Volume 5, Number 7.

Estes Park’s historic mainline Protestant congregation founded in 1907.

Core Value: The Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies is a Sacred Community formed around Jesus the Christ where we experience God’s presence in our lives and service together.

Newsletter Deadline for the August issue is July 18. Send pictures and stories to [email protected]. Thanks.

Ginger & Ivan Wilkinson: “We have been members of PCCR for 22 years. Many people have touched our lives and we have been challenged in our spiritual lives, as well as our ideals. There is no doubt we want to support our church with our financial gifts. When the Foundation invested in Estes Valley Legacy Giving as a resource, we made an appointment with the assurance there would be no pressure and no sales pitch. We spent approximately one hour with Jerry Kennell, EVLG Representative, as he explored giving options, goals and tools for giving. This encounter has motivated us to consider modifications to our will and to have discussions with our children as to how they may be impacted by our decisions. We hope our example will encourage you to also evaluate your position in relation to the Legacy giving.”

Peter Plaut: “We live in a town with a relatively high median age, and our church reflects that demo-graphic. Partially in recognition of our older population, a few years ago several nonprofit organizations got together and formed an organization called Estes Valley Legacy, with the intent of providing the community with information about estate planning. Our church Foundation became a member of the organization last year. Membership entitles our congregation to get free, knowledgeable assistance in understanding and evaluating the options for developing an estate plan. A key resource for us is Jerry Kennell. He is employed by the Estes Valley Legacy and is an experienced advisor in estate planning. Jerry is also one of the leaders of the Journeys Class and is familiar with our church. On a personal note, I have known Jerry for several years, beginning when I served on the board of the Estes Valley Library and Jerry was the Library’s development officer. I whole-heartedly recommend him for help in getting oriented to the tools that are available for planning how to allocate one’s estate.”

Pie Social Sunday, August 6The Membership/Hospitality Committee will host a Pie Social with an old fashioned hymn sing along on Sunday, August 6 at 11:00, following worship. The motto will be “Bake or Buy, Bring a Pie,” so let the office know if you can bring a pie. There also will be

a pie sign up sheet at the July 9 picnic and at the July 27 Grace and Grub. We will celebrate the 110 Year Anniversary of PCCR.

From the Minister’s Desk – July 2017July is still a couple of weeks away but the summer has already been running full steam ahead! As always, there are plenty of opportunities for us to do the Lord’s work in the community. We will be providing a place to sleep for a youth group from Minneapolis, Minnesota to stay while they do a service project for the Rocky Mountain National Park and in other parts of the community. We will also host a concert supporting the Estes Park Veterans Memorial fundraiser (concert is being headed up by our very own Bob Gunn). Our church picnic is Sunday, July 9th at the Marina and we will be host to a wonderful organ demonstration by Larry Gillum on July 23rd. Yes, folks, another busy month here at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies! It is also a time of mixed emotions as we say farewell to Lindi Carmichael who has done a phenomenal job as our Office Coordinator. Lindi has been a wonderful member of the team and will be missed. She will still be in the area and in church, but no longer in the office during the week. Please take a moment to thank her for the wonderful work she has done! We are also pleased to welcome Terry Brigham to our staff as the new Office Coordinator. Terry comes to us from Sterling, Colorado, with a wealth of administrative and office experience. Welcome to the family, Terry! Be sure and stop by the office to welcome her after she begins on July 10th.This is as much for your pastor as it is for you… in the midst of the hustle and bustle that is summer, don’t forget to take a moment to simply be still in the presence of our Lord here in this beautiful part of God’s creation!Grace and Peace,Michael

Session Report Monday, June 19• Received a positive report from the Independent Accountants Review for the Foundation and for PCCR. No

modifications need to be made for our accounting processes.• Noted that PCCR is now certified as an emergency shelter should the need arise.• Heard from Finance committee that our revenues are falling a bit behind at this time. • Heard from the Vision 20/20 Committee that over $113,000 has been pledged to the capital campaign.• Scheduled a Planned Giving workshop for August 7 at 6:30 p.m. open to all the congregation, especially

summer folks.• Reluctantly received Lindi Carmichael’s resignation as Office Coordinator. • Heard from Personnel Committee that Terry Brigham has been hired as the new Office Coordinator. Lindi

will be training her.• Noted that the annual golf tournaments will both be held on Aug. 27.• Heard from Membership and Hospitality that the All Church picnic will be on July 9 at the Marina, and the

all church Pie Social and Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing Along will be on Aug. 6, with special recognition for those who have been members of PCCR for 40 or more years.

