Just a Mouse-Click AwayBY REVEREND HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE

VOLUME 52 NUMBER 7

This month finds us gliding into

summer! Not only do we have

the Bay District Jr. YBA retreat in San

Luis Obispo over July 4 weekend, but

also the Buddhist Church of Oakland

Picnic on Sunday, July 19. Another

important aspect of summer is that we

do not have Dharma School – only

Shotsuki and the Obon Service.

However, you can still hear me, even

if you can’t attend service. The inter-

net has really changed the availability

of the teachings of the Buddha – you

can find all kinds of information (and

p robably some misinform a t i o n ) .

There are even some blogs about Jodo

Shinshu, but many of them are by

people who are not associated with

BCA or Nishi Hongwanji – not neces-

sarily a bad thing in itself, but would-

n’t it be nice if maybe there were a blog

or something out there by someone

involved with BCA? Well, there is! I

just happen to have a blog called “The

Nenju” where I occasionally post on

Buddhist topics. Unfortunately, one of

my problems is that I have a very dif-

ficult time writing (I’ve already had

two false starts for this article!), so I

don’t update very often.

But when I do, I am usually pointing

to a podcast that I do with a friend of

mine, Dr. Scott Mitchell of the

Institute of Buddhist Studies. A pod-

cast is kind of like a radio show, except

it’s on the internet. Ours is called “The

DharmaRealm.” We put new episodes

up on the first and third Fridays

(though we take winter and summer

break off). The podcast came about

one day when we were sitting in (Dr.)

Scott’s office at IBS. We were talking

about interdependence, referring to

classes that we took when we were at

IBS. Afterwards I realized, we should

record these conversations and make

them available to people somehow. I

realized that with my experience

recording my music and Scott’s web

savvy, we should be able to put some-

thing together. We chose some topics,

I came up with a theme song, and

away we went! The entire archive is

available at the website and also at the

Apple iTunes Store. Here are the

addresses of my blog and podcast:

ucts, like cardboard, are recycled, theyare mixed with water and turned intoa slurry. Since we all know water andoil don’t mix, the issue is clear.

Grease from pizza boxes causes oilto form at the top of the slurry, andpaper fibers cannot separate from oilsduring the pulping pro c e s s .E s s e n t i a l l y, this contaminant causesthe entire batch to be ruined. This isthe reason that other food re l a t e ditems are non-recyclable (used paperplates, used napkins, used paper towels, etc).

“The oil gets in when you’re doingyour process of making paper,” saidTerry Gellenbeck, a solid waste admin-istrative analyst for the City ofPhoenix. “The oil causes great prob-lems for the quality of the paper, espe-cially the binding of the fibers. It putsin contaminants, so when they dosqueeze the water out, it has spots and holes.”

But what about other things regular-ly found on paper products, like ink?“Most inks are not petroleum-based sothey break down fast. Food is a bigproblem,” he said.

Also, be mindful of adhesives thatmay be on the pizza box (coupons, stickers, etc.) as those are contami-nants. Known as “pressure sensitiveadhesives (PSAs)” these can ruin therecycling process just as much as oil orfood remains.Sneaks

Many people admit trying to “sneak”their pizza boxes in with cardboardboxes and such. In reality, this doesmore harm than good as the contami-nated cardboard could ruin the wholerecycling batch.

In fact, contamination in the recy-cling business is a big problem. Some

The Pizza Box Mystery, an articleby Lori Brown from Earth 911.

Many people assume that pizzaboxes are recyclable. In fact, mostboxes have recycling symbols on themand are traditionally made from corru-gated cardboard. They are, in and ofthemselves, recyclable.

However, what makes parts of themnon-recyclable is the hot, tasty treatthat comes inside them, specifically, the grease and cheese from pizza thatsoil the cardboard.

So there you have it, pizza boxesthat are tarnished with food, or anypaper product that is stained withgrease or food, are not recyclable -unless you remove the tainted por-tions.

But why is this? And what are theimplications for the general, pizza-lov-ing public? Mmm, pizza. How it Gets Recycled

Food is one of the worst contami-nants in the paper recycling process.Grease and oil are not as big of a prob-lem for plastic, metal and glass, asthose materials are recycled using aheat process. But when paper prod-

estimates put the costs of irresponsiblecontamination in the neighborhood of$700 million per year industry-wide.Gellenbeck estimates that for the Cityof Phoenix, contamination costs themaround $1 million annually, because ofdamage to machinery, disposal costsfor the non-recyclable material andwasted time, materials and efficiency. With the City processing 129,000 tonsof materials in 2008 (around 7 percentof this is cardboard), money is animportant factor as to why residentsshould know what their municipalitiesdo and do not accept. So, What Do I Do?

The easiest remedy for this problemis to cut or tear out the soiled portionsof your pizza boxes and trash them. For example, you can tear the top ofthe box off, recycle that and throwaway the bottom part containing thegrease. If the entire box is grease-free,the whole box can be recycled with aguilt-free conscience.

Another option to recycling card-board is to compost it, although thegrease rule still applies here as well.“Even with oils, you shouldn’t com-post [greased cardboard]. It causes rot-ting, you get more bugs and smell andit’s just not good for the plants,” saidGellenbeck.

Most importantly, being well-versedon what your local recyclers accept, can make the biggest difference. “It alldepends on where your pro c e s s o rsends your paper, too,” saidGellenbeck, whose authority appliesonly to the City of Phoenix. “If you cankeep a particular thing like the foodout, the plastics out, all those thingsthat really shouldn’t be there, it would help.”

ReflectionsBY REV. SEIGEN YAMAOKA

The year 2009 is now at the halfway point. The question is,

“What have we accomplished?” Reflection: It is easy to think about

what we have accomplished, but thereal question that we must all workwith is, “what do we need to do toaccomplish anything?” Take care .Gassho,
