“The music of tomorrow, today”

Page 10: July 2012- Special Edition IFL

Full of flavor, serving up intriguing songs that linger of infused catchy hooks & superb rock influences, peppered by a divine moment of kissing the maker

Mark Cashin delivers a groundbreaking debut solo album ‘Bed of Light’in recovery from a near fatal tragedy. Drawing from a wealth of life experiences, perspectives & interludes, evokes a definitively colorful, diverse & melodic foundation for a new age rock pop alternative sound. Striking a chord off sore, the first single ‘Black & Blue’ becomes the introduction to a greater audience when picked up by USA radio stations: Deaconlight.com, Error FM & 272 Records Hollywood in 2007 benchmarks the solo album across a universal threshold and the genesis of Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys begins.Captivating American hearts the early release 2009 single ‘California’ soars across 40 states in USA gaining strong follow up spins by radio & TV networks worldwide. As ‘Cashology’ the 2010 sophomore album creates a springboard to a vast array of variability revolving around favorite pastimes of power rock,

“You guys arethe sound of anew world rockmusic scene” V1Music - Canada

modern day ballads and a fresh tremendous sense of melody attracting the attention of a global audience. Gaining great press with international accolades for Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys in 2012 “you guys are the sound of a new world rock music scene.”- VI Music, Canada.“Black & Blue, Mark’s vocals & tone is unprececedented, true genius.” J.Horn Artist Expressway USA “Delivering one of the finest rock albums to surface out of Australia in a long time, it’s rock music at it’s best.” - Sub Culture Entertainment, AU “Completing an album with potential to be remembered as Aussie classics bring some freshness & indeed light to the rock genre.” Ly Joel - Reverb Magazine AU Performing with some of Australia’s most iconic musicians as: Ross Wilson, Phil Emmanuel, Richard Clapton, Mental as Anything & The choirboys all adds to an incredible resume of artist for Mark essence in

their live performances. Displays a tight, tasty brilliant set of well-constructed songs, there’s just a gallons of craft here. Standing strong with three music videos in circulation, all from the ‘Cashology’ album. ‘Hollywood’, ‘Ordinary People’ & ‘California’ hit TV networks worldwide as the music video catalogue makes it’s way onto regional drive in cinema screens. Hosting sold out shows, playing numerous festivals while selling in excess of 8,000 albums independently & their own merchandise lines, it’s not surprising there’s a new album on the way an Australian tour on the table & international touring in the pipeline.

My introduction to music began at an early age, my father Pat loved Sammy Davis Jr. & Johnny O’Keefe, Billy Thorpe etc...(naming a few of those all time greats from yesteryear). Going to

a function when I was 5 with my parents where my dad surprisingly

performed singing on stage, I was in total awe & I knew at that moment

this is what I want to do when I grow up. My interest in singing & playing drums

/ percussion truly hit when i was about 11 years old aftermy father had taken ill & a turn for

the worse in which he passed away it was very sudden. My connection to my dad & his absence in my life has really been a major contribution to the music within me. While of course also drawing from a wealth of life experiences good & some bad does give a broad perspective into future direction, it has added to the growth in my songwriting. The push to write my first debut solo album essentially originated by a near fatal car accident in which I had suffered from severe injuries. So in my length of recovery, with the flashbacks from that divine moment of kissin the maker. I started with (awkwardly & quite painfully) on the guitar & wrote the foundations & the vocals acoustically to my album ‘Bed of Light’. Which became my introduction across a global threshold commencing in USA & the genesis of the band Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys begins. Originally I am from a small NSW rural mining town Aberdare in the Hunter Valley, moving about 8 years ago & now currently reside where rural farms meet the beaches on the Central Coast in Australia approx an hour up the coast from Sydney. I also have a sporting side as well, believe it or not.

Music is my passion, this is the only thing i have really known in my life where I feel I can truly connect with people, my focus & insight pleases me that the lyrics to my songs have different meanings to people & connects to people in different ways....for me its always been about the real story a release

i guess. My tenacity to write the world a great song(s) people can sing along to; music thats

melodic and catchy, music is like a drug. Songwriting is an addiction. We all

have our voices, I think this is mine. Music is everlasting & is universal.

Why do you do what you do?

What’s your life story?

