growing henry County’s Tv/Film resume Could Mean big business
Henry County has jumped into the fi lm and television pro-duction game and hit the ground running. Since being designated a “Camera Ready” community in March, Henry County’s Camera Ready contact, Laura Luker has re-ceived numerous calls and emails from location specialists and rep-resentatives with the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Offi ce seeking locations for televi-sion and fi lm productions. In June, the hit AMC televi-sion series “The Walking Dead” utilized a portion of Georgia Highway 20 in Hampton for sev-eral days. To the casual passer-by it appeared that a terrible accident had taken place, but what residents were really seeing was economic development in action! Henry County was previ-ously featured in fi lms such as “Glory,” “Smokey and the Ban-dit,” and most recently “Zom-bieland,” which opened No. 1 at the box offi ce. The economic im-pact of these and other fi lm and television productions cannot be understated. Since it was created in 2005, the Georgia Entertain-ment Industry Investment Act has helped generate unprecedented direct investment in Georgia. In fact, economic impact from pro-ductions in Georgia amounted to more than $1.4 billion – up from
$240 million just three years ear-lier. Today, Georgia is one of the top fi ve production destinations in the country. As many communities have also experienced, fi lms and televi-sion programs can drive increased tourism inspired by the success of local production. For example, the church built as a set for the Disney project “The Last Song” is now an event facility on Tybee Island and the Whistle Stop Café from “Fried Green Tomatoes” put Juliette, Georgia on the map. “We are excited about earning the Camera Ready designation and the potential impact it could have on our community,” said Kay Pippin, HCCC President. “With our mix of charming downtowns, elegant subdivisions, rural farmland and available warehouse space, Henry County has an incredible array of locations to offer the fi lm produc-tion industry, not to mention all the businesses available to provide local goods and services during fi lming.” The HCCC/CVB is actively seeking potential fi lming lo-cations for upcoming TV and fi lm projects. Citizens who own homes, property or buildings in Henry County and business own-ers who are interested in working with the TV/Film industry should contact Laura Luker at [email protected].

Henry County Offers Summer Fun for the Whole Family

While most of us live in and around Henry County, many have never been to Atlanta Motor Speedway to smell the rubber, hear the roar of over 40 super charged motors and watch the cars zip around the fastest track on the NASCAR circuit. The Thursday Thunder Summer Racing Series at AMS offers the perfect chance to watch future NASCAR stars at this family-oriented racing event for just $6. For $5 you can also take a track tour that includes a peek into NASCAR control, pit row and two laps around the track! If you are looking for a relaxing way to spend a Saturday evening, check out the City of Stockbridge “Sounds of Summer” series featuring live music on the City Hall lawn. Throughout
the summer Stockbridge is also inviting families to sit under the stars and enjoy a movie during Stars Over Stockbridge – Moonlight Movie Series. Little girls who dream of being a ballerina can have that dream come true during the Atlanta Festival Ballet’s “Ballerina Princess Day Camp” for ages 3 – 6 or the “Sugar and Spice Day Camp” for ages 6-9. Music, dance, art and karate classes are available throughout the summer for children seeking new skills and a chance to exert some energy. Trips to the World of Coke, a tour of Chick-Fil-A, swimming trips and much more are offered as part of the Henry County Parks and Recreation Summer Camp for children and teens. Henry County offers spectacular options for the 4th of July. Atlanta Motor Speedway will host a
fi reworks display on July 1 as part of Friday Night Drags and Henry County Fireworks Extravaganza will be held July 3 & 4 at Nash Farm Battlefi eld with fi reworks presentations both nights. Spend a fun Fourth in Hampton before traveling to Panola Mountain Park and climbing to the top for an amazing panoramic view of all of the Atlanta Area fi reworks shows. Tour one of Henry County’s best-kept secrets,
Noah’s Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center, which offers visitors miles of nature trails and a chance to see over 1,000 animals. Don’t miss the center’s famous Club House Crew, a lion, tiger and bear family that has been featured on such programs as National Geographic’s “Unusual Animal Friends.” Organize a picnic or a pick-up game of softball at one of Henry County’s 23 parks. Enjoy walking trails and playgrounds throughout the county or the 18-Hole Disc Golf Course at J.P. Moseley Park. For the more adventurous sports lovers, check out the outdoor skate boarding area at Bobby McBrayer Park or the BMX track at Sandy Ridge Park. Plan a team-building trip to Windy Hill Park where groups can maneuver the obstacle course or take aim at the paint ball complex. Explore nature on you own or join park staff for nature programs such as their “Tree Top Excursions,” fly-fishing classes and guided hikes at Panola Mountain State Park. Take a walk back through time at Heritage Park in McDonough, home to a historic village, the Veteran’s Wall of Honor and the Historical Veterans Museum which showcases uniforms and other military items from World War I to present. To continue the history lesson, visit Nash Farm Battlefi eld, the site of the largest cavalry raid in Georgia. Kids will love the Nash Farm Battlefi eld
Museum where they can try on period clothing from the Civil War era. Searching for something to do during a summer storm? Fun Town/Fun Bowl in McDonough offers a variety of activities including bowling, go-karts mini-golf, arcades and billiards. The Starlite Skating Center and Pin Strikes Entertainment Center in Stockbridge also
offer other fun options for kids and groups! This is only a sampling of what Henry County has to offer kids and families this summer. Canongate Golf Club offered 9 holes of golf to Chamber members for only $15 prior to the start of the May 26 Business After Hours reception. Canongate also provided, as a door prize, a free foursome valued at $220, won by Rita Green. Attendees were treated to delicious hors ‘douevres and beverages from the Club as guests mingled and enjoyed the scenic golf course.

