The summer break is here! Whether you are enjoying the holidays here or abroad, I hope you

all have exciting family time planned. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Year 6 pupils the very best for their new Secondary School and say how exceptionally proud we all are of their achievements. Although tears may be shed, as we say farewell to pupils and families, I hope you will look back on your time at Rhodes with fondness. I hope you will always keep a special place in your heart for school memories, teachers and friends. Rhodes Avenue will always be here for you. We also say farewell to some members of staff, Kate G and Emma. Your dedication has been greatly appreciated; you will be greatly missed.

Welcome back Mr Claridge! It has been wonderful seeing Shane back at work this half term, Sports Day wouldn’t be Sports Day without Shane’s voice being heard over the boom box. I know Shane wouldn’t mind me saying that he has been overwhelmed by your support and well wishes. You really are a very special, caring community – thank you. I would like to wish you all a marvelous summer break and we look forward to seeing you all safe and sound in the Autumn term; 5th September 2018.

I would like to thank all of the amazing staff at Rhodes Avenue. They are all dedicated, talented

individuals, who want nothing but the very best for your children and for you as a family. The administration team are the face of the school and ensure the smooth running of daily life. The site team ensure the school is a place where everybody wants to come to, we spend so many hours at school and it is great to have facilities that we are proud of. I would like to thank our extended teams who support your family life by providing care before and after school. The kitchen and lunch staff who always go over and beyond to meet the children’s needs. The learning support team work tirelessly to ensure the pupils they support, within class or one to one, have everything they need to facilitate learning within the classroom. Finally thank you to all the teachers: they care for your children daily, they support their social and emotional

development, as well as their academic progress; they come into school early and leave late to ensure your children get the very best education. Thank you to the whole Rhodes Avenue team. Adrian Hall

for Kick for Cancer. We would like to

thank all parents for your incredible

generosity – this is the most we have

ever raised as a school.

We have now donated well over

£12,000 for this charity.

A special assembly will be held in

the new academic year, by CLIC

Sargent (Children with Cancer), to

share with the children the total raised and how it was used.

The Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association is running a competition for children aged 12

and under during the Summer Holidays (Saturday 21st July 2018 – Friday 31st August 2018).

It is free to take part, with prizes to be won – The Everyman Cinema has kindly donated

cinema tickets to award to 40 lucky winners.

The idea of the competition is to find one strange object in the windows of participating

shops in Muswell Hill — something they wouldn’t usually sell. For example: a tin of beans in a

toy shop or a spanner in a bookshop. Shops will display our “Odd One Out” sign in their

window, so you know they are taking part.

Forms will be available to download from the MHGGA website at www.mhfga.org, or you

can collect one from Muswell Hill Library from July 21st.

Supporting local community events, working together.

Exploring texture

We explored different textures by making

rubbings in the playground and used them

with colourful inks to create imaginative

landscapes. We looked at the art of Max Ernst

to inspire us and learned about foreground,

middle ground, background and the horizon

line.

This work will be displayed when we return

after the summer break.

Making a difference

I was diagnosed with Crohn's earlier this year. I went through a lot of pain and

many hospital visits. For 8 weeks I was not allowed to eat or drink any food and

had a tube in my nose. I decided to turn it into a positive experience by raising

money for Crohn's and Colitis charities. This helped distract me and the support

encouraged me when I was feeling sad. My friends helped raise money and we

had a huge community bootcamp in the park. We raised £4100.

I am now feeling much better. Thank you so much to all my teachers and friends

who helped me get through this difficult time. This experience taught me never to

stare at people or treat them differently.

Rhodes Avenue PS Arsenal Double Club 2017 - 2018

When I went to the Emirates Stadium, my favourite part was the tour and the

amazing view from the Director box and playing football in the Arsenal Hub.

Thank you very much for a lovely day at Arsenal. I really enjoyed seeing all the

players’ shirts in the changing room; seeing the newly grown pitch and playing

football in the hub. Thomas

Learning about Local History

As part of their local history topic, Memories of Muswell Hill’, Year 3 have enjoyed

a series of exciting workshops at Alexandra Palace. Ranging from what happened

there during the First World War to the very first BBC broadcasts, the children

have learnt lots of interesting facts about the palace.

