The Knight ly NewsJim LariaFrom the Desk of the Grand Knight
Worthy Brothers All,As we begin another fraternal year,
let me start with thanking you for the trust placed in me to lead the finest Council with whom I have been associated. It is an honor and privilege to serve.
As we begin this year by establishing the Council goals of membership and programming, let us be grateful that our predecessors have provided us a rock solid foundation from which to continue building the Body of Christ through our Council.
Let me quote from a Resolution for Membership Growth adopted by the 1 2 1 s t S u p r e m e C o n v e n t i o n i n Washington, D.C.:
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Knights of Columbus to fulfill Father Michael J McGivney’s vision to extend to each and every eligible Catholic man an invitation to become a member of this great Order; and
WHEREAS, membership in the Order symbolizes an individual’s commitment to his faith as a practicing Catholic, his profound love for his country and his steadfast dedication to serving his community (emphasis added); and
WHEREAS, Membership growth is crucial to both the vitality of the Order’s ability to carry out the many magnificent activities, programs and services it provides for its members, its church, and society; and
WHEREAS, the members of this 121ST Supreme Council have become determined to dedicate themselves to strengthening and increasing the Order’s
member sh ip so that o ther s can experience, first hand, the allegiance of fraternalism and the fulfillment from charitable service;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that it is the responsibility of each and every Brother Knight to work toward fulfilling Father McGivney’s v i s i o n by m a k i n g c o u n c i l a n d membership growth a leading priority: …”
Thus Worthy Brothers, quality membership growth will continue to be a first priority of this Council. For with membership growth comes expansion of programs to provide charity and service to our Church and Community. As Grand Knight, it is the strictest obligation that the membership, insurance, and programming growth of the Council and the involvement of all its members is ensured. This I pledge to you!

Worthy Officers and Brother Knights All:
Happy Independence Day! The birthday of our country is certainly a landmark event on our calendar. I hope this day finds you all happy and healthy as well as grateful for all that we have as Americans. It also comes at a time where we are painfully responsible of our obligations as Catholic Americans to defend the rights of Freedom of Religion in the face of obvious persecutions by our government. It is a task for all of us, both Brother Knights and lay Catholics, to band together to fight against legislation that will force our brothers and sisters in faith to violate their Catholic beliefs. Do not stand for this! Do whatever you can to stand up for our Mother Church!
Congratulations to our Council for earning DOUBLE STAR status for the 2011-12 fraternal year! This is a seriously amazing accomplishment and could not have been done without help from every man. I am sure our outgoing Grand Knight, Pete Capece, has acknowledged people in his report that he felt were responsible so forgive me for not doing so here, however, none of this would be possible without his leadership and perseverance. For those of you who don't know Pete, you will not find a finer man or Knight than he. His dedication to everything that the Order stands for and his diligence to see this through to the end is one of the main reasons we have earned this prestigious award. So, Worthy Grand Knight, congratulations to you, sir. I am sure it is the crowning achievement in your administration and thank you for a fine job these past two years.
A new fraternal year dawns and that means it is time for dues notices to go out. This year dues continue to be $33.00 (this includes $30 in Council dues and $3 in mandatory assessments from Supreme). We are also strongly encouraging each Brother Knight to make a minimum of $6 donation to the RSVP – Vocations Fund. Last year, our Council was ranked #6 in the state in our division for vocations donations and this year, I would like to be in the top 3! Please feel free to donate more than the $6 shown on your dues notice if you can.
I would also like to welcome our incoming officers, especially our new Grand Knight, James Laria. Our Council has elected a fine slate of men who will work tirelessly for the Order and the Council. I look forward to serving with you all and anticipate continuing our growth and service to our community.
I hope that you all have a relaxing and enjoyable 4th of July holiday and I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting on July 12th. God bless you all and Vivat Jesus!

