Bring your folding chairs, a picnic blanket, your entire family, and your appetites! This will be a unique experience for adults and children, as there are activities planned for the younger ones. You won’t want to miss it. Meet the Bands – ► “Relic Bluegrass” is a Louisville-based band with a sound often summed up by the title track of their debut album, “Livin’ in the Past.” With their songwriting and multi-genre fusion, Relic Bluegrass is part of a revival of this platform, blending rich vocal harmonies with colorful instrumentation. ► “The Hog Operation” ensemble is steeped in Kentucky’s rich music tradition. The group gives high-energy performances created by the cross- pollination of many American roots music styles including blues, bluegrass, Celtic, country and rock. FROM THE ANCHORAGE FORESTRY BOARD The triple-digit heat wave continues, and residents with trees planted during the past few years are reminded to keep their young trees well watered. These trees haven’t had enough time to establish a solid root system that can withstand drought and excessive heat. That means you need to insure that they receive at least one inch of water per week – either from Mother Nature or from you. A new shipment of Tree Gators ® has just arrived to assist with keeping your trees well hydrated this summer. They are available At City Hall for $20. The Fall Canopy Tree Campaign order forms will be included in the August issue of the Anchor Age. Trees must be planted no closer than 15 feet from the edge of the road, and no further away than 25 feet to qualify for the reduced-price program. Now’s a great time to evaluate your landscape to check the health of aging trees that may need to be removed in the next few years. You can plan for the future by planting new trees now to ensure a continued canopy.

ONE LOT, ONE RESIDENCECity Hall sometimes gets questions about renting or leasing cottages or apartments on residential property. Here’s some information you might find helpful:

The Jefferson County Zoning District Regulations specify certain residential-property classifications for single-family dwellings, and other classifications for multi-family dwellings. All of Anchorage’s residential-zoned properties are for single-family residential use except for Elm Cottage condominiums. Single-family means only one residence per residential lot. Guest cottages, apartments, or other structures are not permitted for residential and/or rental use if they are on the same lot as the main residence.

E.P. “TOM” SAWYER STATE PARK – TRIATHLON XXXI The park is holding its 31st annual triathlon on Saturday, August 4, 2012. Approximately 325 participants are expected.

The bike route will follow Lakeland Road to Garr Avenue, south on Evergreen Road, east on Osage Road, east on Lucas Lane, left on Old LaGrange Road to Chamberlain Lane, then turn around and come back. Caution: This means cyclists will be traveling in both directions on the same roads. Anchorage streets will remain open to traffic during the race which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. and end by 11:00 a.m. Residents are asked to watch for cyclists and graciously share the roadways to prevent accidents or injuries.

BACK TO SCHOOL August 16th marks the first day of classes for Anchorage Public School children. Crossing guards will aid children crossing Highway 146 at Bellwood Road and the railroad crossing and at the crosswalk on Evergreen from Station Road to Osage Road. Please remind children who walk or bike to and from school to be alert and safe; watch for cars and stay on pedestrian walkways where available. And drivers, keep an eye out for children on bicycles and on foot. Let’s make this transition back to school a safe time for our children.
