Championing Youths at Our Club
Four youths from our club have just recently returned from New Mexico and the NRA Whittington
Center 2-week Camp. Two of them made a presentation at the July meeting. Look for a future additional
programing and more related to the Christmas Party in December – check the calendar. The camp is
supported by the Taylor Grant and other. The Taylor Grant is in recognition of George Taylor our long-
term standing president. The grant is available for any members child or grandchild. Space for three has
been reserved for 2022.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE DAN MILLER
District 42
Allegheny County (Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Castle Shannon)
Democratic Caucus Chair
Committee Assignments
Government Oversight
Rules
As the eldest child of immigrant parents, Dan was the first
member of his family born in America. Raised by a single mom
from an early age, finances were often challenging. Even so, his
family instilled in him a strong appreciation and recognition of the
special opportunities America offers. As a result, Dan has made public service an important part of his
life.
He enlisted in the Army National Guard after high school. While his military service was cut short due to
injury, he found another way to engage in service. As a Team Leader in the AmeriCorps National Civilian
Community Corps, he led a team of young people working on community projects across the Mid-
Atlantic. Dan earned undergraduate degrees in education and history and became a teacher. He later
graduated with a law degree from Catholic University, where he received two community service
awards, chaired its public interest auction, and served as executive editor of its communications journal.
Upon passing the bar, Dan decided to serve the community again as a public defender focusing on
juveniles and later as a county solicitor where he worked to make sure kids were safe in their homes and
received a proper education.
Dan and his wife Kim moved to Mt. Lebanon where he joined the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department as a
volunteer firefighter. In 2011, he was awarded the Medal of Merit for his attempt to save the life of a 3-
year-old child from a devastating house fire. He went on to be elected as a municipal commissioner and
has served the community as a board member of such local institutions as Outreach Teen and Family
Center, the Center for Theater Arts, Carnegie Library, and the Hollywood Theater in Dormont.
Dan was elected to the House of Representatives in 2013. In previous terms he served as a member of
the Education, Labor and Industry, Judiciary and Human Services committees and on the following
caucuses: Steel, Government Reform, Early Childhood Education, Equality, Autism and Intellectual
Disabilities, and Fire/EMS. In 2018, he was elected by his peers to be chair of the Allegheny County
House Democratic Delegation and in 2020 he became Caucus Chair of the Democratic Caucus.
As state representative, Dan has received awards for his advocacy for people with disabilities from
Achieva, The Peal Center, the Rehabilitation and Community Providers Association, the Pittsburgh Local
Task Force, Autism Connection, the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association, and the Arc of
Pennsylvania, and he has been awarded a lifetime membership in the PTA and an advocacy award from
the United Steelworkers.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE
MICHAEL PUSKARIC
DISTRICT 39
Allegheny and Washington Counties
Committee Assignments
Commerce
Education
Insurance
Labor & Industry
Fighting for election reform, property tax reform, job
creation, infrastructure improvements and school safety, Rep. Mike Puskaric is serving his second term in
the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
A life-long resident of western Pennsylvania, Mike was raised on the traditions of hard work and self-
reliance. Prior to his service as a state representative, Mike was the director of settlement operations
for Matrix Property Settlements, a family-run business. Also, he has served as co-chairman of the
Elizabeth Township GOP committee and held a leadership role with the Young Republican national
Federation.
A strong business background and a commonsense approach inform Mike’s actions. He realizes that the
taxpayers in the 39th Legislative District are overburdened – that’s why he will take up the cause of
holding the line on taxes and spending. Mike will continue the House Republicans efforts on job creation,
and to create a climate in which businesses large and small can succeed. At the same time, he will
pursue options to expand trade and technology education for a workforce that will soon be challenged
by the workplace demands of the 21st century.
Mike will protect our state and national constitutions and will advocate for states’ rights, Second
Amendment rights and school choice. He will also strive to reform Harrisburg by ending perks,
restructuring the pension system and ending the influence of special interests.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our election process was changed. However, concerns by many
Pennsylvanians were raised at how our 2020 election process was handled on the state and federal
levels. Mike has introduced legislation to ensure fairness and transparency in the election and voting
processes, regardless of the outcome.
A graduate of Serra Catholic High School and Seton Hill University, where he majored in communications,
Mike cites Presidents Ronald Reagan and Dwight Eisenhower as his political heroes.
The 39 Legislative District includes parts of Bethel Park in addition to Elizabeth, Elizabeth Township,
Forward Township, Jefferson Hills, West Elizabeth, and parts of South Park Township in Allegheny
County. Plus, Finleyville, Nottingham Township, Somerset Township and Union Township in Washington
County.