Q&A w//OGMMark Cashin and Lil The Hussys

Page 11: July 2012- Special Edition IFL

My inner drive maybe, my manic torment that never lets my inner motor rest. The ability to challenge the greater... those existing worldwide music entities & gain the world’s respect as a decent artist, songwriter, performer & band. Our influences that evoke a colourful & diverse melodic foundation which extends and drives Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys our music & our performances to being recognised by a global audience. Commitment, passion & the belief in what you do also has a major impact in the essence of who you become & who i/we actually are known to be in a band sense of Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys. I think you just have to keep on going, never give in, no matter what & use every life experience turn a negative into a positive.....i think that’s what inspires me & the band to keep doing what i/we do.

I’d say in the music sense spanning across a few different genres as classic rock, rock pop & adult contemporary. Where my influences are derived from many different artists stemming from bands as: The Police, Super Tramp, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Ozzy then to the punk styles of The Clash & The Ramones mainly. Where i am also quite into the grunge movement too & performing in 90’s as the frontman for The Australian Pearl Jam show was a totally amazing experience which i think has also added to developing of my songwriting & this question is so hard to answer for me. However i have heard some great referrals to my music being compared to: Pearl Jam, Steve Tyler, Alice in Chains, Tom Petty, Graham Parker etc.. which is quite different for me as i dont really think about how i sound or a specific style when im writing songs.

How would you best describe your style?

What’s your life story?

What inspires you to continue going through the

rough struggle becoming an up and coming artist?

“The vocals are excellent, the sound is huge, without being overly bombastic. Their overall approach is not a million miles from the musical dexterity of Alice Cooper.”- Only Aus Music - Paddy, AU

What type of story would you say

your music tells?

A story of joy, heartbreak & a menagerie of reality & fiction with mystery and capturing colour in the music. When writing i am influenced by many things & songwriting can come from anywhere or anything from an abstract concept in my mind or simply an everyday random melody brain attack that results in connecting to people & making music everyone can relate to in their own way.

“ Where on earth have these guys been hiding out over the years??? Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys have delivered one of the finest rock albums to surface out of Australia in a long time. After just one listen to ‘Cashology’ you will be realizing that these guys really do deserve to be on a world stage. This is rock music at it’s best!”- Subculture Media David Griffiths - AU

What is it that you dislike the most about the music industry?

What would you like to see different?

Which artists most inspire you?

Your favourite album of all time?

Any shout outs?

If you could work with any artist who is it & why?

There are many things I think. The few dislikes I have are: Probably the lack of focus on up & coming artists after all, aren’t they the music of tomorrow? The laziness of A&R’s in leaving their desk to discover new talent finding those independent artists recording, performing & competing with the signed artists to be heard & then to be discovered and to be recognised by a major label with exposure on a worldwide scale. The glorification of the one hit wonders & the capitalization of artists with those new music reality TV shows, here today & gone tomorrow. The lack of platforms available for independent artists & their music on radio, tv, in printed media & then the live music venues are just dwindling away, well in Australia they are!How everything in music now is a competition. The lack of interest by the broadcasting media in promoting new music, independent artists & the point to not charge them a fee - the bands are independent all their money goes into making albums, equipment, recording, touring and promoting. The pay to play guidelines ( I haven’t had this happen personally, it just seems very unfair.) The tweaking of sound from the studio to performing the same music live - alot of bands just don’t perform as they sound on their albums..& thats not cool especially for their fans & for the people buying tickets to see them play live & then the infamous lip sync. PHEW, that is a lot & does seem quite bad I have said this & then reread over it, but thems da breaks & thats the fact jack! You did say dislike yeah?

The opposite of everything above in qu 6. In Australia ohh.. and I guess & the world ....the corporate companies / larger major labels / music entertainment entities supporting & marketing Australian / global independent artists to the world with more vigour & interest in showcasing new bands, discovering new bands & scheduling the indie artists into major international support slots & onto the major music festivals there are enough of them in our country. After all the new bands are ‘the music of tomorrow, today!

Steve Tyler, Ozzy Osbourne, Coverdale, David Lee Roth, Bon Scott, and then artists as Supertramp, The Police - have all been & still are huge inspirations to me.

This is such an unfair question..LOL...i am unable to answer you...sorry.

