MAY NEW MEMBERS & RENEWALS

CAPE CORAL VOICE!Annette Carrasquillo, LAI Design Associates

2014 Chairman

Recently, the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral launched a new website called Cape Coral Voice.

This site is being used by the Government Affairs Committee to provide our members with upcoming government related events, information, updates and news regarding legislation on City, County, State and

Federal levels, voter information, political news, voter registration, hyperlinks to government resources and much more. Our members will also be able to contact our elected officials directly through this site.

The Government Affairs Committee members attend the City Council meetings each week. We are also including a list of upcoming Council meetings with GAC member names and contact information that are attending the council meetings. This is two-fold. First, so GAC members can see which meetings they are assigned to and second, so that if you have concerns about an issue on the city council agenda, you can e-mail them. A report will be posted on this site that summarizes these meetings.

Occasionally, we will be conducting surveys on governmental issues in order to make sure we are acting in the best interest of our members. Soon you will see a logo with hyperlinks in our newsletters and our website in

order to keep the site top-of-mind. In the future, we will organize e-mail campaigns that encourage our members to share their thoughts on specific issues before our elected leaders.

CapeCoralVoice.com is a one-stop website created so that our Chamber members can have easy access to government resources and current information to meet their needs. Our members will notice fewer government related e-mails from the Chamber staff as we utilize this tool with a greater frequency.

Please visit www.capecoralvoice.com to become familiar with the site, as we strive to meet our member’s needs.

Happy 4th of July!

THE SECOND BRAIN Salvatore Lacagnina, D.O.

Vice President of Health & Wellness, Lee Memorial Health System

Did you know that more than half of the total immune system in the body is contained within the

intestinal tract? I would venture to guess that most people when thinking about the gastrointestinal tract simply think about its function in relation to the absorption of nutrients. It is true that the surface of the intestinal tract is lined with millions of tiny folds called microvilli that work to absorb

nutrients across the intestinal lining into the bloodstream. But on the other side of the intestinal wall sits a large portion of the immune system that is there to defend the body from “foreign invaders”. This portion of the G.I. tract and immune system serves as a gatekeeper to protect the body from the absorption of harmful substances and therefore function as a proverbial second brain.

These specialized immune cells monitor the metabolic substances attempting to cross the intestinal wall and if harmful invaders are present, the immune system sends out specialized cells that will help to minimize the damage. In essence the G.I. tract is the first line of defense against harmful invaders. The reason that the G.I. tract has been dubbed “the second brain” is because it contains a nervous system that communicates back-and-forth between the G.I. tract and the brain in your head. This communication occurs by way of many different hormone messengers with complicated names such as cholecystokinin, ghrelin, secretin, gastrin, somatostatin and more. Serotonin is one of the best-known messenger substances and is related to mood disorders such as depression. Serotonin is produced in the brain but since the majority of serotonin is produced in the G.I. tract, changing the levels of serotonin in the body will not only affect the brain but will also affect the gut. This can result in unwanted consequences such as an increased risk of bone loss when antidepressant medications are used.

Another example of a gut-brain connection is celiac disease and dementia. Celiac disease is a disorder of the small intestine that is damaged by a protein called gluten which is found in cereal grains. There appears to be a genetic susceptibility to this grain protein causing celiac disease. The symptoms may include chronic constipation, bloody diarrhea, autoimmune disease, failure to thrive, and a high incidence of dementia. The latter occurs because of an activation of the intestinal immune system and this ends up triggering inflammation in many areas of the body including the brain. We do know that there are many medications that are used in an attempt to treat this brain dysfunction but it is probably more important to treat the chronic inflammation within the gut in order to lower the overall risk and incidence of dementia. There have been a number of clinical studies that have demonstrated improvement in neurologic function in patients with multiple sclerosis when they are placed on a gluten-free diet.

Unfortunately, despite the presence of immune cells within the GI tract, sometimes harmful substances do get across this barrier and cause health problems. An example of this is the “leaky gut syndrome”. Research has confirmed that leaky gut syndrome primarily occurs after the consumption of foods high in fat and sugar or from ingesting other harmful chemicals and food substances. Researchers believe that many caustic substances will affect the integrity of the mucosal barrier including food allergens,

infectious bacteria or viruses, yeast, drugs, alcohol or harsh chemicals. It is interesting to note that in addition to the inflammation caused locally in the G.I. tract, these disorders also cause distant chronic symptoms such as sinus congestion, joint pains, headaches, skin problems like eczema, and chronic anxiety disorders. These distance symptoms occur because of the widespread inflammatory reaction that occurs when these immune cells are activated within the G.I. tract. All of these examples show the elaborate interplay between the cells of the G.I. tract, the nervous system, the endocrine/hormone system in the body and the distant organs including the brain.

