There are so many ways we can use technology to help count our actions and better ourselves: there’s the app that ensures you drink eight cups of water a day, and the one that makes sure your heart rate is at the correct rate. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, though, if there were a watch, or an app, that allowed us to see if we were living meaningful lives each day? One that measured how many kind words we’ve spoken each day. One that measured how many hours we’ve spent sitting outside or talking with friends as opposed to running errands and staring at our computers. One that tracked how many meaningful conversations we’ve had with our family. One that recorded how many people we’ve smiled at each day. How surprised might we be to find that our goals for kindness, human interaction, and deep thought might be nearly impossible to meet? Perhaps there is a way to program your watch to meet these goals. But at the very least, what if each of us tried to set them for ourselves. How different could each of our lives be, if at the end of each day, we were forced to look back over our actions and words of the day and truly measure if we’ve made a dent in our goals? The two of us will probably never be marathon runners, or meet our 12 hour stand goals each week, or keep our heart rates as calm as they should be. Yet we’re going to shoot for a few other goals and see how well we do. We challenge you to do the same. Mini Edition

This past year for our birthdays, we each received one of those watches

that go above and beyond just telling the time. Calories burned,

directions to the nearest grocery store, stock prices, you name it. Almost

immediately, the access to constant information that the watch provided

became a source of stress. It wasn’t just the idea of always being on (our

phones already do that); it was the activity features that provided the

most disturbing information. Really, I’ve only stood up for one hour today?

Really, I’ve only reached my daily activity goal twice this week? It was

disconcerting to find out just how little we were actually moving. However,

the watch did what it was probably intended to do; like a little mini-trainer,

it provided an incentive to force ourselves to get up and go a little more

each day than we might have otherwise.

There are so many ways we can use technology to help count our actions

and better ourselves: there’s the app that ensures you drink eight cups of

water a day, and the one that makes sure your heart rate is at the correct

rate. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, though, if there were a watch, or an app,

that allowed us to see if we were living meaningful lives each day? One

that measured how many kind words we’ve spoken each day. One that

measured how many hours we’ve spent sitting outside or talking with

friends as opposed to running errands and staring at our computers. One

that tracked how many meaningful conversations we’ve had with our

family. One that recorded how many people we’ve smiled at each day.

How surprised might we be to find that our goals for kindness, human

interaction, and deep thought might be nearly impossible to meet?

Perhaps there is a way to program your watch to meet these goals. But

at the very least, what if each of us tried to set them for ourselves. How

different could each of our lives be, if at the end of each day, we were

forced to look back over our actions and words of the day and truly

measure if we’ve made a dent in our goals?

The two of us will probably never be marathon runners, or meet our 12 hour

stand goals each week, or keep our heart rates as calm as they should be.

Yet we’re going to shoot for a few other goals and see how well we do. We

challenge you to do the same.

On Tuesday, June 2, we celebrated the birthdays of Temple Israel members who live at The Gatesworth over a catered lunch. We had a lively discussion, led by Rabbi Amy Feder, and finished off the sweet celebration with a delicious cake. We wished a very special Happy Birthday to our members, Vivian Zwick and Gladys Barker, who both turned 99 years young, as well as Jerrold Rosenblum, who celebrated his 100th birthday on June 15.

If you are a Temple Israel member who will be celebrating a milestone birthday this year, please contact us to let us know! We’d love to treat you to a special birthday lunch with the rabbis.