Friday night drags and Show-n-Shineatlanta Motor Speedway Competing on Friday nights from April through August, local competitors power up for weekly drag racing among 18 thrilling divisions. Each night features street cars, full-blown dragsters, diesel trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and more racing on the Speedway’s pit road eighth-mile drag strip. In addition, each night includes the MCR Safety Show-N-Shine car show, promotional events, fan interaction and special features. Admission costs just $8. Water awards Mean We’re all WinnersHenry County Water & Sewerage Authority received not just one, but two highly regarded awards for excellence at the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) Spring Conference in Macon. The Tussahaw Water Treatment Plant was recognized as the state’s 2011 Water Plant of the Year and the Indian Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant and Land
Application System was selected as the 2011 Wastewater Treatment Plan of the Year in Georgia. It was noted that it’s diffi cult for a water utility to win even one plant of the year award, let alone two.

henry County roadway improvements on horizonprojects List Taking Shape for the 2012 referendum on a Metro atlanta regional Transportation SpLoST
On June 1, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Planning Director, Todd Long, transmitted an “unconstrained list” of priority transportation projects to the Atlanta Region Transportation Roundtable (Roundtable), to be considered for inclusion in a set of projects that voters will decide whether to fund through a 10-year, penny sales tax referendum in July 2012. The broad list of transportation projects on the unconstrained list was developed from projects identified by local governments, transit agencies and other organizations throughout the 10- county Atlanta region, with additional input from GDOT. The total cost of all projects on the unconstrained list would be $22.9 billion. Now, in accord with the Transportation Investment Act (created by HB 277), the Roundtable, composed of local officials, will narrow the list of projects to a financially “constrained list” that can be accomplished with the revenue generated by the sales tax, estimated to generate approximately $8 billion. Winnowing the unconstrained list down to fit within the anticipated T-SPLOST revenue is even more daunting when considering inflation must also be considered. In other words, $8 billion at the end of 10 years would most likely be closer to $5 or $6 billion in actual dollars. A five member Executive Committee of the Roundtable will recommend a financially constrained draft list to the full 21 member Roundtable by August 15. The Roundtable has until October 15, 2011 to adopt the final financially constrained projects list. A referendum will be held throughout the metro Atlanta region on July 31, 2012, when voters will decide whether to add a 1% sales tax to fund the specific projects adopted by the Roundtable. Some 445 projects throughout the 10 county Atlanta area made it to the unconstrained list that the Roundtable will winnow down to a financially feasible list. The final, or constrained, list of projects that will go before voters will likely include:• Road improvements and safety projects• Additional transit options (transit projects could include commuter rail)• Maintenance and improvement
of existing facilities, as well as new projects• Projects that will benefit the entire region, as well as local, improvements that help individual communities. Henry County had at least 16 transportation projects included in the fiscally unconstrained list, which are all roadway projects. The total approximate cost to construct all Henry County projects exceeds $470 million. Additional region-wide funding in excess of $500 million for Xpress Bus services, regional van pools and a call center for older adults and disabled citizens, all of which would have an impact on Henry County residents, are included on the list submitted by GDOT Planning Director Todd Long and are not included in the $470 million of Henry County transportation projects. Also included in the unconstrained list is funding for
