Edelweiss Preparatory SchoolHIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR YEARThe Edelweiss students have had a wonderful year full of educational experiences! They have had weekly sci-ence experiments with Captain Science and weekly mu-sic and Spanish lessons with amazing teachers.

The children learn specialized curriculum in Jolly Pho-nics, Learning without Tears, Brain Gym and yoga.

Various classes went on field trips to the Corn Maze, Fort Calgary, Alberta Ballet, The Fish Hatchery, The Glenbow Museum, Safety City and the National Music Centre. Of course, the yellow school bus ride is always a big high-light no matter where we take them!

They have benefitted from in class presentations from the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, the Humane Society, Clay for Kids and Christopher Cool the Magician’s shows on Halloween Safety, Dinosaurs and Recycling. The Kinder-garten students have learned about different cultures

complimented by special presenters from 10 countries in the world.

At Christmas, the children took part in an Artist in Resi-dence program and after the workshops performed the Nutcracker in a Nutshell to the delight of their parents.

The kindergarten children have an enriched art pro-gram including studying the works of famous artists and exposure to various techniques and mediums such as Papier Mache, Chinese brush painting, soapstone carving and pottery to just name few.

This year Edelweiss won an award in the Best Preschool category from Calgary’s Child for the ninth time!

To end off the year the children enjoyed a Butterfield Acres Petting Farm that came to Edelweiss for a fun western themed day!

We have preschool classes for 3-year-olds, Jr. Kindergar-ten classes for 4-year-olds and Kindergarten for 5-year-olds. You can find us on Instagram, Facebook and on the school website www.epschool.ca.

CAMBRIAN HEIGHTS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGECAMBRIAN HEIGHTS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

July and August are quiet months for the Community Association as summer activities and vacations are enjoyed by all the directors and volunteers. There will however be activity at the Community Hall as some renovations and maintenance projects are undertaken. A major upgrading of lighting and flooring is scheduled along with some bathroom facilities improvements. These must be scheduled over the summer months while the Edelweiss Preparatory School is in recess.

On May 29-30 our major fundraising event was held at Casino Calgary. We wish to thank all volunteers who contributed their time to the critical fundraiser for Cambrian Heights. A special thanks goes out to Sonya Hnatiw for her efforts in coordinating volunteers and the organizational planning. Without this fundraiser your Community Association activities and facilities would not be able to continue operations as currently organized.

At the writing of this report we were preparing for our Annual General Meeting June 11 and our fifth annual Spring Cleanup June 16 in association with Rosemont Community. We hope you were able to take advantage of these events and the Community wishes to again thank Gary Wilson for his organization of the Cleanup event.

Once again, we will be starting our Fall social programs with another September Asado BBQ. This was a great success last year with Chilean style outdoor barbecued lamb, pig and vegetables plus open mike music, wine, cider and beer. This was a great family affair that lasted well into the evening as the musicians were outstand-ing. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please contact Jodie Dixon ([email protected]) and enjoy the full impact of this neighbour-hood event.

This fall, we will once again host our annual Halloween Dance and Lego contest for the children. After the suc-cess enjoyed this spring, we will have another Cooking Class hosted by Chef Don Turnbull. Stay tuned as more information on these events are posted on our website (www.cambrianheightscommunity.com).

Our weekly yoga program will be suspended for the July/August months as will the four weekly fitness drop-

in programs (Piloxing, Kickboxing, and Body Lift) offered at the Hall in the early evenings. These programs will be starting up in September with information posted in our website and the August Newsletter issue. However, over the summer months we will be offering Monday/Wednesday “Body Lift Method” classes outdoors. For more information check our website or the poster in this month’s newsletter.

In our last report we highlighted the Jane’s Walk and our focus on community parks. In this context we wish to name these various green spaces and improve their us-age through consultation with residents. The attached photos show two members of the “Thursday Afternoon Classy Painters” enjoying Confederation Park in early May as a source of artistic inspiration. A great use of our Parks.

One of our first focus areas will be the park on 10th Street and 32nd Avenue adjoining Queen’s Park Cem-etery. This is currently an Off-Leash Dog Park and the fo-cus of much controversy in 2018. We will be looking for residents who want to take part in determining how to improve this park through design and facility additions to reflect its importance and ownership to our commu-nity. If you wish to be involved or comment on this pro-cess, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

The next meeting of the Board will take place September 9. All residents are welcome to attend. These meetings normally take place at the Georgina Thomson City build-ing on 14th Street and Northmount Drive at 6:30pm.

A Rare Breed…The Indian Hare Dog is a now-extinct breed of domesticated dog developed by the Sahtú people of the Northwest Territories. It was not known to bark and would show affec-tion by rubbing itself against people like a cat would. It was thought to be a do-mesticated descen-dent of coyotes.