Sure, in addition to the MC&LH extended family, my dad in heaven, my mum, my family, my band & our management team. A huge shout out to the OGM Magazine team YOU ROCK for promoting independent bands, being switched on & just darn brilliant - other media platforms should take a leaf out of your

book so massive KUDOS from MC&LH in Australia to OGM in USA & beyond. While we / Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys are in our final stages of recording our 3rd album....I think a shout out definitely to Simon Tonx our amazing producer in Australia & a true genius we are honoured to be working with again since our first album ‘Bed of Light’. Our USA family: Dj DD Thornton of Deaconlight.com in North Carolina & Larry Woodside of Error Fm in California for introducing MC&LH to their network & the world while continually playing our music on radio for the past few years in USA....We just cant thank you enough for your support & keeping us in the music loop. All the radio stations worldwide playing Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys music there are quite a few so a big BLESS to you all & thanks also for your continual support. The variety of media platforms in print, on air & on TV for picking up on our music & our band across the globe & giving us some great exposure & saying some very nice things. Which we did not pay them to say...LOL....& cheers. Last but not least: All the people that support us across the globe....with out you all it would be a really lonely & tough ride.....A Rockin thanks to you all. I will catch you on the flip side. Peace.Mark Cashin

I would love to do a duo singing with Steve Tyler or with Aretha Franklin or Diana Ross - or all three now that would be really cool.

“It’s not often that a band comes along that is so tight musically, each instrument working off each other perfectly to make an awe-some sound. Then you add Mark’s incredible voice into it and a truly epic sound is born! It’s only a mat-ter of time before these guys get signed and start doing world tours!”- Epic Radio Director, Dave Brady - AU

W hile music is constantly evolving, new artists are still getting their inspiration from the

artists that came before them. Several artists who have bridged the gap and brought us to where we are today are no longer with us. In the past decade alone, we have lost some great artists, actors, and actresses from all genres of music and all walks of life. It is important that our youth and future generations know who has led us to hip hop as we now know it. Every now and then it is crucial to recognize those who we’ve lost whose and contributions to hip hop live on today. This March marked 15 years since Biggie Smalls (know to some as Christopher Wallace or the Notorious BIG) passed away. Biggie re-introduced the hip hop community to the east coast. Rappers such as T.I., Jadakiss, and Young Jeezy seem to follow his style of music. It’s hard to believe, but eight months have rapidly gone by since we lost Heavy D. His “rise and grind” mentality stands out in my head as I think about his many roles. Heavy D was a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and senior vice president of Universal Music. His story, along with many other stories of artists, shows later generations that you have to work hard for the things you really want. Perhaps Left Eye, songwriter and

rapper, contributed the flamboyant and eclectic style still worn by the free souls in the music world today. Big Pun emerged from underground in the late 1990s with hits like “I’m not a Player” and encouraged many other Latinos to step on the scene. Many youth don’t realize it when they hear a current song that has been remade from an older one. For example, some may give Kanye and Jay Z all the credit for their hot 2011 collaboration “Otis” from their album “Watch the Throne”. The skill put into remaking a song is definitely incredible and commendable, but we must have respect for the inspiration behind it. Otis Redding recorded the original beat and song “Try a Little Tenderness” in 1966. Redding passed away in 1967. While Redding is considered a chief figure in R&B and soul music, it is apparent that he also influenced hip hop. No matter who steps on the scene, we will never have another Eazy E, 2Pac, Aaliyah, Nate Dogg, ODB, or Jam Master Jay. I know that many of our fallen soldiers are not included in this article; however, there are more hip hop angels than I am allowed space. May they all rest in peace while their legacies live on. As we move forward and live out our own dreams, let’s not forget who taught us “The Sky is the Limit”. We must pave the way for others, but also take time give thanks and pay homage to those who paved the way for us.

E X C L U S I V EMASIA is an artist who is defining her own

lane. She transcends boundaries. She has established herself as a musical pioneer, visual artist, businesswoman, and tastemaker. Her work blurs cultural expectations, challenges traditional gender norms and continues to gain respect through its seamless blending of political awareness, emcee skill and topnotch sound. On any given day she may be moving between worlds: rocking a festival crowd with dub step headliners Bass Nectar & Ill Gates, attending industry parties in New York as creative director M71 clothing line, teaching as an arts educator in high schools and universities across Canada, rehearsing with her band Dubtonic Kru at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studios in Kingston Jamaica - then returning as the hometown hero in South East Asia. This 5-foot girl from Singapore has a story to tell.

