PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Hello Members,

Half way through the year already!

I’d like to thank those of you that came out and voted back in June. The success of our club depends on members support. I’d like to congratulate all of the new and returning Board Members. This will be an exciting year at the club.

The Warriors couldn’t get run of the green against the Cronulla Sharks recently, hope they can bounce back in the upcoming weeks. On Friday the 6th we’ll be showing the Crusaders v Highlanders on the big screen, so come along and make a night of it.

Family day will be on Sunday August 12th at 1:30 in the Sports Hall. Look out for the poster and save the date. It’s a great day for the kids, so come along and enjoy the fun.

The Club Café is hosting the annual Oyster Lunch on Wednesday July 18th. Tickets are available at the club office now, get in quick as this day always sells out.

Bingo is now underway, and as always a huge crowd braving the cold mornings. This only goes for 8 more weeks, starting at 10am on Tuesday’s. All members welcome.

Some good entertainment coming up over the next few months, keep your eye on the Entertainment calendar for details. Until next month- see you around the club.

Regards, Kevin Cole

ALLSPORTS Hello Everyone. Our Report is short and sweet this month. We have our monthly meeting on Monday the 2nd of July, and the Dumbo Hampton All Sports night on the 13th of July. We look forward to seeing you there for a great night.

CARDS Hi members. Who would think, we are into the 2nd half of our year already! July is here now and we have again had a busy month of activities for our card section members. As far as our "Combined Crib and Euchre Tournament' results are going, we have completed the first round of 6 games with 6 wins, currently in front, however we had a bad loss just in the 1st game of 2nd round. So hope we can go well from now on for the remaining 5 games.

On Sat June 16th our interclub bye day, we had a "Fun Day" for our section members. We had 53 people enjoy a social afternoon, starting with a great lunch of platters from the restaurant. We then had 10 games of Bingo/Housie with prizes of Club Vouchers and Chocolate for the lucky ones. Then we finished off with a few games of Euchre.

We have just completed our 1st set of Aggregate games, best accumulated scores of 5 from 6 nights. The overall win was shared between Barry Grose & Brent Berg on 77 points. Next was Joyce Davison on 75 points followed by close scores by others. Congratulations to everyone with the consistently good scores. This Sunday 1st July, we are hosting a 6 handed Euchre Tournament, open to all other Clubs as well. Hopefully we will get a good turnout of at least 20 tables. Also we will be having a pairs night on the last Thursday in June, but not in July, due to the next round of Aggregate games being played. Pairs nights are always fun, with members playing with their chosen partner for the night.

We are waiting for members to play our "Winter Tournament Games", with groups of pairs playing in 4 different sections for a start. Most of these will be played in the main bar at various times. Finishing off, we welcome any new members to come and join our fun Euchre nights every Thursday night $3.00 to play, report at 7.15pm, progressive play 12 games. Finish at approx. 9.50pm. Regards, Lorraine Cole

Thanks to our helpers on the day, the committee members & their partners. We completed our aggregate with Val winning on 75 points, 2nd was Margaret with 73 points & 3rd James on 73 points. Our thoughts go out to Pete & wish him a speedy recovery. We would like to welcome back our Travelling Wilburys Paul (Polyester) Bulman & Lesley Bulman. Champions of Tournament

And add in the Youth champs and North - South game and prize giving it makes for a great 5 days. Yours at tops – John Poole

FISHING We had a great Mid-Winter Function in the Chalmers Restaurant on 23 June. The cold weather kept a few away but those that attended had a very enjoyable night, food and service could not be faulted. Sea Charter to Moeraki is in September, still some spaces left, see Ron Woods or contact Jason Smith. First weekend of October we have our Twizel competition a very popular trip with usually twenty or so going to try their luck ending with a unique BBQ at

INDOOR BOWLS In May and June our members played in a number of competitions. Mike King was runner up in the Canterbury Singles Championship. At the Open Nationals held in Ashburton, Jenny Hamilton, was in a team that was Runner up in the Open Masters Fours Championship. In the main Open NZ Championships, David Woods

and David Philpott reached the last 16 in the singles. At the Men’s Clubs NZ Nationals held in Invercargill David Bullock and Bevan Matthews reached the semi-finals of the Pairs, and Mike King, David Philpott, David Bullock and Greg Hill reached the semi-finals of the Fours. The Hornby club finished second in the overall

After 7 rounds of the Super Sevens, Hornby A is first equal and Hornby B is fourth.

We had two players; David Philpott and Bev Diamond go to England to play in the World Festival of English Carpet

Bowls in May. In the Pairs they reached the last 32 losing on an extra end. A great experience playing the English version. Coming up, we have a team going to the Women’s Nationals at the St Johns Club in Wanganui in July. Regards, David Philpott - Captain

MIDWEEK BOWLS The number of people attending our Tuesday afternoon bowls continue to be very pleasing despite the gloomy and cold weather we have been experiencing. Actually, it is good to get out and enjoy playing a few games of bowls on our friendly and fun Tuesday afternoons.