‘My favourite thing was cracking the codes to get clues for the history quizzes we

did at the palace. I also liked having a go at looking through a replica of the very

first TV camera- everything was upside down!’ (Carys, 3SW)

Working together

The children in Year 6 have raised a phenomenal amount of money, through their

fiver challenge, for charity. Well done to all mini businesses and parents for

supporting. A total of £660.28 was raised and has been donated to the Kick it

Charity.

A note about music

On Monday 25th June, the Junior Choir, Boyband,

Chamber Choir and Staff Choir performed brilliantly

in the Summer Concert accompanied by the fantastic

Philhanthropic Philharmonic. A huge thank you to

Dan Shafran for his wonderful arrangements.

On Sunday 1st July, the Chamber Choir

performed in Carmina Burana with the

Crouch End Festival Chorus at the Queen

Elizabeth Hall. All the adults in the choir

were bowled over by how professional

our pupils were and how beautifully they

sang. Thank you to Alison Davies, Wendy

Armah and Dexter Bush for supporting on this trip.

A lasting memory

The 2018 Year 6 cohort have created their lasting art memory; a sculpted willow

piece. The children worked with Tim, a local artist, to create the masterpiece.

This living sculpture will enable children to play and have fun with their art.

What better lasting memory – art for fun, to make people smile, play and laugh.

RAPSA

Thank you if you came along to the Summer Funday this year, it was another huge

success with the sun shining and the Pimms flowing all day long. Thank you also to

everyone who came along to work at the event whether it be to set up, man the stalls or

clear up afterwards, we literally couldn’t do it without such a dedicated group of parents.

Funds are still being totted up but it looks to be another roaring success for RAPSA with

the silent auction alone raising over a thousand pounds.

We have raised £959 so far by people using easyfundraising - but we’d love to hit a grand

before the end of term. This is the easiest and cheapest way for you to donate to the

school since you don’t actually have to give the school a penny of your own money. Just

go online shopping via the easyfundraising page and the retailers will donate a percentage

of what you spend to the school - here’s the

Speaking of money, RAPSA has a number of treasury related roles to fill. Don’t worry, you

don’t need to have any financial or accounting skills, just the desire to help out once in a

Finally we’d like to say a huge thank you and goodbye to the very lovely Sheena Patel who

is stepping down from RAPSA after a jaw dropping 15 years. She’s been treasurer for the

last 9 years but has finally decided to hang up her cheque book and we’re all wondering

what we’re going to do without her. We will miss you Sheena!

Story telling in the Forest

The Woodpecker children enjoyed acting out the story “We’re going on a Bear

Hunt” to their parents and carers in a special end of term celebration. It felt very

magical watching them bring the story to life in the forest, shaded from the sun

under the trees. We were very proud of how happy and confident they all were in

front of an audience.

The children also went on their own bear hunt and we finished the morning with a

teddy bear picnic.

We would like to say a big thank you to Oliver’s parents who played for us. We

have been very lucky to have two musicians playing for us at special events this

year. We would like to say another Thank you to Gregory’s mother who has been

our ‘star baker’ this year, and finally thank you to all the parents and carers who

came and joined us in the forest.

Whole class music has been launched

You may have heard our Year 5 Samba

groups playing on Monday as they paraded around the school. This year we trialled whole

class specialist music lessons with great success.

Moving into the new year children in Years 1 and 2 will be taught the recorder, Years 3 and

4 the ukulele, Year 5 Samba drumming and in Year 6 children write and compose their

own songs.

Changes happen all around us.

The Hedgehog children have been

exploring changes this term. They

have grown their very own bean

stalks and climbed into the sky.

They have watched caterpillar’s grow

and created their own caterpillar art

work. We hoped you enjoyed the

magical assembly yesterday and

enjoyed listen to our songs and

stories. We are all proud of your

learning, well done Hedgehog’s.