an Atlanta to Griffin commuter rail at a cost of $463 million which includes 20 years of operations and maintenance and does not reflect federal matching funds. The unconstrained list also includes $50 million assigned to a Multi- Modal Passenger Terminal in downtown Atlanta. In the next four months, the Roundtable will conduct the largest public outreach effort ever undertaken in the Atlanta region. To kick it off, more than one million households throughout the region were invited to participate in “telephone town hall” meetings in June. In these county by county town hall meetings, participants had the chance to make suggestions and ask questions of their two local Roundtable representatives, their county commission chair and a mayor from their county regarding priority transportation needs. There will be many other

On July 4, we shoot fireworks, attend picnics, watch parades and otherwise celebrate our nation’s independence and the many freedoms we enjoy. But as you go through life, you’ll find out how important it is to work towards another type of freedom — financial freedom. That’s why you need to put strategies in place to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day.
And there’s no way to “sugar-coat” this task, because it will be challenging. In recent years, a combination of factors
— including depressed housing prices, rising health care costs, frozen or eliminated pension plans and the financial market plunge of 2008 and early 2009 — has made it more difficult for many of us to accumulate the resources we’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle we’ve envisioned. In fact, the average American family faces a 37 percent shortfall in the income they will need in retirement, according to a recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
But now that we’ve
gotten the “bad” stuff out of the way, let’s turn to the good news: You can do a great deal to work towards financial freedom during your retirement years. Here are some suggestions that can help:
• Save and invest more. Obviously, the younger you are, the greater the benefit you’ll get by increasing your savings and investments. But whatever your age, you’ll find that it pays to save and invest more. During difficult economic times, of course, it’s not always easy to boost your savings and
investments, but try to find ways that are as “automatic” as possible. For example, whenever you get a raise, increase your 401(k) contributions, which come directly from your paycheck. And whenever you get a “windfall,” such as a tax refund, try to use part of it for your IRA or another investment account.
• Rebalance your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to periodically rebalance your investments to make sure they are still aligned with your goals and risk tolerance. But it’s especially important to rebalance as you get older and you near retirement. At this stage, you’ll want to decrease the volatility in
your portfolio and lock in what gains you’ve achieved, so you may want to move some (but certainly not all) of your more aggressive investments into less volatile ones.
• Cut down on debts. It’s easier said than done, but anything you can do to reduce your debt load will free up money to invest for your retirement. Work diligently to pay off whatever debts you can and examine your lifestyle to find areas in which you can reduce spending.
• Consider working part-time during retirement. Many Americans are now living longer and enjoying happy, healthy retirements. In fact, the
concept of “retirement” has changed so that it now includes any number of activities — including part-time work in a completely different area from one’s previous career. If you are willing to do even a little part-time work during your retirement years, you can greatly reduce the financial pressures you may face during this time of your life.