Rosemont May Birdwatching Eventby Jean Blackstock

On Saturday May 25, at 9:00 am, about 10 intrepid bird-watchers set out with a City of Calgary rep and our Bird-watching Leader into the Wilds of Confederation Park. Little did we know what awaited us. A light rain gave the park a deep green hue and the place was alive with bird-song. We headed west from the Rosemont Community Parking Lot and proceeded to the new Viewing Platform. It is a very impressive structure. We saw a Coopers Hawk in one of the deciduous trees, a Spotted Sandpiper, Red Winged Blackbirds and two kinds of Ducks. Of course, we saw Mother and Father Canada Goose and their giant, fuzzy yellow babies. Unfortunately, there was a lone egg on the island that had failed to hatch for some reason. As we went closer to 14th street, our leader remarked that we were very lucky to see the elusive Oven Bird. This is just a sampling of what can be seen right in our backyard. I hope everyone takes the opportunity to go birdwatch-ing. Our leader also told us that 80% of songbird mortal-ity is due to cats. The other 20% includes habitat loss.

ROSEMONT COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEERosemont Community has an Environment Commit-tee and Welcomes anyone who is interested in envi-ronmental concerns or projects for Rosemont.

We have had several meetings in the past year and have been working on several projects such as promoting solar panels for the Community Hall, gas station site at 14th Street. and how to promote walking and bike rid-ing in Rosemont—to name a few things that have been discussed. We welcome new members and new ideas of what projects you think will make Rosemont a more environmentally-friendly neighbourhood. Anyone in-terested can call Jean Blackstock at 403-305-9447.

ROSEMONT PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

SUPPORT FOR SAFER STREETS – Rosemont Traffic Calming PilotWillem Zantvoort has been working with City officials to develop a Rosemont Traffic Calming Pilot. During the past months, Will has continued to meet with a City Plan-ning Engineer to discuss the implementation of a Traffic Calming Pilot in our community.

To implement a calming pilot in our community, a City Traffic Designer needs to take the Community’s ideas and make them roadworthy. We already have a good documentation of many of your comments on where speeding and dangerous driving are occurring, however the more comments we have the better we can plan and sooner the city will help with the implementation.

We need the Rosemont Community to continue to show support for this important safety initiative. The safety effect of traffic calming, and vehicle speed reduction is proven and sets a higher standard for safety and quality of life within the city. There are many new families mov-ing into our beautiful community with lots of kids run-ning around and walking to school. Please show your support for these community traffic initiatives and help keep the Rosemont roads as safe as possible for all users.

With that, I would ask that you please take a minute to send an email or letter of support to Councillor Chu at [email protected] or Office of the Councillors, PO BOX 2100. Stn. M. Mail code: 8001, Calgary, AB, T2P2M5.

Another great way to voice your traffic concerns is via 311 to the city. This can be done by a phone call (311), or with the online 311 service (select service type: Community Traffic – Cycling-Pedestrian Inquiries).

Your comments are valuable, and they will help drive the process! Please take a couple of minutes to voice your comments to the City at 311, Councillor Chu([email protected]) and info@ rosemontcommunity.com.

There is another very interesting project percolating in the Community. In the early Spring, the communities of Rosemont and Cambrian were approached by the Bentall Kennedy group who are responsible for the operation of North Hill Mall to come up with a joint project between the two communities. The executive groups of both com-munities considered many options. We have settled on the development of the off-leash dog park located on 10th Street and 32nd Avenue just south of Queen’s Park Cemetery. We are coordinating this through Cambrian’s very innovative open spaces strategy as part of its “Cre-

ating Our Future Together” initiative. To this end, we are starting to build a volunteer base of folks interested in helping out in this development project.

A first step will be to form a committee of volunteers who are interested is seeing our Dog Park developed in a man-ner that balances usefulness while respecting its location in a residential community. We also must work with Cal-gary Parks to determine what restrictions/limitations may be placed on our ability to add facilities, landscaping, sig-nage and how this will impact maintenance in the future.

This project is in the very initial stages, but if you are in-terested in being part of this very exciting project, please contact the Rosemont Community at [email protected]

Paving Projects near RosemontThere will be some road paving in and around the Rose-mont area during the summer of 2019. The most notable project will be Cambrian Drive between Northmount and Rosehill Drive. Milling will start July 23 and paving will start Aug 6.

See a Pothole? Report ItRosemont has lots of potholes and uneven road surfaces. If you see a pothole, report it to the City by calling 311 or by using their mobile app. The city relies on citizens for all potholes in residential areas.

They won’t get fixed if we don’t report them!

ROSEMONT September Start-Up September 21.The Rosemont START-UP returns Saturday, September 21. It was quite successful last year…I know, there’ll be sports try-outs and schools has just begun….But we feel that this will be a nice way to start the year off with a community get-to-gether, and we will be trying to attract some more Rosemon-tians to get involved with the Community Association. We’re going to ramp things up with some new events and fam-ily activities. Things will start off around 3:30 with outdoor games and entertainment for all the kids. The barbecue will start around 5:30pm followed by some music and dancing

We’re going to get some music going outside once again, drag out the fire pit and carry on until we run out of wood. It’s a great way to start the season. And hopefully, our good Rosemont luck will return to keep the rain away this year.

5:30 pm - Barbeque starts

Come out and enjoy the games, entertainment, the Ponies some great tunes and some neighbourly hospitality...
