Lately, perhaps more than ever, I appreciate the social nature of wine. As my father always says, wine is a beverage for sharing. The package itself is a tipoff. A 750ml. bottle of wine is ideal for sharing with two or more people. A 12 oz beer or 5 oz cocktail – those are singular pursuits. As my wife and I sheltered in place this spring, we found great solace, and conversation, through sharing a bottle of wine. And it certainly made

2016 THREE KEYS CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Nat Komes’ grandfather, Jerry Komes, always said there were three keys to living life to the fullest. What the three keys were, however, he’d never say, no matter how much his eight grandchildren tried to coax it out of him. Was it “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” “Love, Kindness and a Sense of Humor?” Though he never passed on the secret, Nat pays tribute to him with this wine, sourced from his family’s sustainably farmed vineyards in Rutherford. The 2016 vintage yielded a broad-shouldered red with warm flavors of black cherry, plum, wild blueberry and fig with highlights of mocha and cinnamon spice plus a hint of black licorice. There’s a sweet, Bourbon-esque quality to the wine, with notes of high vanillin from its time in French and American oak. This is an unctuous, fruit-packed Rutherford Cab that calls for a robust food pairing such as a hearty beef bourguignon, duck confit, or pasta with Portobello mushrooms.

2019 SOLILOQUY

Flora Springs Soliloquy is named for our proprietary Sauvignon Blanc clone, an outstanding and singular clone which is entirely unique to Flora Springs. Planted in our Crossroads Vineyard in the Oakville AVA, the clone was certified in the late 1980s by UC Davis as distinct from more common Sauvignon Blanc clones in Napa Valley. The clone nearly went extinct when our vines became diseased and had to be pulled. It took eight long years – three in a lab, two in a nursery and three in the ground – but our family was able to protect and preserve this precious clone. After that, General Manager Nat Komes took Soliloquy on as a personal project, conducting numerous blending trials over a three-year period to re-create the Soliloquy wine he and his family remember so fondly. Today, Soliloquy represents our quest to create the finest white wine we have ever made. Our 2019 Soliloquy is a complex, multi-layered blend of white varietals offering exotic flavors of passion fruit, lychee nut, lime, and graham cracker along with a floral bouquet of jasmine and orange flower. With bright acidity and a creamy mouthfeel, this white wine blend pairs well with a range of foods including Thai chicken coconut curry, lobster rolls and hard cheeses such as Gouda, Havarti and Monterey Jack.