If we focus on the G.I. tract inflammation that occurs when harmful substances are taken in with our food, what can we actually do to alleviate these local and distant symptoms?

In looking for this answer I found good information in Dr. Jeffrey Bland’s book called “The Disease Delusion” in which he talks about the “Four R” program. This stands for remove, replace, reinoculate and repair. He recommends removing food allergens or substances that produce sensitivities including gluten from grains, casein (cow’s milk) protein, soy products, peanuts, eggs and shellfish. He also recommends reducing exposure to moldy and fermented foods (cheese, mushrooms, wine, etc.)

He then recommends replacement with digestive enzymes; reinoculation with probiotic supplements; and repairing the damaged gastrointestinal barrier with supplements such as zinc, vitamin B5, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and certain amino acids.

I do like this approach as this is consistent with other gastrointestinal restoration programs which help to decrease inflammatory bowel symptoms and other disorders that might be distant from the G.I. tract. We know from research and anecdotally that changing ones nutrition often times results in improvement in other diseases. As an example, altering the intake of certain foods when an individual has an inflammatory bowel disorder can also result in improvements in chronic arthritic joint pains, skin disorders and other inflammatory conditions.

One anecdotal report that I have mentioned in previous articles has to do with the nutrition program that we have for our CHIP participants. These are the individuals in our complete health improvement program. These individuals are following a Plant-Based Nutrition Program and have reported tremendous improvements in chronic arthritic symptoms, chronic headaches, chronic skin problems, and an overall significant improvement in energy levels. The research and our anecdotal reports prove to me that removing harmful substances from our food products and replacing them with nutrient dense foods have a tremendous impact on overall health and longevity.

In summary we can see that the digestive system, nervous system, immune system, and hormone producing endocrine system all function together in an interconnected way to hopefully keep out harmful invaders and keep the body and brain healthy. In this fashion the G.I. tract again functions as a “second brain” to maintain overall good health and vitality.

Stay well my friends and as always please send questions and comments to [email protected]

I LOVE MY FAMILY…I LOVE THE GATORS…AND I LOVE BROWN LIQUOR AND GOOD

CIGARS.Christopher T. Spiro, Spiro & Associates

Yep, that’s it. That’s my social media persona. If you are friends with me on Facebook or follow

me on Twitter or Foursquare or Instagram or Pinterest or whatever the latest social

media app I’m trying out is, that’s what you’ll know about me. Now because of the business I am in, I can get away with it a little more

than say my banker, lawyer or doctor friends. People have come to expect this behavior from me. And, as I always say “don’t believe everything you see and read on social media.”

But what you won’t see me doing online is airing my dirty laundry. You won’t see me trashing people, family or friends. Okay Spiro, we get it you a happy go lucky kinda guy in the social media stratosphere…so what’s your point. My point is simple…I had a position open at my shop for a high profile job and I had this amazing applicant apply. The applicant’s resume was outstanding. The applicant’s work samples exceeded my expectations. The applicant did very well in the face-to-face interview and with my senior staff interview. The applicant had also “friended” me via Facebook.

At first it was very endearing, the applicant posted about having a great interview with great people and finally had the opportunity to put his skills to work for a great company. I thought to myself, very cool, the applicant is excited and the applicant didn’t divulge the agency name or mine personally.

Then that weekend something happened in the applicant’s life. Not really sure what it was, but I watched over the weekend and the

following weeks as this top applicant for a high-profile position at my agency unraveled and displayed behavior that under no circumstances would I subject my staff to. Four letter expletives. Calling out other people. Very dark references to “ending things” and going “off-line.” The applicant would then decide it was a great idea to “drunk post” and “drunk comment” on people’s postings. It was like a car accident, and I had to look.

Long story short, I didn’t hire him and I thought it important to tell him why. So I sent the applicant a Facebook in-box message and shared with my concerns. I also related that his resume was outstanding, the work samples exceeded my expectations and that once he “got it together” he should contact me.

Ya’ see, what you put out there in social media affects you, those you are friends and family with and those you work with and for. The brand you put out there is a direct reflection on the company you own or work for. Yes, I know your time is your time and it is private…then keep it just that, private.

If you are fighting with your wife, then fight with her privately and not via social media. If you are depressed, go seek counseling or your local clergy, don’t air it out online. Know that business owners, potential clients, current clients, civic associations, etc., will look at your social media persona when considering engaging you, your firm or your services. Know that in this day and age you are your social media persona.

CAPE CHAMBER IN KEY WEST!Donna Germain, Communications Director

On June 25, I had the pleasure of joining some Chamber Members and Staff on our first annual trip to Key West on the Key West Express.

