Message from the President

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND - by John Donne

No man is an island, Entire of itself, Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thy friend's Or of thine own were: Any man's death diminishes me, Because I am involved in mankind, And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.

This classic poem illustrates how we are all inter-related, how we are affected by each other’s ac-tions and how all of us are bound as one. Occa-sionally I hear questions as to exactly what are the benefits that our member leagues receive through their relationship with the Arizona Art Alliance. Well, first of all, the Arizona Art Alli-ance is the only organization that I know of that exists for the sole purpose of maintaining a posi-tive relationship with various public and private entities to provide the most favorable working art environment possible for all of our member art leagues. By collaborating with these entities, the Art Alliance raises awareness about our member leagues and the contribution that artists make to the community. Since the Arizona Art Alliance is not tied to any specific geographical area, it has a non-biased base that represents a broad spec-trum of art viewpoints. We amplify the voices of our member leagues by speaking as one voice of unity to promote our artists and our member leagues. Because of our strength through num-bers, we often provide a more powerful voice

speaking in favor of promoting the visual arts within the community. “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” The Arizona Art Alliance works to provide opportunities for our member groups to exhibit and share their talents to benefit themselves, our state and its communities. Our group strength, in the long run, provides increased strength to the indi-

vidual member leagues and to their artists.

One way in which the Alliance partners to pro-mote art awareness is working directly with the Offices of Kyrsten Sinema and David Schweikert in sponsorship of their Art endeav-ors within the public high schools in their indi-vidual congressional districts. The Art Alli-ance provides display panels and art services that would often not be possible without our assistance. Both of these congresspersons are staunch supporters of the Arts in their dis-tricts and have come to us for assistance. The Arizona Art Alliance is a member of the Alli-ance of Arizona Nonprofits, works directly with the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and with the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Ser-vices. We continually promote and strive to increase the visibility of our member leagues, along with their individual artists. The dues the Alliance receives from our member leagues go directly toward maximizing that awareness and toward the outreach efforts that we, and our leagues, provide together. The Arizona Art Alliance is an ALL VOLUN-TEER organization with an exceptionally low financial overhead. There is no fluff! This al-lows the Alliance to maximize its efforts to of-

fer quality art exhibits and outreach programs.

Over the past two years, the Arizona Art Alli-ance has established a consistent and reliable Fine Art Exhibit and Sale platform that our leagues and their artists can depend on. We have formed partnerships with three quality Valley galleries to provide three shows, yearly, in three diverse Valley locations (Holland Gal-lery, WHAM West Gallery, and Vision/Chandler Center for the Arts Galleries). Only artists who belong to Alliance member groups may enter these exhibitions, providing opportunities for

Page 4: July 2016 Newsletter - AZ Art Alliance · 2016. 7. 4. · July 2016 “ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART” July 2016 Newsletter veterans, special UPCOMING EVENTS Exhibits hosted by the

July 2016 4 “ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”

member group artists to display their work, in addition to those exhibit opportunities provided by their own leagues. The Art Alliance recently initiated our yearly Online Art Competition, http://azartalliance.com/online-competition-2/ which was a great success and gives our members an opportunity to exhibit and compete without leav-ing the comfort of their own homes. All of these events require very little or no volunteer time from participants, and no expense to member leagues. Our events are open to all of our mem-ber group artists, whether Alliance-Juried or not, as long as they maintain their member league membership. Our events allow artists to com-pete with members of other art leagues to maxi-mize competition and provide exhibitions of the highest quality artworks of our member artists. Competition produces quality and quality is the

one thing all serious artists strive for.

Our ongoing Outreach Programs, Extra Special Art (Special-needs Students), Caring Thru Art (Assisted Living Seniors), Opportunity House (Grade School Students), and The Art of Healing (Military Veterans) gives our artists who enjoy helping others a chance to share their talents and skills with those who have challenges and can benefit from the healing powers of art. The Act of “Creating” is a medicine in itself and those who can spread the magic are truly an-gelic. The Alliance teams with our member or-ganizations to help provide art instruction, sup-plies, display opportunities, and monetary dona-tions to develop and implement local art educa-

tion and mentoring programs.

The Art Alliance offers member leagues, and their artists, discounts on the rental of display panels, lighting, and tents. Historically this has minimized exhibition expenses for individual art-ists in such events as Hidden in the Hills, WHAM

Fest, and other member league events.

Our Website, azartalliance.com, and our Newslet-ter can be used to help promote individual league events. This provides our member groups an additional avenue for communication and information they wish to share with the pub-

lic.

There is another benefit not often seen as ob-vious. Many of our Alliance members are sen-iors. The Alliance, along with the member leagues, gives our individual senior artists ac-tivity, purpose, and personal interaction that many, as we age, find missing. We keep our seniors producing and being productive. We seniors have a lot to give and lots of experi-ence to share. Even with retirement or when we slow down professionally, we may still have plenty of energy and ideas. Art provides an outlet to share that energy and those ideas, and sharing one’s experience is possibly one

of life’s most precious gifts.

