He has titled his presentation “Searching for Value in a World Where They Ask for Nothing” as a way to express that many bond holders today are experiencing “negative real yields.” He will walk us through a case study or two to give his pre- sentation details some real-life applications and to provide a glimpse into how a bond manager evaluates credit. Carney is the portfolio manager of the Weitz Nebraska Tax-Free Income Fund, Short-Intermediate Income Fund and Gov- ernment Money Market Fund. He began his investment career in 1982 at Chiles, Heider & Co., Inc. In 1986, he became a municipal securities professional with Smith Barney. Four years later, he com- pleted his BS in finance at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He joined Weitz Funds in 1995. In fact, some 37,000 people descended upon downtown Omaha on Monday, June 25 as the two events began just 15 minutes apart. Earlier this year, Omaha hosted first round games of the NCAA men’s college basket- ball tournament. That’s three major sporting events for our community in one calendar year! It got me thinking, “What is the eco- nomic impact of these three events on Omaha’s local economy?” It just so happens that FPA of Nebraska members may find out at our next mem- bership meeting on July 27. Dr. Ernie Goss, professor of economics at Creighton Uni- versity, will be providing a program for our membership at that meeting. Dr. Goss will be giving an economic up- date for us on a national level as well as a local economic update. I’m not sure if Dr. Goss plans to address these three events in his presentation, but I plan on asking him his views on what impact they have on our local economy. Plus, we will have interesting and timely programs from representatives of Weitz Funds and Morningstar, Inc. It certainly has been a good year for Omaha sports enthusiasts. How good of a year has it been economically? Hopefully we’ll learn more on that from Dr. Goss on July 27. I hope you will join us for what is sure to be one of our best meetings of the year!

Due to the recent financial crisis, many Americans are con-tinuing to suffer from a loss of financial resources, uncertaintyand a diminished quality of life. In these difficult times, manyare searching for emotional and financial advice to help themplan for their futures and achieve financial stability.

Toward that end, The Financial Planning Association®(FPA®), Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.(CFP Board), Foundation for Financial Planning and The U.S.Conference of Mayors are again partnering to assist those mostin need of financial guidance through a ground-breaking pro-gram called Financial Planning Day. For the third year, Omahahas been invited to participate and FPA of Nebraska has beenasked to organize volunteers to either speak at the event or meetindividually with attendees.

All materials will be provided by FPA, so no extensive prepara-tion is required. Volunteers must either be a member of FPA or aCFP Certificant.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. Mark thisdate on your calendar and watch for more information comingsoon about how you can volunteer to help with this importantinitiative.

Enter the 2012 FPA of NE Financial Planning ChallengeA new tradition is starting with our chap-

ter this year — the Financial PlanningChallenge!
