July has come and gone. What a fantastic
demonstration and workshop. Rudy is absolutely a
must see at any time. His skill as a turner and his
ability to express what he is doing and why are sec-
ond to none. In a short morning on day one of his
workshop every single person taking the workshop
improved their cut so significantly that the noise in
the shop had decreased enormously. That was nec-
essary to accomplish that very thin wing and every-
one completed their project.
The last 2 months were very weak in attend-
ance. I believe that is because of so many members
with a lot of other commitments. I do understand,
however those folks who so tirelessly put these
meeting together also have other commitments but
have stepped up to ensure that CAW is one of the
best clubs within the AAW. Therefore I am going to
recommend that next year we not meet during
June, July, and August.
As previously mentioned, CAW is one of the
best. I would put our demonstrations and work-
shops up against any club. All of this is accom-
plished at a very, very low cost to members. I have
personally attended demonstrations at other clubs
and have paid as high as $35 dollars just for the one
demonstration. There are also some clubs that have
no professional demonstrations and meet for an
hour or so once a month. I’m not sure what their
dues are, but I do not see much return on their
continued page 2

Saturday, August 8, 2015 Barbara Dill
Barbara is known for her multi-axis and split
turnings and more. Barbara doesn't use a skew,
says that every time she does she hurts her wrist.
Instead she uses a 30 degree bevel spindle gouge
(normal is about 45%). The last time she was here,
she brought along her own grinder to help people
make their spindle gouges "pointy", if desired.

For any that may see the above as a bit more formal than previously in force, please be aware that these policies are necessary to ensure the staff spends more time supporting the workshops rather than dealing with spectator and administrative issues.

investment. And the opportunities available within
CAW for every single member to partake in at skill
enhancement are outrageous. I know of nowhere
that you try so many different skills without laying
out more than $20. All of this comes at a price,
though not monetarily, and would be impossible but
through the hard work of volunteers. We need
some new, different people to step up and help out.
If only the same few keep shouldering the responsi-
bility we will surely stop growing. Let someone
know that you will help. It is a great opportunity to
not only strengthen CAW; it will give you a chance
work with and meet some outstanding people.
CAW’s Cynthia Gibson Workshop in September
is currently full; however there may be a few open-
ings within the CAT workshop. Contact Ken Poirier
We will provide further updates the closer we get.
We still have openings in several exceptional
workshops, so please give some thought to signing
up.
Happy and Safe Turning!
