Southwestern Illinois Charitable Giving Guide

By ALAN J. ORTBALSThe Illinois Business Journal is proud

to present the fifth annual Southwestern Illinois Giving Guide. Southwestern Illinois is served by a plethora of charities ranging from tiny, local agencies to those that are national or even

international in scope. We’ve included more than 30 in our Guide this year and we’re

sorry we didn’t have room for more.Americans are a generous people. The

National Philanthropic Trust offers some interesting statistics on charitable giving in the United States. For example, did you know:• Corporate giving in 2016 increased to

$18.55 billion - a 3.5 percent increase from 2015.

• Americans donated $390 billion in 2016 — 4.2 percent increase from 2016

• 91 percent of high net worth households give to charity.

• In 2016, the majority of charitable dollars went to religion (32 percent), education (16 percent), human services (12 percent), grant-making foundations (11

percent) and health (9 percent).• Charitable giving accounted for 2.1

percent of gross domestic product in 2016.

• In 2016, the largest source of charitable giving came from individuals at $281.86 billion, or 72 percent of total giving; followed by foundations ($58.28 billion/15 percent), bequests ($30.36 billion/8 percent), and corporations ($18.55 billion/5 percent).

• On average, high net worth donors gave $25,509 to charity in 2015. By comparison, general population households gave $2,520 on average.

It occurred to us a few years ago that business owners are frequently asked to

give and that there was no easy way for them to access information about all the different charities and what they do. So, we began the Giving Guide to help link donors and donees.

In the following pages you’ll be able to read the words of board chairs, CEOs and executive directors from six local charities. They range from those that support the development of our young people to those that serve clients with special needs to those that support people in crisis situations.

The Southwestern Illinois Charitable Giving Guide can be pulled out of this issue of the Illinois Business Journal to refer to throughout the year. It will also be available on our website, www.ibjonline.com.

Senior Services Plus, Pathway to Wellness Campaign is scheduled for completion by January of 2019 and will be open to the public. Senior Services Plus has engaged EWR/Farnsworth as the architectural firm, Sheppard, Morgan and Schwab Inc. as the civil engineering firm, and Impact Strategies as the general contractor for the project to support us in creating a free standing pre-engineered 9,928 square foot facility to expand our community Wellness Center.

Senior Services Plus (SSP) believes that a major component of healthy aging is access to affordable wellness and in 2007 developed a low cost alternative for individuals as they age to engage in preventative wellness activities. This strategic

initiative which started in 2007 with 24 pieces of equipment and 253 members has grown to a community wellness center with over 1,400 members, 54 pieces of equipment and 18 fitness classes. We currently operate our wellness center out of four rooms at our headquarters for a total of 4,008 sq. ft. for 1,400 members. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $2,200,000.00; we currently have $1,565,492.00 committed in cash and $292,438.00 in pledges for a total of $1,857,930.00. On October 24th, 2017 John and Jayne Simmons stepped up with an incredibly generous challenge gift of $400,000 for the Pathway to Wellness Campaign. All

gifts will be matched dollar for dollar, including all pledges, gifts, grants and bequests. Since October 24th, we have raised $135,987.00 for the match. SSP is the only not for profit wellness center in Madison County providing this scope of wellness services to the community.

On average SSP serves 3,000 people a day through an enormous variety of programming that is designed to keep the seniors safe, healthy and living independently and with dignity in their own homes. In 2017, SSP has provided direct services for 26,314 seniors, including 335,477 hours of homemaker services for 959 seniors to remain living independently in their own homes. SSP delivers a total of 85,214 Meals on Wheels, for 966 seniors, and provides 24,920 free lunch meals for 1,277 seniors which is a third of their daily nutrition. The Foster Grandparent Program provides over 115 senior volunteers who volunteer 96,174 hours of volunteer service as tutors, mentors, or caregivers to improve the lives of 4,697 children. Information and Assistance Specialists advocate for 4,676 seniors and people with disabilities with limited incomes by providing information and referral services to effectively access resources and benefits provided by Federal, State, and private and community organizations, plus avoid exploitation and scams. In 2017, 522 seniors have been driven 91,670 miles and 1,400 community members accessed our low cost wellness center to improve their health and fitness. SSP has experienced ongoing growth in our services for the past 10 years. With over 10,000 seniors turning 65 every day until 2030 across the country we have seen a local increase for our services.

The mission of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation is to instill youth in the Greater East St. Louis area with the dream, drive and determination necessary to succeed in academics, athletics and leadership.

Empowering Youth to Win in Life

Our focus is simple... One child at a time. We help to restore family relationships; prepare young adults to make positive life decisions and become productive citizens. We are building stronger communities through programs that strengthen & preserve

families. In addition to over 20 different areas of care, Hoyleton, is expanding our behavioral health services. We are growing programs that work with children who struggle with emotional, educational, intellectual and developmental challenges or may have experienced trauma. We treat the whole child, looking at more than a single issue so we can provide the best, most comprehensive integrated care. We examine barriers in the home, school and community, working with the family who raises them and the organizations that support them.

Grounded by faith and the traditions of the United Church of Christ, we make a positive impact on over 2,800 lives each year. Together with your support, we are bringing hope to children facing neglect and abuse, and ensuring they feel seen, heard and loved. For more information visit www.Hoyleton.org or give us a call at (618) 688-4727. Chris L. Cox President and CEO HoyletonYouthandFamilyServices

“Girl Scouts is 2.6 million strong nationally. Locally, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is 15, 874 strong – 11,316 girls and 4,550 adults who are positively changing their communities in 40 ½ counties in Southern Illinois. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place! Everything a Girl Scout does centers around STEM, the outdoors, development of life skills, and entrepreneurship, and is designed to meet her where she is now and to grow along with her. Girl Scouting unleashes the power of every G.I.R.L: Go-getter Innovator Risk-taker Leader preparing her for a life-time of leadership—from taking a night time hike under the stars to accepting a mission on the International Space Station; from lobbying the city council with her troop to holding a seat in Congress; from running her own cookie business today to tackling cybersecurity tomorrow. Our Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a one-of-a-kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. It is based on time tested methods and research backed programming that helps girls take the lead—in their own lives

and in the world. Consider serving our 107 year old mission and volunteer to become a member or donor today.”