The added value of LTC insurance
As life expectancy increases, the number of
people in need of long-term care, in their homes
or outside facilities, has grown also. Since its
addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000,
long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the
Order with an excellent opportunity to further
serve Knights and their families. Since 2005, every
Knights of Columbus long-term care policy comes
with an added value.
That added value is in the form of a service
called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering
access to a network of long-term care providers at
discounted rates. The network covers: home
health care, personal emergency response
systems, adult day care, assisted living, skilled
nursing facilities and durable medical equipment.
Eligibility for participation in this program is
open to Knights of Columbus long-term care
insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent
children, parents and parents-in-law. All
providers are fully credentialed and meet state
licensing requirements.
If you are not currently an LTC policyholder, I
suggest that we schedule some time together so
that I can provide additional information on how
you can avail yourself of this significant, value-
added benefit.

Knights of Columbus Sets New
Records for Charitable GivingThe Knights of Columbus set new all-time records for
charitable donations and volunteer service hours in 2011, according to Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, who released the results of the Order's Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity in a presentation to state deputies June 10.
The results of the survey indicate that total charitable contributions reached more than $158 million — exceeding the previous year's total by approximately $3.4 million. Volunteer service hours to charitable causes grew to more than 70 million hours.
"When we talk about the power of one, the necessity of growing the Order, the importance of charity — this is the reality," Anderson said of the numbers.
At the grassroots level, Knights are involved in a large number of service projects that range from programs with well-known groups like Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics to smaller-scale initiatives that have a large impact on the community, like building wheelchair ramps, organizing blood drives and collecting food for the needy. Among the largest contributions was $515,000 for the Order's Coats for Kids initiative and $1,593,000 from the Supreme Council and $5,950,073 from state and local units to support those studying for the priesthood and religious life.
"I don't think there's any other Catholic volunteer association that is making this kind of a difference day in and day out in our communities and our parishes than the Knights of Columbus," Anderson added.
The supreme knight also extolled state deputies to continue building the Order by constantly recruiting new members. It is only through a dynamic and expanding membership that the Knights can continue to make such a definitive impact on society and as the strong right arm of the Church.
"I hope one of your priorities is to have more brother Knights go forward on the journey of knighthood," said the supreme knight. "If we make the Knights stronger, we make the Church stronger. If we make the Knights stronger, we make our communities and our countries stronger. That is our mission. And we are going to grow and accomplish that mission."
Over the past 10 years, Knights have contributed $1.4 billion and 653 million volunteer hours to charity.
Knights of Columbus Files Formal
Comment on HHS MandateSupreme Knight asks Administration to “chart another
course”The Knights of Columbus filed a formal comment with
the United States Department of Health and Human Services today, calling on the government to rethink the unpopular healthcare Mandate that seeks to force many Catholic employers to cover interventions that violate their faith without regard for the First Amendment’s guarantee of the free exercise of religion.
The letter, signed by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, urged “the Administration to rescind the Mandate altogether,” or at least “to expand the religious exemption so that it covers all objecting individuals and organizations from cooperating in actions that genuinely offend their religious beliefs and moral convictions.”
“To exempt only some institutions on the principle of respect for religious liberty, as the Government seems to contemplate, and to refuse to exempt individuals makes no sense. The right to the free exercise of religion enshrined in the First Amendment extends to the people,” the letter says.
In the letter, the Knights noted that the Mandate “requires private Catholic individuals and entities, including organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, to violate their most deeply held religious beliefs,” and that “it appears to do so in violation of federal law and the First Amendment of the Constitution.” The letter also pointed out that “it is improper to deny statutory and First Amendment rights to religious liberty in order to create an entitlement to sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception.”
The letter makes clear that “there is no reason why the Affordable Care Act should not conform to those protections that exist in other contexts throughout the law, both at the state and federal level, and have stood for decades.” In sum, the letter urges that “whatever the intent of the Mandate, and whatever form it takes, it should not compel religious individuals to pay for what they believe is morally wrong. It is time for this Administration to chart another course.”

Fortnight for Freedom
The U.S. bishops have called f o r “ A F o r t n i g h t f o r Freedom,” the two-week period from June 21 to July 4 to focus “all the energies the Catholic community can muster” for religious liberty.
In the Diocese of Orlando, Bishop John Noonan has asked all the faithful to participate in the celebration of Mass to pray for religious freedom.
