From
Fr. Ryan
Do you ever wonder why we do what we do in the celebration of Holy Mass? The kids at St. Philip took a look at the meaning behind the rituals during their online Vacation Bible School this past week. I think everyone - myself included - should go through something similar. For example, do you know what vestments the priest wears at Mass and why he wears them?
The amice is usually unseen. It is a linen cloth the priest ties around his neck. Ancient Jewish priests wore this garment to keep the vestments from becoming soaked with sweat. Over the amice, the priest wears an alb. This is a white, body-length robe worn by ancient Christians to signify having "washed their robes in the Blood of [Jesus]" (see Revelation 22:14) and achieved redemption. The priest next puts on a cincture or a rope around his waist. This signifies that his chastity is meant to set him apart for the exclusive service of God.
Sometimes, the priest will put a maniple over his left wrist. This small garment was worn by ancient slaves as a way to wipe their faces while working. It is meant to remind the priest that his work is meant to be difficult and dirty. Next, he puts a stole around his neck to signify the authority to distribute the sacraments that God has given him. Finally, he puts on a large robe called a chasuble. It symbolizes the love of God that covers all things. Though he be a man of authority (the stole), he is meant to exercise it with great love (the chasuble). FR. RYAN