I’m originally from Singapore.

Culture Mashup: rooted in a love for Hiphop, dancehall and universal message.

A message to make people feel brave to face up to whatever struggle they are facing in life, and free up themselves to live life. I always love Peter Tosh’s “Stepping Razor” cause he tells you not to “watch his size, he’s dangerous”.

Allowing a greater diversity of thought allowed in the mainstream. For every Barbie, there should be a Warrior.

Peter Tosh, Big L (RIP), The RZA, Herbie Hancock, Gwen Stefani, Chinese Flash Mob, Damian Marley.

Casting couches & the celebration & lust of imaginary fame & money.

Love for the music & art, traveling, creating and reasoning with deep & insightful people of all cultures – knowing that a creative life is not always a stable life, but it brings happiness and fulfillment at every step.

Beyond her life as an emcee, MASIA has been the recipient of the Chinese Canadian National Council Pioneer Award, founder of the MERDEKA Group which has provided consultation and cultural marketing advice to a number of organizations (including Aritzia, Nike, Red Bull, and Athlete’s World). She is currently the Creative Director of M71 clothing launching retail locations in China, Fall 2012. Director of 360am (Usher, Ludacris) Ron Allen says “Masia One is ahead of the curve right now and I think she is going to be the next case study for success.” With an extensive body of work and a stable of producers that spans the globe, there can be no doubt that Masia has established herself as a headliner of the international urban scene.

“ I immediately recognized the talent Masia possessed, she is much more than an emcee - her chatting abilities and the reggae styles that she’s capable of doing… To me, it didn’t matter if she was a girl or Asian, she brought

something that I found more interesting to the table.” - Che Vicious, producer Aftermath // Kanye West

Peter Tosh, Legalize It.

It’s called Bootleg Culture. The theme Bootleg Culture celebrates worldwide underground culture in fashion and a pirate radio mentality while questioning how older models of business try to “own intellectual property” on the internet. To drive home the point, the record comes with an instruction manual of “How to Bootleg my album”. The music was produced by Grammy Award winning Che Vicious (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) and is a mix up of hiphop, dancehall and pop. I’m excited for the track I have with RZA on the record – he’s my hero.

Lunden De’LeonBorn in Barbados, while in high school, Lunden found a fry

flipping job at Burger King and when the time was right, she hitched a ride to Hollywood with only $200 in her pocket. Fans recall first being introduced to Lunden as Joanne Mbutu on the hit television series Vital Signs. Years later, she catapulted that breakout role into a successful career with quite an impressive track-record by creating a number of unforgettable performances and starring in over fifty movies and television shows like the 20th Century Fox Movie The Ladies Room, Surviving Paradise, Fury, Faux-Pas, Cryptz, the HBO award-winning film Kickin Chicken and the NBC hit comedy “Just Shoot Me.”Lunden was soon voted by The Ave Magazine as “One of the Most Significant Women in Entertainment” alongside Halle Berry, Beyonce, Oprah Winfrey and many more. In fall 2003, Lunden opened the doors to her Los Angeles based record label Dirrty Records making headlines around the world for releasing a punk remake of Jimi Hendrix’s classic Purple Haze. Lunden was soon inducted into the Caribbean Hall of Fame alongside such legends as Bob Marley and Sidney Poitier. Known for her compassion, confidence and inspirational achievements, Former Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn issued a special proclamation declaring February 7th as “Lunden De’Leon Day” in the City of Los Angeles. Lunden recently ran for Councilwoman in her home state of South Carolina. Her film production company, Palmetto Film Studios, makes and distributes 5-7 films a year.

“My dad was the lead singer in a gospel band,” says Dirrty Records Founder/Filmmaker Lunden De’Leon. “The first time I saw him on stage I knew I wanted to be a part of the music industry.”

A Mogul’s not about making Forbes Most Powerful list or having a big bank account like Oprah or Jay-Z. It’s about being fierce and powerful in my own right.

Continuing to release indie movies as well as signing kick ass punk bands.

