Inspired to Worship

Called to Serve

United in Fellowship

Dear Friends,

It has thrilled me to be around the children of our

church and community during Sunday School,

Vacation Bible School and WOW Wednesdays this

June! As always, children teach me. Here are some

lessons that I’ve learned and re-learned from them:

Jesus loves me. This I know for the Bible

tells me so. Little ones to him belong. They

are weak, but he is strong.

God’s amazing love is worth catching.

God’s amazing love is contagious!

It is a joy to learn about Jesus.

To grow in my understanding about Jesus and

my relationship with Jesus, it helps to have

teachers who love Jesus and are willing to

give their time to teach me.

Each child is a unique creation of God,

wonderfully made.

It takes patience to be a Jesus learner and a

Jesus teacher.

As teachers, we plant seeds and sometimes we

DON’T see the harvest, but Jesus calls us to

keep planting.

As teachers, we plant seeds and sometimes we

DO see the harvest, and Jesus calls us to keep

planting.

When I feel safe and loved, I can learn more

easily.

I learn from the Bible stories, crafts, other

children and the way I see and hear adults and

youth act and speak.

It is good to be a part of a Christian

community.

No one is born as a mature Christian. All of us

are on a life-long learning and loving

adventure with God.

Our Christian walk is a life-long event. Each day God

invites us to grow in our love relationship with God.

He does not want our relationship with Jesus to stay

stuck, to stall out nor grow stale. Where and how

have you grown today in your relationship with Jesus?

Is God inviting you to grow through:

A wonder of nature?

A verse of scripture?

Worship?

Sunday School 9:45 Each Week

Toddlers and Twos: The nursery teaches our toddlers

and twos Bible stories using picture cards. In July they

will learn that The Holy Spirit helps me act in good

ways.

3 year old-3rd Grade: The children will learn about:

Love; Joy; Peace; Patience; and Kindness. These lessons

are from the Old and New Testament.

4th-6th Grade Bible Scholars Class: We are using the

Submerge lesson plans that offer a one-year Bible

survey by following the Christian Year. In July, we dive

deeper into Signs in John’s Gospel: Hospitality; Faith;

Compassion; Authentic Discipleship; and Empathy.

.Vacation Bible School (VBS)

"Remember that the Lord is great and awesome." —

Nehemiah 4:14b, CEB

Vacation Bible School 2016

Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love There was lots of God’s amazing love to catch at VBS

this year! Thirty-four children and almost fifty adult and

youth volunteers experienced and learned more about

the amazing love of Jesus during VBS. We thank all

who did their part in God’s VBS work this year. A

special thank you goes to Stacey Everett, VBS Director

and De’ Layton, VBS assistant director.

Children’s Wing Cleanup

On Sunday, July 31st at 2 pm, we will have a Children’s

Wing Cleanup.

WOW WEDNESDAYS

We want to continue the wave of spiritual nurture for

the children of our church and community this summer!

Each week we have Sunday School at 9:45 for children

of all ages. For four Wednesdays, June 22nd, 29th, and

July 6th and 13th, the Missions Committee is

coordinating our new WOW Wednesdays! Children ages

3—5th grade are invited to MHUMC from 6:00—7:30

those days for Bible Stories, music, a light supper, and

activities that will help build their relationship with Jesus

and one another. The format is be similar to VBS with a

1 1/2 hour time frame. If you can help with this

expanded outreach ministries, contact Bobbie Roe,

Missions Chair, at 601-939-6182 with your area of

interest and available dates. You may also write this info

on the pew registration pads. Invitations are available for

your use at entrances to the Sanctuary.

On June 22nd, 12 children came to WOW

Wednesday! It was a great night as we learned about

how much Jesus loves children.

On June 29th, 9 children (4 from the previous week

plus 5 new children) learned about Jesus feeding 5,000

people using a little boy’s lunch of 2 fish and 5 loaves of

bread. Please invite the children in your family and in

your neighborhood to be part of WOW Wednesdays.

