Vol.1 Issue 34 coba news July 2011
I have been the Secretary of COBA Australia for the
past nine years. During this period I have worked closely with our President Des Hickman and a
hard working General Committee. It has been a honor and privilege to have worked with them
over the years. We had our ups and downs during this time and at times we had to make some
hard and unpleasant decisions. But at the end of the day we accepted all decisions that were passed
in a true democratic and friendly manner. We are all passionate in being part of this great organisa-
tion, as our final goal is to provide proper education for less privileged AI children of Campion old
boys and teachers. Our scholarship program has been operational for the past eight years and we
have provided educational scholarships for 106 primary and secondary students and tertiary
scholarships to 11 students. We have also provided financial assistance for 78 ex students and
teachers in India.
This year I am 73 and even though I am enjoying my role as the secretary I will have to
step down in a couple of years: and so will Des, our President who has been in this role for many
years ans though dedicated to COBA; also feels it is time to step down. We both acknowledge it is
time for a change in the leadership of our association.
Last year there were three positions that were not filled in our General Committee and
this year that number could increase. I am appealing to all our members to consider joining our
General Committee in any position they wish to fill. Please contact Des or myself to discuss the
various positions that could be filled. I realise that most members have their jobs and family com-
mitments, but I am sure you can spare a few hours of your time for a great
cause.
Our General Committee consists of six Executive positions, upto nine Commit-
tee Members and up to seven Social Sub-Committee positions.
If we have our full compliment the work load will be shared evenly by all mem-
bers. We appeal to all our (young and not so young) members to take an active
part and join our General Committee.
From the Secretary
Editor’s note COBA has always been proud of our unique strength as a broad family. Like family, we
stand up for what we believe in and we support each other, bound by loyalty and commitment by
stepping out of the realm of normality. The challenge now is to keep it there. In a civilized society
like ours, it is intolerable to have so many go without and your continued support is always hum-
bling and inspiring.
Jesus said, just a little faith can do amazing things in your life and in the lives of those
around you, being full of faith is one thing; however, It‟s not just about saying you believe - its actu-
ally doing something to show how much you believe.
Most people don‟t share Christ with others or step out to pray for them because they are
afraid to be embarrassed, afraid to be rejected. However, if you want to see God move in the lives of the people around you, taking risks and stepping out of our comfort zone is the greatest chal-
lenge.
As I always say “if you see someone without a smile, give them
yours”
God bless you

Glimpses of our June Dance
The June Dance held on the 4th June 2011 was an outstanding success. The feedback
received from our members and patrons who attended this event, made it obvious that everyone had an enjoyable night. I
would like to thank the bands “NEXT GENERATION” and “CROSS ROADS” that provided us with fantastic music and
also Burrows (Indian Caterers) for the lovely food.
Our next major event is the much anticipated “ BLUE & WHITE DANCE ”. The big
bands for the night are the famous “Next Generation” and “Phoenix” . We look forward to your support and attendance.
Please get your tickets early to avoid missing out on this great event.

Beverley (Bubbles) Wright
I was born on the 25th July 1938 and am married to Avis (Harding) and we have 5 children Rowena, Fiona, Beverly, Corrine and
Savio. I started my education at the Railway School in Villupuram and Golden Rock and then onto Campion (batch of 1955).
I joined the railways in 1958 as a Train Examiner and served for 5 years on deputation in neutral control organisation in New Delhi.
I took a crash course / R.D.S.O Lucknow on counselling. Worked for 4 years as an Instructor (mechanical) Zonal Training School in Trichy
and then decided to retire in 1993 and now I mind my own business. I am also a member of the COBA (Aust) Scholarship Committee in
India.
Member Profiles : Althea Vanessa Sherwood
My father was Leslie Kevin Van Haltren and mother was Yvonne and I was born in November 1970. At the age of 16 I started
work at the Holy Cross Convent in Tuticorin, then onto Campion Higher Secondary School in Trichy, St Paul‟s School in Bangalore, then
onto Carmel Convent, Presentation Convent Coimbatore and back to Campion School in Trichy. I am married to Ashley Sherwood and have
a son Ricardo. My hobbies are teaching, singing, dancing, reading, cooking and drawing. I am also a member of the COBA (Aust) Scholarship
Committee in India.
Golden Moments : Alfred Jacobs (Class of ‘45)
A boarder 1938 to 1945: Here am I, an “OCTOGENARIAN” 83 years old and recalling the past ,after 73 years. Also keeping up with technology on the Computer and remembering starting with the “Black Slate” in the Quilon convent (old Travancore) 1933.
Although 65 years have elapsed since passing out from Campion the memories of Fr. Fleming are stored in the memory bank. In the 1960`s my brother Victor (1941 Campion Batch) & I with our wives were watching the movie “The Sound of Music” in Calcutta, the scene Capt Von Trapp blows the whistle & the kids line up, Victor remarked “that’s Fr Fleming blowing the whistle” to line up the “Boarders” !!!
Since the 1950’s many memories of Fr Fleming have been published, however, I must add what a Trichy resident coined…… Fr Flem-ing had the countenance of a “roaring Lion” and the HEART of a lamb.
Algebra, Geometry & Trigonometry in my time earned the reputation… “NO Failures” in these 3 subjects for the final “High School Exam” thanks to the Maths Master Fr Fleming, there were none. Now to deviate to Fr Hession the English Scholar Six & half decades after passing out from Campion, can still recall a “Sunday Mass Sermon” preached by Fr. Hession CHS the Campion motto. Fr Hession turned it around to “Character, Holiness, sportsmanship” how appropriate to instil such values in the students.
Now as grandparents, we are grateful to all the gallant “Jesuits”…left their homeland to survive in Trichy in my time prior to 1945. No air conditioning, refrigeration etc. only basic Sanitation. The tough upbringing of us students has indeed stood us in good stead. Keds (sand shoes) Trichy Bata was retailing it for 15 Annas., however 99.9% of us boarders played hockey/soccer bare feet on gravel fields. Every Campion boarder played hockey, soccer & was introduced to “swimming” from an early age.
Now that I have settled in Sydney/Australia when I see the “swimming pools around” with the pumps, filters, etc and the blue gleaming water, I recall our Campion Pool green right through the year with “ALGAE” !!! That “Trichy Salt Water” immuned our system and we are still around!!! I must make reference to “Who looked after our health” the French Fr Leroyer, the “INFIRMARY” had a shelf with only “3 items”, Epsom Salt, Iodine,& an Acid (cannot recall the type of acid). No mixtures, no pills, Aspro, Anacin, etc: unheard off !!
A fever was fixed with a “schooner of Epsom Salt “. A cold or cough your chest was painted with Iodine. In Trichy “Scorpions” were galore & we boys were always bare feet. For a Scorpion sting…the French remedy was…acid poured over the sting !! You screamed but it worked !! In my 8 years in Campion with the rudimentary medication…Believe it or not …….”NOT A SINGLE BOY…….DIED”!!!
We had fractures, any amount of injuries playing hockey/Soccer bare footed, we just got on with it without medication, Physio Therapists, etc, no compo & Medicare.
Thanks to Fr Fleming for turning out those “Tough Bunch of Kids”. From 1938…we are still “Mucking Around”!!