• Learned from Building and Grounds that a recording meter has been installed to track specific electric usage in order to determine why our electric bills have increased.

• Noted that the new PCCR web site is now fully functional and everyone is encouraged to visit it.

New PCCR Website is ActiveOur new electronic front door – pccrusa.org – is up and running. Take a look. The new website offers a lot of information, plus it’s fun to use.The Home Page starts with a header panel with our logo, address, phone number, link to directions and our Facebook page, and a full menu of topics to be found on the site. The Home Page then shows a banner of pictures of the church. The pictures rotate for a short slide show. After the photo banner is a welcome section that introduces major areas of interest, especially for people who are looking for a new church home: Who We Are, Worship with Us, and Get Involved. You can click on any of these to take you to the logical subtopics. Following this is a map of where we are located and another link to directions to get here. Next is a news panel with three main headings. A block called Latest News and Announcements provides headlines of activities and a link to a news page that contains additional information and more news items. A block for the Weekly Bulletin summarizes the upcoming Sunday services (information will be posted here as soon as the Sunday bulletin has been prepared, usually by Wednesday). At the bottom of the block is a link that will retrieve the bulletin, so that you can check in advance on the details of the worship services. Below the Weekly Bulletin block is one for the Newsletter. The link will retrieve the most recent newsletter. Past issues of the newsletter can be found under the News menu item at the top of the Home page. At the bottom of the news panel is a link for Do You or Your Friend Need Help? This offers an easy way to send an e-mail to the pastor. Next is the church Calendar. This duplicates the desktop calendar used in the church office and is updated real time as changes get posted. The calendar shows a year’s worth of events.Look for a red panel at the very top of the Home Page for emergency announcements, such as the church being closed because of severe weather. You will not see this panel unless there is an emergency, but keep it in mind and use the website as a first channel to check on closures or other unusual events. The inner pages of the website mirror the structure of the Home Page. Each page has a banner photograph, along with the same header panel with the full list of menu items. Additionally, each page has a set of Quick Links to material related to the page. Use these to move easily through the site. You can always get back to the Home Page or to any of the major topic pages by using the menu items in the header panel. Many of the pages contain forms that are designed to send e-mails to the pastor or to other people in the church. Check out the Prayer Request page, for example. Also note the page under Contact for Website Questions and Corrections. Use this to report errors on the website and to request changes and additions. You can offer material for publication, including photographs, by using the form on that page. You can subscribe to the monthly newsletter (for postal service or e-mail delivery) by using the Subscribe quick link under the main menu item for News. The Contribute page has an easy way to submit a pledge to the church to support church operations (also known as the annual stewardship pledge) or to the church foundation to contribute to the Vision 2020 campaign and the foundation endowment. These forms are sent by e-mail to the church’s financial secretary. They go nowhere else. The Contribute page also has a link to make a credit card payment to either the church or the foundation. No credit card information is stored, and the payment information goes only to the church financial secretary. You can view the website on all devices, from a phone to a computer projector. The screen will automatically reformat to fit the size of your device. The view will be different if you hold your device horizontally, then switch to a vertical format. Some of the images may not show completely when you look at a page in portrait mode on a phone, but the text content will all be there. Phone numbers will be underlined on a phone, and can be dialed from the screen if your device and software accommodate this feature. Our website was developed by Old Town Media of Fort Collins. We provided the content, but they did the creative work. They also designed our new logo. They provided wonderful guidance throughout the development and were most responsive to our desires. We have contracted with them for ongoing support, so that the software that runs the site will be maintained and updated as needed. The address for the website is the same as we used previously: pccrusa.org.