YOUTH MINISTRY

Sunday School 9:45 Each Week

We meet each Sunday at 9:45 am for Bible study. Joey

Fontaine teaches from BL4Y: Bible Lessons For Youth.

Ignoring God’s Truth Within Us; We’re All Under Sin’s

Power; God Sets Things Right; Not Without Hope; and

Death Becomes Life are the lessons.

Wednesday and Sunday Nights

Come join us at 5:00 pm on Sunday nights and at 6:00

pm Wednesday nights for fun, learning and fellowship as

we grow closer to God.

MissionFest

Four MHUMC youth attended MissionFest this year.

Read on for their reflection on the experience: Our

favorite part of MissionFest was being able to help the

community of Jackson through service. We learned that

some people aren't as fortunate as others. We would go

back because it’s a good experience and we all had a fun

time. Thank you for helping us go to MissionFest.

Youth in Service at VBS

The youth volunteered as helpers during VBS, June

15th-19th. They worked in assembly, recreation, story

telling and crafts time, and assisted the class leaders.

They are also helping with WOW Wednesdays.

Summer Confirmation Classes

for Rising 7th and 8th Graders

Pastor Vicki and Trey Fontaine, youth director, will be

offering summer confirmation classes for rising 7th and

8th graders. We are trying a more intensive, shorter

summer schedule in hopes of reaching more of our

students. Contact Pastor Vicki at 601-624-8734

(text/call) or email her at [email protected].

Confirmation classes will be Monday-Wednesday, July

18th-20th, and July 25th-27th, from 1-4 pm. They will

be lead by Pastor Vicki. The confirmands will participate

in a youth retreat at Benny & Patsy Rogers cabin in Arm,

MS. This retreat will be led by Trey Fontaine, Youth

Director July 29th-31st. The Confirmation class will

serve communion Sunday, August 7th as part of their

confirmation learning. Confirmation Sunday will be July

17th.

Sunday School for Adults meets at 9:45 am.

Most classes use the Adult Bible Studies book. For the

next 3 months, we will study Towards a New Creation. In

July we will start a three part study on A World Gone

Wrong, and then start a unit on Life on God’s Terms, all

from Romans.

Pastor’s Wednesday Night Bible Study

The Pastor’s Wednesday Night Bible Study will resume

July 20th 6:00-7:00 pm in the Conference Room.

New Upper Room

Where the World Meets To Pray

The Upper Room daily devotional magazine offers short,

daily devotions that apply the message of scripture to the

challenges and opportunities of everyday life. The

July/August issue cover art is Zaccheus sitting on a tree

limb. The Prayer Workshop, located in the middle, is

titled Who Do You Say that I Am? Are our questions

today the same as questions asked thousands of years ago

by Jesus’ followers? The new editions are located on the

benches outside the sanctuary, in the wall rack in the

Sunday School area, and in the Narthex. You may also

receive it by email by signing up at upperroom.org.

What Happens to the Old Upper Rooms?

The UMW Wesleyanna Circle collects used Sunday

School literature and Upper Room Devotional books. Each

quarter, the material is taken to the Central MS

Correctional Facility where the Chaplain uses it with the

inmates. There are baskets in the adult Sunday School

hallway where the books can be left when you have

finished with them. This is a simple way to share God’s

word with those that may have no other way to read it.

Busy Fingers

Conversation and companionship can

help make handwork projects go faster.

Each Thursday at 9:30 am the Busy

Fingers group meets in the church

kitchen to work on projects like knitting

and crocheting. Bring your unfinished

projects and make progress on them as

you share in fellowship.

Troop 307 Boy Scouting News

June was a busy month for our Boy Scout Troop. There

were 11 boys and three leaders that attended Summer

camps and many advancements were made. We have

had quite a few advancements take place this month.

Timothy Pepper earned his Scout Badge.

Hunter Patrick Citizenship in the Nation Merit

Badge

The following is a list of all the merit badges completed

at Summer Camp.

