HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

BAA/OLA KICK-OFFDear Our Lady of Perpetual Help family,

As we all know, 2020 has been quite the unexpected year. Although we have been physically separated for much of the spring, our church is still alive and still on mission. Because we are Catholic we still realize the Joy that is present in the world brought through Living the Gospel.

One of the ways we participate in that mission is through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The impact and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has created extraordinary circumstances for our parish and our regional church, the Diocese of Columbus. Your participation is critical!

The overall goal for the Diocese this year is $6.85 million and our parish share of the Appeal is $148,468. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back tax free to us and go towards the Our Lady Appeal. This year’s Our Lady Appeal will focus on replacing some of our HVAC units for the church building—one unit costs about $82,000. Any additional funds are planned to go toward audio-visual equipment, which will help us adapt to some of the more permanent effects of the Coronavirus outbreak and reach our parishioners in new, exciting ways.

Due to the COVID-19 and recent suspension of public Masses, the Appeal was moved from May and will begin the weekend of July 11-12. I know there are many obligations and concerns facing each of you and your families, but please consider supporting the ministries and programs made possible through the generosity of the people of faith. Be assured of my gratitude for your gift – whatever the amount - and of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones! We have two simple ways for you to donate:

• Go online to columbuscatholicgiving.org to make a secure pledge and/or gift.

• Extra pledge envelopes will be available to pick up at OLPH.

Let us pray for the success of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. I am confident that together, with everyone’s participation, our parish will exceed our goal. I thank you for the generosity that you have shown in the past as I pray for our parish family.

MASS INTENTIONSDuring the outdoor Mass in the Grass, Father Dan shared that God has interrupted our lives in unexpected ways. For most of us, the canceling of public Mass was an unwelcome jolt. We attend Mass to pray for one another as well as for loved ones that have gone before us. One way to pray for a loved one is to have a Mass offered in memory of them.

Due to the pandemic shutdown earlier this year, dozens of Mass intentions were put on hold. Like you, the church office anxiously waited for Mass to resume. When the time came to open up, the diocese advised us to resume Masses but with a new, reduced Mass schedule. Our new schedule requires a longer break between Masses to allow for sanitizing the church. The new schedule also removes a Mass each weekend.

This created two challenges for the church office. We had to reschedule each Mass intention that was canceled during the shutdown. We also needed to reschedule upcoming Mass intentions impacted by the postponement of the 9:30 Mass. We were able to reschedule each preexisting intention to a remaining, available Mass during 2020.

Numerous weekend Mass intentions could not be rescheduled on an upcoming weekend. Canon Law mandates that we provide a Mass intention within one year of the request. Our Lady of Perpetual Help is an active parish with Mass intentions typically booked out several months in advance. This makes rescheduling dozens of Masses a complicated task. We have done our best to reschedule each Mass intention while honoring Canon Law that guides us. We know that some of you will not be able to attend a Mass offered for a loved one because of a new date and time. We sympathize with you and we apologize for the inconvenience.

There are many uncertainties as we move forward. Will there be another shutdown in the fall as the next flu season commences? When will a new pastor be assigned to our parish? Will a new pastor change our Mass schedule? If so, how many Masses will be offered at Our Lady and what will those Mass times be?

Because of so many uncertainties regarding our Mass schedule, the church office is not accepting new requests for Mass intentions at this time. Our parish already has a Mass intention associated with each of the remaining Masses during 2020. Thank you for your dedication and support of our parish. Please continue to keep our parish in your prayers. The church office appreciates your patience as we navigate this ongoing interruption together.

READING II Romans 8:26-27

Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

GOSPELMatthew 13:24-43

Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’”

He spoke to them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.

Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

READING IWisdom 12:13, 16-19

There is no god besides you who have the care of all, that you need show you have not unjustly condemned. For your might is the source of justice; your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all. For you show your might when the perfection of your power is disbelieved; and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity. But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us; for power, whenever you will, attends you. And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins.

RESPONSORIAL PSALMPsalm 86:5-6, 9-10, 15-16

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving. You, O LORD, are good and forgiving, abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.Hearken, O LORD, to my prayerand attend to the sound of my pleading.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving. All the nations you have made shall comeand worship you, O LORD,and glorify your name. For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds;you alone are God.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving. You, O LORD, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity.Turn toward me, and have pity on me;give your strength to your servant.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

OVER 1500 TREES TO BE PLANTED IN HONOR OF FR. DAN - THANK YOUThe Creation Care Council wishes to thank all who donated dollars to plant trees in gratitude for the good things Father Dan did for our parish. Over one thousand five hundred trees will help to heal the earth and honor best memories while helping to heal others. Teamtrees.org planted over 22 million trees in the past year and hopes to plant over 20 million trees throughout 19 different countries in the coming year.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE FOOD DRIVEEvery July, our parish conducts a food drive for the Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG) food pantry. This year, due to the pandemic, we will not be collecting food items. Instead, we want to help OLG with financial donations. With the help of Catholic Social Services, the OLG food pantry has been transformed into a full community center. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Center (OLGC) is dedicated to reducing poverty within the immigrant Hispanic community on the west side of Columbus. This community is growing and experiences disproportionate poverty. The OLGC helps address the root causes of this poverty by offering services including the food pantry, English as a Second Language classes, nutrition classes, preventative health screenings and illegal and immigration consultations and referrals. If you can help this worthy cause, please consider a financial donation. Make your check payable to OLPH with a notation on the memo line for Our Lady of Guadalupe. You can mail your donation to the parish office or drop it in the collection basket at Mass.

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION OPENOur Lady of Perpetual Help Preschool is a Christ centered, play-based and 5-star Step up to Quality rated Preschool. Many of our teaching staff are trained catechists for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and our students participate in CGS weekly. We implement the Creative Curriculum, which is aligned with the Ohio Department of Education preschool standards. We strive to provide a quality program that invites each child to learn through play. Contact Amanda Athey, [email protected], to schedule a tour or for registration information or visit our website for online registration ourladygc.org/preschool.