We have another lunch out and sight-seeing trip planned for 3rd of July and members are looking forward to that outing.

New members are always welcome on Tuesdays, upstairs in the sports hall.

Regards, Tony McBride

Winners of our Open Pairs Malcolm Pollock & Aven Placid

OUTDOOR BOWLS Finally the weather was kind to us and last month’s section game was played in fine but cool conditions at the Racecourse Bowling Club. As this was the last game, on our calendar for the 2017/18 season, our numbers were down but good facilities and a great green made for a good day out. Bowling in good conditions the Pam Howorth’s skipped team with Neville Houston, Fay Pedersen and Susan Low were overall winners by points difference from the Barry Taylor skipped team with Les Wilson, Lois Clark and Rosemary Pilcher. Sorry no photos I think they are in cyber space if or when they reappear I will place them on our notice board. Only one notice that is our A.G.M. on Sunday the 8th July @ 10.30am in the Westview Lounge of the Main Club, keep this date free, look forward to seeing all our member’s attending. Regards, Robin Leary

POOL We are 3 matches into the second round of our Inter club season and a few teams have a chance of making the playoffs. Division 1 sees the Yellow team sitting 4 and performing well in a very competitive grade. Division 2, the Miscues are going well and are in finals contention. Division 3, The Diamonds are mid table and have a chance of making the play-offs. There are still 8 rounds to go so good luck to all our teams. We held the Jack Elcock Cup Open Pairs on the 17th. This was taken out by

Malcolm Pollock & Aven Placid over Leo Tafu & Adam Chapman and it was another fun day.

Timaru Town & Country hosted the CNZ South Island 8 Ball Champs and Hornby was again well represented. Ladies Pairs, Sherralee Boyce & Debbie Purdon and Maxine Soal & Letitia Jackson both pairings made the quarter finals. Ladies Singles, Letitia Jackson, Sherralee Boyce & Pauline Laugesen all made last 8. The Main Flight, Maxine Soal made the last 8. In the Trophy Flight Debbie Purdon

made a Semi-final. The Hornby Ladies won the Teams Event. Open Pairs, Barry Henderson & Graham Carr made the quarter final. The Trophy Event was taken out by Alan Robertson & Lee Taylor and the Trophy Flight was won by John Renwick & Sherralee Boyce. Open Singles, Dan Bowen made the last 8 of the main event. Main Flight, Barry Henderson, Leo Tafu, Chris Ford & Mike Jeffery all made the last 16. Trophy Event, Sherralee Boyce & Blair Lasenby both made the last 16. Trophy Flight, this was won by Alan Robertson over Ricky Bell. Overall our Hornby players performed well in what was an extremely strong field. Geraldine held the Four Peaks Classic at the Heritage Hotel and Hornby were represented by 18 players out of a field of 43. An outstanding number once again. In the main event Leo Tafu was the best of the Hornby players only going down in the Final. In the Main Flight, Malcolm Pollock played sensational to win the Final. In the Trophy Event, Dean Skelton & Richard East both made the last 8. It was another great weekend away with the Hornby team, a lot of fun and it was enjoyed all. Regards, Allan Cowan SNOOKER The Open Billiards has nearly been completed. Results will be posted at a later date. The section has 5 teams competing in the South Island pairs early in August. Just one month later 3 pairs teams are in the Nationals. Both tournaments are snooker events. Interclub Snooker starts on the 25th June, we have 5 teams entered. The interclub billiards were held on the 10th June. We had only one team in on finals day. The team of Rob Evans, Maurice Lancaster and Peter Gormley competed in the Division 1 final. They lost 2-1 with Rob Evans winning. Spotted on the tables the other week having a hit was Dave Merideth. Winner of 7 National Snookers Titles and winner of 13 National Billairds Championship. Watch this space. Gary Olliver whom has also won 13 National Billiards has moved to Wellington to live. We wish him well. Cheers, Pot Black

TABLE TENNIS On 5th of June, we had a successful Hornby vs Richmond Trophy night. This is a resume of old days tradition where members from two clubs only having a social game night rather than competition. Hornby club has well planned for this to happen and this even has been agreed by two clubs to continue in the future. We have also started a day time mid-week table tennis session.

Time for this event is every Tuesday morning from 10 am - 12 pm. New players welcome. Kind Regards, Watson Ou

That is just some of the comments received throughout the evening of Thursday 28th June from the travel section members who attended the mid-winter Christmas dinner in the Chalmers restaurant (104 in all when two or three at last minute could not make it) The time went way too quickly.

The buffet was just incredible, and our excellent duo of “Fire and Ice” who harmonise beautifully, played soft mellow music while we ate, then hyped it up a bit after dinner which brought crowds to the dance floor.
