The 28th Summer School Program Begins

The International Student Center opened the 28th Summer School Program on Wednesday, June 3, 2015. This program has an eight-week course and a four-week course. Seventeen students from Lund University, Sweden came to Gifu University to take part in the eight-week course and they will study at Gifu University till the end of July. The summer school program is held every year for the students of Gifu University’s overseas partner universities. In addition to Japanese language study, the participants have a chance to visit nearby local towns such as Mino, Toki and Gujo City to get familiar with Japanese culture and traditions. They will experience drum beating and kimono wearing in Mino City and pottery-making in Toki City. In Gujo City, they will stay at the local residents’ houses for four days. Moreover, they will attend a lecture of traditional Noh masked dance drama and Kyogen short comedic drama, watch live Sumo bouts and join one-day trip to Kamikochi and one-day trip to Kanazawa. Participants are all looking forward to a rare chance of immersing themselves in Japanese culture.

Participants of the summer school program stay at the Extracurricular Seminar House (located off-campus) for two months with the Japanese students, who serve as tutors for the summer school students. By having meals and studying together, the summer school students and the Japanese students develop strong bonds with each other. As a matter of fact, there are a number of students who studied at Lund University and other overseas universities after serving as tutors of the summer school program.

On June 3, the summer school students attended the 28th Summer School Program opening ceremony, orientation and a campus tour. Later, they were invited to a welcome party at the International Student Center. In the party, the summer school students introduced themselves in Japanese. They talked about their majors at Lund University and hobbies, etc. Then, the Japanese tutors introduced themselves. In quite a friendly atmosphere, the summer school students and the Japanese students soon opened up to one another and enjoyed conversations.

The four-week course will start from Wednesday, June 24, and three from Mokpo National University, South Korea and two from Northern Kentucky University (NKU) will attend this course. The two from NKU are the first participants in 16 years.

MOU with University of Arkansas Fort Smith

The Faculty of Regional Studies and the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (UAFS), USA signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Cooperation (MOU) on Monday, June 8, 2015 with a view to promoting exchanges among students and researchers between the two institutions.

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is a four-year, state university located in the State of Arkansas. UAFS has long been recognized for its academic contributions to the local community, the large number of its graduates who work for local businesses and industries, and for its many successful international programs. One of the factors behind this MOU are the similarities between our two institutions: both Gifu University and UAFS are mid-size universities, both are located in the suburbs of major cities, and both focus on education and research activities in support of their respective local communities.

The signing ceremony held at the Faculty of Regional Studies was attended by Dr. Paul B. Beran, Chancellor of UAFS, and Mr. Takeo Suzuki, Executive Director, Office of International Relations of UAFS. Gifu University was represented by Dr. Fumiaki Suzuki, Executive Director for International Affairs and Public Relations, and Prof. Akiro Takeuchi, Dean of the Faculty of Regional Studies. Dr. Beran, Dr. Suzuki, and Prof. Takeuchi signed the MOU.

The two UAFS delegates later visited the Office of President and met with President Hisataka Moriwaki. Dr. Suzuki, Dr. Toyohide Takeuchi, Director of International Student Center, Prof. Akiro Takeuchi, Prof. Kazuo Nakagawa of the Faculty of Regional Studies, Ms. Junko Sugaya, Director of the International Planning Division and Ms. Konoe Kamei of the same division were also in attendance at this meeting. Dr. Beran presented an overview of UAFS, noting that its campus has been designated as "Best Maintained Landscape in the Nation" in 2003. He also mentioned the university’s ideal study and research environment, with its full range of modern equipment and facilities, many of which were built through private donations. In a wide-ranging presentation, he also spoke of the many international students currently studying at UAFS. Those attending the presentation were very interested to learn about UAFS’s business partnership with local companies such as Wal-Mart Inc. (which is headquartered in Arkansas) and the University's demonstrated ability to secure funding.

3

This MOU is expected to play a crucial role in transforming the two universities into more globally-focused institutions and to facilitate exchanges among students and researchers. At the same time, the new relationship is expected to help support the Faculty of Regional Studies in initiating a new program called the “International Liberal Arts Course,” which is scheduled to be launched in 2016.

Meeting participants expressed their hopes that the MOU between Gifu University and UAFS represents the first step toward a long-term, vital friendship in the years to come.

The 9th Local Business Inspection Tour On June 30, a total of fourteen Gifu University executive members including President Hisataka Moriwaki, as well as executive directors, vice-presidents and auditors, joined the 9th Local Business Inspection Tour. This tour is organized by Gifu University in order for the University to contribute to the promotion of regional businesses, and to deepen understanding about local business activities in view of the creation and development of attractive work for the University’s students in the future. The tour participants visited two companies; Kawai Lime Industry Co., Ltd. and Nabeya Co., Ltd., both of which are well-known as major manufacturers in the western Seino Region and Gifu City, respectively. Many alumni of Gifu University have worked at these two companies. After inspecting the factories, the participants exchanged opinions with the presidents and engineers of the companies. At Kawai Lime Industry, President Shinichi Kawai presented an overview of the company, and then one of the University alumni working at the company gave the following explanation concerning the company’s ongoing efforts: in addition to the manufacturing and sale of lime products, the company is actively conducting many R&D projects for new functional material products by taking their potential use in multiple business fields into account. Next, the participants observed pulverization equipment and incinerators at the lime pulverization factory, the lime incineration factory and the lime manufacturing factory. At a demonstration of a flat panel speaker which is still under development, the participants were amazed at the level of perfection of the speaker. Kawai Lime Industry is aspiring to put this speaker into completely new markets in the near future. At Nabeya, President Tomohiko Okamoto made a brief presentation about the company, which was followed by the engineer’s explanation of jigs, a major product of the company. Later, the participants were invited to observe the process of melting metals, a traditional procedure still undertaken at casting factories in Japan. They also inspected the jig manufacturing factory capable of dealing with made-to-order products. The two companies have a long history of business in Gifu Prefecture, and both are putting strong emphasis on preserving traditional techniques and developing human

14

resources. At the same time, they are very enthusiastic about developing and researching new materials, new technologies and entry into new markets. All of the participants felt the companies’ strong commitments to their business operations and future development. Gifu University is currently promoting the government’s Center of Community (COC) Program with an aim to foster the human resources that the community truly needs, and to encourage young people to take root in the region. In this respect, it is believed that visits to local businesses by the University’s executive members are of significant importance. The visits will help University officials understand the status of local businesses and make many discoveries about them. Gifu University will continue to organize local business tours for human resource development and support the employment seeking activities of the University’s students.