Like any good visitor, I headed over to the Key West Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center with my partner in crime, Membership Sales Director Bill Johnson, Jr., for some information about the city.

There, we were greeted by Gladys who gave us a warm welcome and even talked shop with us a little about our respective chambers.

Overall, the trip was fantastic and Bill gave Key West a 10 out of 10. Kudos to Amanda Brunson, our Special Events Coordinator and the staff at the Key West Express for putting this together for our members. I cannot wait until next year!

LEADERSHIP CAPE CORAL DEFINED.Leadership Cape Coral is a thirteen week program for an adult that educates the participants about the components that make up Cape Coral. The various program days include team building, public safety, education, government, cultural opportunities, infrastructure, corrections, public services, and parks and recreation. These program days are organized and chaired by recent past graduates of the program so that they can share their knowledge concerning the various days.

There have been more than 500 graduates of the program since the charter year in 1993. Many of these graduates become a part of Cape Coral Leadership Alumni and often go on to the Advanced Leadership Cape Coral program with a focus on developing and enhancing management and leadership skills. The final tier of leadership education is Cape Coral Community Trustee program, which is by invitation and helps participants discover areas where they can assume community leadership roles.

Today, our leadership graduates are contributing to vital areas of the community such as; leadership roles in government from the City Council to the State of Florida, community organizations like American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, and Junior Achievement, and leadership with our largest employers. It is not uncommon for our leadership graduates to see the value and feel the need to pass along the gift of leadership by participating in our Cape Coral Jr. Leadership program. Without a doubt the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral has one of the most comprehensive leadership programs in Florida.

ARE YOU INTERESTED?It is simple to participate, just fill out the registration form below and fax, or mail it to the Chamber. We will send you an application. Monthly payment plans are available for tuition. Tuition is $1,200 and includes hotel stay at kick-off, all meals and transportation. Be sure to fill out and submit your application before July 28, 2014.

TESTIMONIALS Leadership Cape Coral isn’t for those that are content with things the way they are. If you or the owner of your business is ready to elevate your performance within the largest city in SW Florida then please sign up for Leadership Cape Coral, it will help you reach that next level. You WON’T be disappointed!

LYNNIE GUZMAN l News-Press l 2011

Leadership Cape Coral opens doors and open your eyes to the community around you. It lays out the assets and the opportunities for you in a way no other investment of time and money could do. I have seen it change the lives of many people and I know it has changed my life forever and that is why I am still involved in Leadership Cape Coral today. The program continues to pay benefits to me, my family, my business and my community.

JOE MAZURKIEWICZ l BJM Consulting l 1993

Leadership Cape Coral helped save my life! During health day, a physician was telling us that heart attacks don’t always happen in the most common perceived way–chest pain and numbness in the left arm. I remembered that comment when the following week I had a heart attack (throbbing in both arms just below my elbows and no chest pain). I was rushed to the hospital.

HALF-TIME AT THE BIG GAME

Berge Aslanian (CDPE) Realtor, RE/MAX Island Harbor

Some of us started out this year with a lot of activity from buyers and sellers. When our

tourist season ended just after Easter, we were still servicing those clients through closing. Unfortunately, the steady flow has been interrupted and it feels like half time as we recoup and regroup.

A look at the numbers will shed some light on what we mean. For the three month period ending 6/27/14:

Single family home inventory for sale continues to decrease as listed prices continue to increase. Less homes for sale with prices rising means people are still buying. Homes sold at steadily rising prices support the fact that homes are still in demand at higher prices.

Condos for sale have decreased but listing prices are up. Numbers of condos sold this past month decreased and the median price also decreased. The inexpensive units, once again, have out sold the market.

The trend continues upward based on the properties for sale and the prices for properties sold.

In the past two weeks or so, most realtors questioned admitted that phones are not ringing nearly as much as they do during season. Most realtors have been servicing clients without replacing them in the pipeline as closings occur. Of course, there are always a few that remain very busy despite what

the majority experience. This leads us to one of the “unspoken” issues we see in our real estate

marketplace, the overabundance of Realtors. There are over 5,500 licensed residential Realtors in the Fort Myers MLS and Cape Coral MLS; at least half of these folks focus on Cape Coral properties. With a total of 426 condo and home sales in Cape Coral (not including manufactured homes, lots or commercial property) one can only wonder why there are so many if there is not enough activity to sustain them.

Whether buyers or sellers, the question you should ask a realtor who potentially might represent you is “How many transactions have you completed so far this year?” Through the end of June, any answer over twelve is a good one. Most successful realtors average two or more per month.

