What's New in the Town of Brookfield?

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 27th at the former Hearth Restaurant to celebrate the start of

the Phase 2 portion of the Brookfield Streetscape project. The second phase is an extension of Phase 1 and includes the following:

• A sidewalk on both sides of Federal Road, running south from the end of Phase 1 construction to the intersection of Old Route 7.

• A mid-block crosswalk connecting the Still River Greenway Trail to the sidewalk and bike path • Parallel parking on the street, shrubs and trees along the new sidewalk.

The connection to the Still River Greenway trail will provide foot and bike access from the trail to Brookfield Village for dining and shopping. Coinciding with phase 2, design has begun on a separate project funded totally by a state grant. A 2,500-foot extension of the greenway will connect the path to the parking lot near the firehouse by Town Hall.

A Request from the Still River Greenway Ad-Hoc Committee We are an Ad Hoc Brookfield volunteer committee determining the feasibility of extending the Still River Greenway (SRG) north to the New Milford Town Line. By completing this survey, we will understand better who

and how the SRG is currently being used by the community. Please take this 3 minute survey here. The Greenway Extension is currently in the design review stages. For more information on the Still River Greenway please contact Parks and Recreation at (203) 775- 7310

The official unveiling of the first Little Free Library in the Town Center District of Brookfield was held on June 23 in front of The Brookfield Funeral Home. The result of a partnership with The Brookfield Library and The Friends of the Brookfield Library, this

Little Free Library is a take-a-book, leave-a-book phenomenon sweeping the nation! Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. There are now more than 80,000 Little Free Libraries in all 50 states and 90+ countries, from

Argentina to Zambia. “We are so very excited to present the Little Free Library to our friends and neighbors. It is our way of adding to the positive changes in the Town Center District at the Four Corners in Brookfield. Stop by frequently to browse the selection of books,

they will be changing often as people take a book and leave a book! Also, visit www.LittleFreeLibrary.org for a map of other

libraries in our area!” Tania Porta, owner of The Brookfield Funeral Home. This local unveiling coincides with the 10th Anniversary of the Little Free Library as well as the kick-off of the 2019 Summer

Reading Program at The Brookfield Library. Director, Yvonne Cech added “We love the concept of The Little Free Library. When researching this, we discovered that one challenge that Little Free Libraries face is maintaining a high quality of books. That’s where we come in! When Tania (from The Brookfield Funeral Home) first approached us about partnering on this, we knew we would be able to assist by providing good quality books since we receive so many donations. Tania took care of the rest. Together with The Friends of the Brookfield Library, we will be able to provide a great service to the community. The take-a-book, leave-a-book model encourages people from the community to leave a book when they are able to, but, if things get sparse, we can guarantee a high quality

collection.” Renowned author, Nan Rossiter, who attended the opening, supports the idea of Little Free Libraries in communities. She is offering her services to do a reading for the unveiling and will be on hand to sign

books. "Having a Little Free Library in your neighborhood is like having a Portkey to the world!" said Nan Rossiter.

On July 23rd celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon

landing at The Brookfield Library with exciting magic, fun comedy and

lively songs about our amazing satellite. Kids will learn about Neil

Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, the astronauts who made

this incredible journey, as well as Katherine Johnson, the NASA

mathematician who made their journey possible! They will learn about a

lunar eclipse; discover why most earthlings see a rabbit, not a face, in

the moon; have fun exploring the phases of the moon and much more!

This will be a delightful program for children of all ages to experience the moon myths, moon facts and moon

science.