Luke Banta Archery

Theron Bishop Electricity, Environmental Science,

and woodcarving

Hunter Braley Emergency preparedness, Soil and

Water conservation

Trent Cliburn Citizenship in the world, Emergency

Preparedness, and Shotgun

Colc Kelly Emergency preparedness, Geology,

and Swimming.

Cody Mitchell First aid, and Swimming

Hunter Patrick Fish and Wildlife Management, and

Fishing

Timothy Pepper Fishing

Nick Taylor Insect study

Timothy Wilson Citizenship in the World.

Additionally Trent Cliburn was chosen by the entire Boy

Scout Camp leader to be the MC of the closing

ceremonies. This is a real honor of Trent.

We still need two more people on the Scouting

committee. I have had several women step up and are

ready to help. Since some of these boys are in single

(mom) parent households, having some men on the

scout committee would be very good. It only will take

about 2 hours of time once every 4 to 5 weeks. Please

pray about this important role you could play in a boy’s

future. If you have any question please contact Darrell

Roe at 769-257-9584 or [email protected].

The Lamplighters have finished their study of Plan B by

Pete Wilson. We really appreciate Virgie O’Dom spending

so much time and effort with this. We really enjoyed it.

Lamplighters made a $100 donation to VBS in honor of

Pastor Vicki, and we furnished sanctuary flowers in

appreciation of Margaret Lee’s devotion to our church

during her 8 years as the church custodian.

We will be taking our summer break in July and our next

meeting will be on August 16th. Even though we will take a

break, our circle and members will continue to be active in

ministries throughout the life of MHUMC. We have a great

group of ladies who enjoy meeting and doing things for our

church. Please consider joining us in August.

Pirate Partners Recognition

The volunteers for the Pirate Partners in Literacy

were recognized at the Pearl School Board meeting on

May 9th. There were four volunteers from McLaurin

Heights UMC: Gloria Hennington, Irl Dean Rhodes,

Bobbie Roe, Pastor Vicki Landrum. Superintendent of

Education Dr. Margigno expressed his appreciation for

those who volunteered for the tutoring program. He

stated that the test scores for the students had just been

received and showed a significant gain over last year’s

scores. A certificate of appreciation was presented to

each volunteer.

The Partners in Literacy will start again in August.

Can you find an extra hour or two each week to

volunteer in a kindergarten class at Pearl Elementary

School? Or would you rather work with younger

children at the Pearl Early Childhood Education Center?

You can sign up for the day and time that best suits you.

The teacher will have the activities planned. Both ladies

and men make fine Pirate Partners. Do you hear your

name being called? Talk to Bobbie Roe (601-939-

6182), Gloria Hennington (601-496-1081), Irl Dean

Rhodes (601-946-3326) or Pastor Vicki (601-624-8734)

planned as a follow up to Bible School for children. Twelve

children came to enjoy the food, Bible story time under the

creative. There was a whole host of adult and youth

volunteers that helped make this program a great success.

Bring your children, their friends, grandchildren and

work progressed under them. NIV 2 Chronicles 24:13

2016 Mississippi Annual Conference Report

Each year we as United Methodists come together to do

the business of our Annual Conference, but that is not all

the conference is about. This year we celebrated and

worshiped our Amazing God, we focused on the core

value, Generosity.

Bishop James Swanson opened the 2016 Session by

calling on the Laity and Clergy to live as people filled

with generosity! He reminded us that we are sent by our

generous God to be generous with ourselves and our

gifts.

The Mission offering again this year was the MS Africa

University Partnership. Our goal was to provide ten

endowed scholarships totaling $1,300,000 dollars, and at

the end of the session the total collected was $1,354,739,

exceeding our goal.

I am very proud to report that Pastor Vicki has been

reappointed to McLaurin Heights United Methodist

Church for another year. It is through her leadership that

our church was awarded the Glory Sightings Award for

2015-2016 for the East Jackson District. As Lay Leader it

is my prayer that we ALL keep looking for God's Glory

Sightings in our church and in our lives each day.