Shout out to the Afro Punk Community. Rock on!

They can expect to see it on August 11th.

Surround yourself with people who share your vision and passion.

To be honest, I’m not sure. I know my manager linked up with the Mayor’s office and it took off from there.

What defines you as a Mogul?

Where do you see your companies in the next 5 years?

Do you have any shout outs?

We understand you will be staring in the GMC movie

“Somebody’s Child” alongside Lynn Whitfield and Michael

In Los Angeles, February 7th is “Lunden De’Leon Day”

how did that come about?

You are CEO of Palmetto Film Studios, and Dirrty Re-

“ I moved my record company to South Carolina and started a film production company to give back to my community,” says Lunden.“ I’m blessed and believe in blessing others.”

E van Richardson, aka E.R., was born in Long Island to parents Coy and Patricia Richardson on November 30, 1979. He Graduated from Freeport High School, and then continued on to receive a degree from Nassau Community College. Ever committed to his musical passion, E.R. enrolled at Five Towns

College to study engineering and radio broadcasting before venturing off to host his own recording studio. Music has always been a staple in his life. His immediate surroundings reinforced this pursuit. One could say his talent has been ingrained in his DNA. His father, once signed as a song writer with Hollywood Records in the 1960’s, auditioned for Smokie Robinson and had close dealings with Lee Toeblen of that same recording label. E.R.’s older brother was equally as influencial in his development. His exposure and involvement with early Hip Hop left an indelible impression on E.R. Couple that with the steady thumping and vibration expelled from the speakers in his brother’s room and solidified was a strong sense of connection and reverance to music in him. Evan’s ear got accustom to hearing great artistry like Rakim,Nas,Ice Cube,De La Soul just to name a few. Between the two, his father/ brother, E.R. has been guided by an amazing combination of ground breaking Hip-Hop, the warm sounds of Blues, Funk and 1970’s Disco and Gospel that resonates in the music he produces today. In 2003 E.R.really started to attack the aspect of beat-making which, evolved in to engineering. With full respect of the music making process, E.R. also plays the guitar and the drums and has worked with artists such as G-Dep, Shea Davis, Rich Dolarz and MeccaGodzilla. Established in 2008, RichSonz Incorporated has served as an outlet for many who may not have otherwise had such accessibility to equipment and production services. OGM Exclusive with

RICHSONZINC.

Richsonz Incorporated was established as a recording studio in 2008. The studio facility provided music production and vocal recording services to independent artists throughout the Tri-State area. Richsonz Inc. expanded a year later in order to cater to major record labels while

simultaneously introducing RichSonz Music as it primary Label/Publishing company.

Being a mogul you must be able to control and assist others around you not only do I produce and engineer but operating a Publishing Company (RichSonz Inc.) which consist of 10 or more individuals (artist, producers and engineers and songwriters) takes an individual who is willing to put others in place before themselves if necessary for a greater cause.

What defines you as a mogul ?

In 2008 I started to do engineering work in a studio in Midtown Manhattan. I met a lot of people some in the industry like Dj premier, Allure, G –Dep, Hell Rell, and some people who weren’t in the industry so to speak but were behind the scenes in the industry.

In five years I see myself with one of the top ten indie publishing companies around the world, creating top notch music production, great hip hop, and r&b records.

I would like to shout out the whole Richsonz team, ovaground mogul magazine and also shout out to DJ Twin ½ of the Legendary Disco Twins a great mentor for me in the industry .

In the studio we have MCPc’s, Turntables, Fantom Keyboard, Lot records, couple sound modules and a couple more key ingredients

The way I approach producing and engineering is a feeling and a sense of being, which in turn inspires others due to the feeling they are receiving from a beat I made or a song I mixed. Actions speaks louder then words and if the art gives you a feeling it will inspire you in one way or another.

How did you get into the music industry?

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Do you have anyone you would like to shout out?

What are some of the equipment that you use at

Richsonz studio?

How do you inspire others to follow in your footsteps as

a producer / engineer?

*RichSonz music consists of Hip Hop and R&B artists as well as 10 music producers

*RichSonz continues to provide consistent and quality musical production and songwriting

me nervous (haha). I have Ailurophilia, which is an abnormal fondness of cats. I just love cats; more than people, they’re awesome creatures dammit.