If you want to sell or buy, doesn’t it make sense to work with someone who is actively in the game? Most likely, that realtor will be more up-to-date on all of the factors important to a smooth and successful real estate transaction. And, they will have a solid network of specialists to satisfy most client needs. Not only does the realtor help the client select a good title/escrow company, but he or she also offers choices for financing, reputable inspectors, handymen, A/C companies, roofers, etc.

The old adage “if you want something done quickly and correctly, give it to a busy person” really is true for a variety of reasons. This really applies to Realtors! As we always say, “To insure the best outcome, work with an experienced realtor.” Happy Property Hunting or Selling!

Berge Aslanian (CDPE) is a Realtor in Cape Coral with RE/MAX Island Harbor and an active member of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral. For questions about residential real estate, please call his cell, (239) 989-3463 or visit www.RECapeCoral.com.

From Our Chairman2012

Donna Meola, Kirkwood Electric2012 Chamber Chairman

I can’t believe its December and I am writing my last article as Chairman of the

Board. 2012 has just flown by and there have been so many accomplishments I would like to share. (Please forgive me if I have forgotten any!!)

How fortunate we are to live in Paradise! Our economy is growing and the outlook for 2013 is for continued growth.

2012 was a great year!! Much was accomplished for you, including making Cape Coral a better place to do business. Here are a few of the highlights:

The Cape Coral Economic Development Office delivered on their promise to increase business, investment and employment in the area. The team closed 137 economic development projects, which represents 85 new businesses in the Cape and 52 expansions.

The EDO created a public/private strategic partnership with Lamar Advertising and HDPR Group and a new marketing campaign that says “Cape Coral is Open for Business.”

Cape Coral welcomed the opening of 1,156 businesses in 2012 including 301 place based businesses, 809 home-based businesses and 46 unspecified businesses. Commerce means shorter distances to travel for your goods and services. Commerce also means a diversified tax base and jobs!

The Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral continues to grow as well; in December 2011 our membership was at an all time low of 583 members, today we stand at 744. This resulted in a 78 percent membership growth with a retention rate of 81 percent. This could not have been accomplished without the referrals from our members, a dynamic sales team and an awesome membership development committee.

Chamber Leadership programs continue to develop community leaders. In November, 20 men and women graduated Leadership Cape Coral. Twenty-four members of the 2012 Chamber board have graduated from the Leadership Program including the Chairman and

Chair-Elect. We currently have 27 high school juniors in our Junior Leadership Program.

The Chamber successfully presented (2) Disney Institute programs in 2012. The Chamber Special Events team (yes, I say teams because it takes a village!!) brought an astounding 250,000+ citizens and members together for Red White and Boom , Golf Tournament, Farmers Market, Business Expo , Family Bowling Day, a Casino Trip to The Price is Right, as well as our Holiday Festival of Lights on December 1st.

Our on-line business directory resulted in 1,300,829 web referrals in 2012 that equates to 3,544 on average over the year per member!! (Who says membership doesn’t pay?)

A new Chamber mobile app was introduced in 2012.It was also a very busy election year for our Public Affairs

Committee! This is a group of passionate people who make sure that the “voice” of business is heard, not only at the local level but also state and federal. The candidates’ forums were very well attended by members and citizens of Cape Coral.

Our education committee hosted the Excellence in Education Awards in April and awarded $4,500 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors!

It was also the first year of our “rotating” luncheons that are being very well received by our membership.

Serving as your Chairman of the Board has been an excellent experience and I feel blessed for having had the opportunity of meeting so many of you at meetings and events.

Thank you for honoring me with your trust and commitment! It has been my privilege to work with my fellow directors and amazing staff as well as the membership.

I look forward to seeing all of you at future events and I wish you good health and prosperity!

We deliver, every day.

$LCEC works hard to manage costs, maintain the electric system, improve processes and create efficiencies so that electric rates can remain competitive for customers. We do not plan to raise rates in 2013 and will continue to do everything possible to keep rates stable.

The increase on your upcoming electric bill is due to a tax imposed by the City of Cape Coral. LCEC customers in Cape Coral will notice a change in their electric bill beginning October 1, 2013. Cape Coral City officials recently levied a public service tax of 7 percent that will be added to monthly electric bills. The new tax will be displayed on your LCEC bill as a separate line item so it can be easily identified. LCEC is required by law to collect the tax from business and residential customers who purchase electricity in Cape Coral. LCEC will deliver funds to the City similar to how Cape Coral franchise fees are delivered, which are also collected through electric bills. This new tax will be used to fund the City’s general operations. To calculate the amount the monthly public service tax will add to your electric bill, visit www.capecoral.net and utilize the PST Calculator. Please refer any questions regarding the Cape Coral public service tax to the Cape Coral Citizens’ Action Center, 239-574-0425.

LCEC hasn’t raised electric rates in nearly 5 years!