Father and Son Both Achieve Triple Trophy Status It is a rare accomplishment to harvest a whitetail buck, a black bear, and a turkey gobbler in the same hunting year. It is much rarer for a father and son to BOTH earn triple trophy status in the same year. DMSC members John Provident III and son John Provident IV ( John-John ) accomplished this feat during 2020/2021. Here are some details from their successful hunts: Their whitetail bucks were harvested in archery season on a farm near Claysville. John killed a 7 point on Halloween and John-John killed an 8 point on November 14th. The bear season opener found them overlooking a power line right of way in Warren County. At 9:15 am Dad spotted a bruin crossing the open right of way 180 yards away. A shot from his 338 Win Mag ended a 43-year quest to kill a Pa. bear. Hunting together, son John led the way to the kill location and was shocked when a second bruin left the woods and began crossing the power line opening. He killed it with his 300 Win Mag. This was John-John's second bear in 8 years of hunting. Both bears weighed 130 pounds. They found success in spring gobbler season hunting locally in N. Strabane Township. John needed several days of hunting before bagging his bird on the first Thursday of the season. John-John hunted the same area the following Saturday and was successful, completing his triple trophy quest. The proof is in the pictures. Congratulations to both hunters. There is an older photo of these hunters on the peg board in the old club house. John harvested a Pa bull elk in 2005 and that photo remains on the wall. P.S. If you have a story about shooting accomplishment or hunting success that could be shared with the membership in a future newsletter, please contact Lee Kirchner.

# Combined Clinic Basic Match Scores – June 12th, 2021
What can be more fun than great weather, great camaraderie, a fun action rifle match, and donuts! 20
participants experience it all as DMSC hosted its second ARC Advanced Rifle Match for 2021. We shoot
at paper targets, steel targets, changing through three different shooting positions, using barricades,
multiple reloads, and of course the dreaded but always fun - double swinger with a no-shoot target.
Distances range from 100 yards down to seven yards. Participants fire against the shot timer to provide
a raw time - then time is added for shot placement. Both speed and accuracy factor into the score with
lower being better. Congrats to Joe Martin for taking top honors with a 125.88 - Nice shooting Joe!
America's Rifle Challenge (ARC) has been building interest and participation for six years now. Come out
for yourself and see why this is happening - you may want to give it a try.

A wonderful steamy hot, brilliant, blue skied day that made it great to be at the range. Theodore
Hildabrand stole the match away from local legend Tom Morley by a slim two points. I’m sure that Tom
will congratulate Ted and that Ted will acknowledge the significant difference in machinery. All in all,
there was fine shooting across the line! Thanks to all for the attention to RANGE SAFETY, your good
sportsmanship, and the cooperation you all provide on the range!

Good weather greeted the 8 competitors for this fourth match of the season. The new electronic scoring
target system continues to add the easy element to this 200-yard event. Perry Wancheck claimed top
honors with a 481-13X. Nice shooting, Perry! Right on the tail of Perry was Rich Hildebrand who checked
in with one point less at 480-13X. Also, a good showing, Rich! The next match will be held on Sunday
August 8th – All are Welcome!
One Caveat – we can only accommodate 10 shooters per relay with the electronic targeting system –
assignment will be on a fist come - first served basis.