The Vision of the Arizona Art Alliance has al-ways been to bring visual artist organizations together to sell quality, affordable visual art and to provide art education to the commu-nity. When we speak as one, with one loud voice, it only serves to strengthen the effects that our leagues have on the community. It is through the combined efforts of the Arizona Art Alliance and our member leagues that we make our artwork available for a greater part of our community to see and enjoy. Together we maximize the positive benefits that the Vis-ual Arts can bring to our community. Through the collaboration and fellowship of our Alli-ance, we can significantly influence society for the better whether through our artwork or by reaching out to help others. Together we leverage our collective power, ensuring every resource possible stays dedicated to our indi-vidual members and the partnership we share

with our member leagues.

Juror Sterling Edwards, a nationally known contemporary watermedia master, selected 134 artists to participate in the Exhibition. Over 500 artists from the 12 watercolor so-cieties submitted 1065 entries! So the competition was very stiff! The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will run from June 9 – August 28, 2016.

Get ready to be impressed.

Get ready to be shocked. Get

ready to jump up and down

and wave your arms while

yelling, “The Arizona Art Alli-

ance has the best blogger in the whole wide

world.” Uh, that would be me. Now let me ex-

plain my notoriety. This month I will introduce

you to yet another NEW art form. Last month

was MINIATURE ART. And this month we will ex-

plore – drum roll please, P.I.N. ART. If you’re

thinking that P.I.N. ART is art made with pins,

you would be wrong. P.I.N. is an acronym which

stands for POST IT NOTE. That’s right folks.

POST IT NOTE ART. Sit down, pour yourself a

cuppa and prepare to be WOWED.

First, some background on this new Art World

Phenomenon. It all began when two offices in

Lower Manhattan began a window conversation

using post-its. One media company responded

to an anonymous “HI” message that was cre-

ated in a window across the street. Their re-

sponse, “SUP,” caused other offices to join in

the fun. And…… a whole new art form was born.

Now there are hundreds of artists who use Post-

Its as their chosen medium. The Post-It Art

movement has absolutely exploded.

Here P.I.N. Art is used to

copy and honor an old

masterpiece.

ART ICULATION

Alliance News

And here it honors Super Heroes.

Sometimes the design is very simple, mak-

ing P.I.N. a great medium for children.

P.I.N. also are perfect for complicated de-

signs.

Artists who work in more than one dimension,

love to create P.I.N. art.

Another amazing example.

This is an actual car. I think it belongs to a guy

named WALT.

This is a personal favorite. I would love to

have it for my Heart collection. Unfortunately

the price tag is $6500.

Now Dear Readers, please take a quick break.

I have a very important announcement and I

want your undivided attention.

I’m sure you have all realized through the

course of our relationship, that I look upon all

of you with envy. I’ve always wanted to be an

artist. But alas, I have no artistic talent. Or so

I thought… Get ready. Here is my announce-

ment.

Shanlee Brennan is indeed an artist.

This fact was discovered quite by accident. Al-

low me to explain. Several years ago it was

discovered that the Big Irishman can only re-

member my directives for about 17 seconds.

So I developed an elaborate reminder system.

I write each directive on a post-it note and

place it on the bathroom mirror directly above

his sink. His remembrance rate significantly

improved after I implemented this system. I

soon discovered that I was posting so many

reminders that I was going to need to get a

job just to pay for the post-its. Sooooo, I

started saving and reusing them. The inside of

his medicine cabinet door became an ideal

storage place. Soon, one door wasn’t enough

so I also began to use my medicine cabinet

door. I suddenly dawned on me the other day

as I was searching both locations for an appro-

priate reminder, that I AM AN ARTIST – a

P.I.N. ARTIST. I rest my case.

PEBBLE CREEK—OPPORTUNITY HOUSE

Summer Fun in session for the young students at the Pebble Creek Art

Club’s Opportunity House Art Program! Origami was on the schedule in

the early part of June and it was followed by a “Tangle” class the next

week. They had 19 little artists - all of them doing very well. Program

Coordinator, Nancy Hampton, expressed he thanks to all the volunteers

for great leadership and inspiration for

all this creativity. Such fun and inter-

esting ideas every year. I am always amazed at how hard

the kids work to do their best in every

class, with outstanding results. The

frames gave the “Tangle” art pieces a

very finished look - and some of the

frames got decorated, too.

The Arizona Art Alliance is making a video of the Out-

reach Programs in action starting in late June. It will be on the website and other

venues to show how these programs are helping so many.

DESERT ARTISTS EXTRA SPECIAL ART

All quiet on the school front. But, in the background all kinds of plans and

projects are being worked out for the coming school year. We are looking

at Australian Dream-Time art, works by Picasso, faux stained glass designs,

diffusion art and so much more. We have been holding sessions on Tuesdays to

check out what works best. Again this year we will have the two

schools and about 15 in each class. So, every week we will go and

have a great time with the special students—some we have had before

and some new ones.

We are looking forward to the opening in August. A side note: We plan to video the middle

school class at our first class of the new school year.