Make it real: Gifts of Real Estate to PCCRGifting real estate can be one of the smartest ways to make a charitable contribution. Real estate comes in many forms. There are residential properties such as houses, condominium units, vacation places, and apartment buildings. Examples of commercial real estate would be warehouses, individual restaurants or stores, and multiple-business properties such as strip malls. Then, of course, there’s good old land, whether held for farming, for benefiting from natural resources, or for eventual development.Likewise, there are many ways you can use real estate to provide support for Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Here are some of the possibilities:• By means of an outright transfer• Through a bargain sale• As an asset used to fund a charitable remainder trust• With respect to a retained life estate arrangement involving your own personal residence or farmMoreover, each of the options listed above can be implemented either currently or in an estate plan at the end of life. Lifetime gifts offer several advantages. First, they feature income tax deductions based on the property’s fair market value, as determined by an appraisal that meets IRS requirements. Next, capital gains tax that would be owed if you sold the property is reduced, delayed, or sometimes even avoided entirely. This can be especially important when part of the gain would be attributable to depreciation claimed in years past. Third, your gift can help PCCR right away, either by producing money that can be devoted to the current mission of the church or by building the endowment for the future. As you might imagine, with an asset as valuable as real estate, care must be taken in structuring any sort of charitable gift. This means that PCCR (or the trustee of a trust created by you) will need to be satisfied with the property’s physical, financial, and legal characteristics. Potential items to be addressed might include environmental issues, the existence of a mortgage, or the manner in which the real estate is titled.Whether it’s due to market conditions, personal lifestyle considerations, or other reasons, if “the time has come” to make some disposition of a property you own, think about using the property – or perhaps just a portion of it – to make a truly meaningful gift to PCCR. Through the PCCR Foundation’s membership in Estes Valley Legacy, you can be connected, confidentially, to the right resources to plan the real estate gift that best fits your personal situation. For a confidential exploration, contact Jerry Kennell, Estes Valley Legacy planned giving education at (970) 480-7703 or email to [email protected].

This Jesus Seminar “in the Rockies” compares early and current situations of Christ movements. The dynamic beginnings of first-century Jesus communities are legendary but sometimes forgotten or contested. The majority of twenty-first -century American churches are in cataclysmic decline, but thousands of others are experiencing creative and courageous growth. Join Hal Taussig and Sarah Morice Brubaker in exploring the social dimensions of today’s churches and early communities in search of inspiration and direction for the future.

Faith Communities in the 1st and 21st Centuries

A note from your Mission CommitteeRecently six of our members joined with others from Estes Park and journeyed to Alamosa on a mission trip. They spent four days working with La Puente Homes, Inc. With our church’s help they were able to purchase, for the renovation on a 1920’s gasoline station to be used for Americorps Volunteers, 2 new entry doors with new lock-sets, storm doors, all the framing materials for installing the doors, and new light fixtures throughout the building. Also, 35 gallons of paint were purchased, and applied to the interior of the gas station building and the exterior of a newly acquired maintenance shop building. In addition to working hard, these volunteers had the joy of knowing they were making a physical difference in an impoverished community. The next work trip to La Puente (this fall) is scheduled for October 5-8. Please contact John Cooper if you are interested in joining them on this worthy cause. For more information about La Puenta see their website: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/servecolorado/la-puente-home

Presbyterian Church in MalawiPCCR has a unique opportunity to learn more about the work of the Presbyterian Church in Malawi on Sunday, July 23. This opportunity came to us as the newsletter was about to go to press, so plans are still pending! Save the date and watch the bulletin board and church bulletin for details. The Rev. Levi Nyondo and his wife, Ruth, will be visiting Estes Park and attending Larry Gillum’s organ recital after preaching at Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Loveland Sunday morning. They will be in the USA for about a month, ending at the Malawi Mission Network conference in Omaha on August 10 – 13, where Rev. Nyondo will be the keynote speaker. Rev. Nyondo is the General Secretary of the Synod of Livingstonia, CCAP (Church of Central Africa Presbyterian), which covers the northern third of Malawi. The Synod has a membership exceeding that of the PCUSA; because of a shortage of trained pastors, each pastor serves congregations numbering in the thousands divided into as many as a dozen prayer houses. As General Secretary, he oversees the work of congregations, numerous schools and several mission stations which usually include medical facilities.

Headteacher Mr. C.K. Mondwe Headteacher Mr. C.K. Mondwe of Embangweni School for Deaf in Malawi is looking for financial support to re-start the poultry project at the school. The entire flock of chickens was wiped out by disease several years ago. Project plans include rebuilding the chicken houses and runs, purchasing 150 chicks, starter and growth feed, vaccine and other expenses. Benefits will include teaching the deaf children how to raise and care for poultry so they can in turn teach their families in the villages while developing a sense of pride that they can provide some of their own food. The chickens and eggs will become in time a much-needed protein source for the 200 students who live at the school. The chicken manure will be incorporated into the school vegetable gardens. Mr. Mondwe estimates the start-up cost at about $900. If you would like to help support this “chicken” project, donations can be sent to PCCR (memo line: Embangweni Deaf) or to Carol Nussbaumer.
