FROM PASTOR DAVE What Kind of Leadership is Needed for Your Church? “Choose those among you who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom…” (Acts 6:3) This year as we look for the next pastor for this church, and recruit eight new elders to join the Session, we would do well to consider the criteria used by the early Church: “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” How does that translate into our church in this day? “Full of the Holy Spirit” is not about being super-religious, Biblically knowledgeable, nor other-worldly. Rather, “full of the Holy Spirit” means having a heart that wants nothing more than to do God’s will. It has been said that God is looking not so much for those with ability, as for those with availability. Being available for God to use us, guide us, change our course, change our opinions, scramble our plans if need bethis is “full of the Holy Spirit.” Being “Biblically knowledgeable” is certainly a pre-requisite for our next pastor; yet it is the heart and will to put it into action that sparks the Holy Spirit’s work. Becoming more “Biblically knowledgeable” is an important growth curve for any elder, but not a pre-requisite. The calling to be an elder requires devoting oneself to that growth curve, so that she/he can be better tuned in to the Spirit of Jesus in leading the Church. “Full of wisdom” (Acts 6:3) is the human gift of a listening ear, a teachable spirit, common sense, and good judgment. Whereas the Holy Spirit is God’s gift to all believers, “wisdom” is a special gift for leaders. (See Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 12:7-11.) As you pray for your Pastor Nominating Committee, ask that each would have discernment to identify those pastors who are “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” As the Session appoints the 2013 Elder Nominating Committee in August, pray that the elders who will be chosen would be men and women “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” Then, working together, Pastor and Elders, of this beloved congregation will grow and thrive as a joyful expression of Christ alive in Clarksville. --Pastor Dave Handley See page 3 for a listing of Sermon Plans for the Summer July 2012 CONTACTING AND/OR MEETING WITH PASTOR DAVE [email protected] cell: 847-477-6990 Office hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-6:00 pm or Saturdays when circumstances require it.

FROM PASTOR DAVE

What Kind of Leadership is Needed for Your Church? “Choose those among you who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom…” (Acts 6:3)

This year as we look for the next pastor for this church, and recruit eight new elders to join the Session, we would do well to consider the criteria used by the early Church: “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” How does that translate into our church in this day?

“Full of the Holy Spirit” is not about being super-religious, Biblically knowledgeable, nor other-worldly. Rather, “full of the Holy Spirit” means having a heart that wants nothing more than to do God’s will. It has been said that God is looking not so much for those with ability, as for those with availability. Being available for God to use us, guide us, change our course, change our opinions, scramble our plans if need be—this is “full of the Holy Spirit.”

Being “Biblically knowledgeable” is certainly a pre-requisite for our next pastor; yet it is the heart and will to put it into action that sparks the Holy Spirit’s work.

(See Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 12:7-11.)

As you pray for your Pastor Nominating Committee, ask that each would have discernment to identify those pastors who are “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” As the Session appoints the 2013 Elder Nominating Committee in August, pray that the elders who will be chosen would be men and women “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” Then, working together, Pastor and Elders, of this beloved congregation will grow and thrive as a joyful expression of Christ alive in Clarksville. --Pastor Dave Handley

MEMORIAL GATHERING FOR LOUISE SNIDER

On Sunday, July 22, bring your coffee and coffee cake over to the 3rd Street corner of the fellowship

hall at 10:15 am. Chairs will be set up for an informal gathering to honor the memory of Louise

Snider, who passed away in Florida on June 16. Pastor Dave will offer some scripture and prayer, and

members are invited to share brief remembrances of their friendship with Louise and her

involvements with our church family. Daughter Pam Patrick sends her blessing and gratitude for this

gathering, where her mother's memory will be cherished.

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION

FPC offers a weekday Preschool Program for children ages 1 to 5. Preschool hours are from 9:00 am

to 12:00 noon. The pre-K class (older 4-year-olds and younger 5-year-olds) meets daily. Other classes

are either Mon./Wed./Fri. or Tues./Thurs. On Wed.’s and Thurs.’s we offer extended hours from

noon to 2:30 pm and the children bring their own lunch and stay and play. These hours are optional

and an additional fee is charged. The children enrolled in our program enjoy a wide variety of

experiences which include weekly music classes, daily art activities, books, field trips and an

introduction to colors, shapes, numbers and letters. Our goal is to provide a loving and caring

environment for the children. We believe very strongly that children learn by doing and we provide

many opportunities for them to learn at their developmental level.

For more information, an application, or to arrange a visit to the Preschool, please contact Mary Linn

Sadler, the preschool director at 645-0313.

THE PRESCHOOL OPEN HOUSE...

on Sunday, August 26 from 2-3:00 pm for those parents and children who have enrolled.

PRESCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT

First Presbyterian Church Preschool has again earned the 3 Star Quality rating for the 10th

consecutive year. Each spring the preschool must meet the requirements for licensing by the State of

Tennessee Department of Human Services. Seven areas of achievement must be met, including an

on-site classroom assessment of our program. Due to the outstanding work and dedication of the

staff, our preschool was able to achieve the highest rating possible. We appreciate the support of the

Preschool Board and this congregation for making it possible to offer an excellent program for the

families of this community. Congratulations to member and director, Mary Linn Sadler, and her great

team of teachers!

PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Your PNC has been working very faithfully to find the right pastor for our church. As of June 27th, eighty two pastors have submitted their PIF (pastor information form) for consideration as our pastor. Several people have asked if we have “closed the application process.” Our answer is no, because we are reviewing each PIF that is submitted. Out of that number, 9 of the PIFs were chosen for an initial interview. During the week of June 24 we have narrowed down to 3 pastors that we completed second interviews and checking references on. Technology is our friend to allow us to hear sermons at our convenience, and see the pastors during the interviews. We are very excited about the candidates that we have narrowed it down to at this time and expect to be doing some face to face discussions in the near future with some of them. This is a good time to remind you that we can not have a pastor come here and do a practice sermon as an interview. Although I agree that it might seem like a good idea; the Presbytery does not allow that. Dave reminds me that it is normal for a PNC team to go through peaks of excitement and think they are close, and then things sometimes fall apart when you believe you have a candidate. So we are cautiously optimistic and want to proceed methodically and with ears and hearts listening for God’s guidance. The PNC prayer team has been faithful as well. On Tuesday mornings at 9:30 they have prayed for this process as well as for our church. All members of First Presbyterian are invited to join the prayer team on any Tuesday. Even if you can not be in the building on Tuesday mornings, please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts and actions, and to be with the candidates as well. In closing I want to formally thank the PNC. They have been so committed to this process. Everyone has read all submitted information, listened to sermons, participated in many long interviews and meetings, and completed thorough evaluations on the candidates. They have united to form a strong team; and our mantra is “together as one for one”. Please contact any of us with any questions or concerns at any time! Sincerely Diane Miner Chairperson, PNC

THE F.U.E.L. MINISTRY is a food subsidization program for children whose only food source may be what

they receive at school. Our Presbyterian Women purchase specific foods that are then bundled, taken to a local

school, and then placed in each child’s backpack on Fridays. The bundles have foods which a child can easily

prepare over the weekend. Anyone in the church who may be interested in helping with this ministry is invited

to make monetary donations. Checks should be made to FPC PW with FUEL written on the memo line.

THEOLOGY ON TAP is a group of 10-15 people who meet at 5:30 pm on Mondays for conversation

about theology and real life. Each week discuss a particular topic or question. It is not a Bible study, though we often reference Scripture in addition to a host of other theologians. There are rarely any answers. It is a rich (and often challenging) discussion for participants. Everyone is welcome; no experience required. See Pastor Dave if you have any questions...or, join us one week at the Guadalajara Grill, 1068 South Riverside Drive (across from Big Lots)!

YOGA

Yoga classes are held in the fellowship hall every Tuesday evening from 5:30-7:00 pm. We encourage you to

Thank You, Room in the Inn Volunteers!

ROOM IN THE INN — IT TAKES A CHURCH!

From November to March, First Presbyterian joins 25 other Clarksville churches to house the homeless every

winter’s night. Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday (10 times) we provide transport, a great supper, comfortable and

warm bedding in the AOC and a “killer” breakfast at Frank’s Hamburgers. Even more than food and comfort,

we try to provide a peaceful, spirit filled, and safe environment.

A lot of folks are needed to assist with transport, cleaning, cooking, serving, chaperoning, and providing some

finances.

Craig Schryver has adjusted his holiday schedule for years to allow time to transport our friends from The Old

Firehouse on Golf Club Lane to the AOC.

Likewise, Hunter Burney, has provided the service of his Riverside Laundry where his manager, Mary, has

surely organized the cleaning of one thousand pounds of blankets, sheet, and pillow cases –all gratis!

Upon Susan Turner’s passing, Kitty Boaz immediately took on the mission of managing Room in the Inn.

Without Kitty, Room in the Inn would have been discontinued, so three cheers for Ms. Kitty for saving the

program!!

Likewise, if Tom Presler had not volunteered in 2011 to coordinate all the volunteers, life would have been

difficult for our guests. Tom will continue in 2012, but Kitty deserves a break and so this is your opportunity to

serve on one of our church’s most vital outreach programs. Please consider and give Bill Hutton a call at

648-1119.
