Hello everybody. I hope yall doing good and finding a wayto keep cool. Its sure been hot working down along the

beaches too. I see so many folks out there trying to keepenough sunscreen on, yet they still look crispy red. Check the level of Phyou are using and maybe go one set larger than that. Im just talking from experience, not

as much fun when you get too much sun.You know what? Id like to talk with you for a moment. Every time, it comes time for

me to sit and think for a bit about what Id like to say or share something with you. Eachone of you that I meet become a face in my mind that I mentally see when I go to write. Ido that on most all my writings. Anyways, wouldnt you like to ask me my opinion on asubject or maybe ask me or the Mayor a question or two? I hope my writings do get youto think and want to ask about this or that. Maybe want to go to the computer and seewhat our Web guy Lee has found for stories. Hes always into something that stretchesthe imagination. Thats why I like it.

But there are a lot more to this newspaper than just this printed edition in your hand.Yes, we are online, have a website with additional news and stories. And we are also onFaceBook. Just request to friend us and you can see what Lee is up to.

I know we all have an opinion about Obama. Trust me, it has been really hard not to gobroke by adding 10 pages more just to keep up with all of his scandals and lies and withsuch a lack of, I dont care about our country. This country is coming soon to experi-ence deadly problems that we never had like before. I do realize after several years thatwhen I continued to turn the extra income into more pages, our costs increased to al-most $1,000/wk (just for the print). Trust me, I understand now many things about this

business that I didnt think of when it started. I do want to see this grow in numbers againsomeday and we will add more pages as more businesses join us with advertising. That ishow we pay for the print and other expenses needed to maintain this, going on 6yrs now.I been at this now for awhile, lets keep it going! By Advertising here with us.

Getting back to my thought. I am not wanting to cause you fear nor scare you as a

reader unnecessarily, ever. Top thing is to see whats going on within our city and localareas around Freeport, DFS and parts of S. Walton side. If it may pertain to me and youas citizens, I feel a need to let you know of it. Good or bad. I tell it as it is.

With the way the rest of the media is lately. They sure do not ask questions or investi-gate like Fox news and a couple others. Remember when there was only 4 channels?Think how easy it was then to control what you know about the government? When Isearch for the latest overseas disasters, half of the videos that were there are now impossi-

ble to view for the govt. made them pull it down, I guess? Someone did. Look howquickly Benghazi got all twisted around from a video we didnt even start or know of, to,oh come on that was how long ago? All still without a single answer.

Ok, the IRS scandal. How many of us are supposed to be so ignorant to think that LoisLerner didnt politically go after a certain party. But get this, first they say we will turnover all her E-mails for the investigation. Oh, wait some of the main time frame we re-quested has been deleted or lost? Really? How many of you believe that for 1 second? So,lets get on with the investigation they say. Oh, wait again another problem with produc-ing now any of her E-mails, any at all. Why did you once say under oath you have themthen now you dont? Isnt that perjury too? I tell you I could go on and on but if you are a

person that thinks the government is looking out for our best interest? Think again.I have recently been in contact with numerous people and organizations with concerns

of what can I do to help stop the disease ridden criminals (illegal aliens) from crossingour borders. Nothing, Im permitted to do. Id love to hear from anyone who can say thatour leader of this USA is doing his job? To protect the viable interest of the safety of ourcountrys citizens?

His recent actions of being seen in Colorado, playing pool and having a beer. When hewas only 40 min. from the Texas border earlier and at least could have seen with his owneyes what he is doing. But he did nothing, he says nothing of substance anymore. I feelthat since he cant be re-elected, he just open the flood gates of hell. Made deals (shakinghands) with evil minded criminals from these third world countries and send a messagethat to hurry come to America, we wont make you leave?

What happened to our safety? Why couldnt he close the border tight? Make entrancesfor people to enter, once they have been finger printed, photod, examined for diseasesand searched. Vaccine them at least. Border patrol agents are catching diseases already. Then we can let them know how we live here in USA, and what is expected from them tocontribute to our society. The reasons our country was superb to all others.

But no Mr. president, you look the other way to us people who earned a way legally tobe here. You watch, millions will suffer across our land from these people. Why leaveopen unguarded borders when we have plenty of Veterans out of work who would

proudly defend our borders and rights as they would line up and wait to come in.People, this is not a game, its our future, our childrens futures. We can go along living

in paradise. But I ask you now. How will we prepare to defend from evil and disease? Here in Walton county, what measures are we taking to prepare? Tell me.

r -HOW??From the businesses advertising in this issue.

Thank each one as you go to their storeYes its true. The rising demand for this newspaper made our delivering needsso high, we could not keep up. We have numerous locations all throughout

Freeport, south Walton and DeFuniak Springs to pick up a copy. Interested inadvertising help? Just give us a call today!

    Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus;

I send you greetings of grace and peace

in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus.

I would like to place before you a blessing and achallenge. The blessing first.

I believe the God of all creation who has revealed Himself in the

living Jesus Christ wants Christians to be Christ like. We can work

together to conduct a Thanksgiving service of praise and Thanksgiving

in Freeport. We can even work with the City of Freeport and conduct

such a ceremony of praise and Thanksgiving unto God for His blessings

that we do not violate the rules of separation. Yet, because of what we

do and how we do it we minister not only the heart, but the hands, and

the words of God unto the people. Now for the challenge and there are

    two of them.

After the service of Thanksgiving we will provide a Thanksgiv-

ing meal for the members of our community who are struggling. The

individuals who have a brokenness that affects their heart, their well-

being, their home, and perhaps their family. You know someone, and I

know someone, you know someone who knows someone. Hurt and

brokenness takes us to a lot of different places. Some people come back

some are trying and need help. I believe that faith, family, friends, and

yes good food really does help.

The second challenge is a ministerial gathering or association. I

recognize that some of the Pastors of Freeport Churches work other jobs

and even live outside of Freeport. Therefore, scheduling times to meettogether and a place where we can all be together will require effort on

everyones part. I can only hope, pray, and rely on the Holy Spirit to

direct us in the correct path and guide us with the right heart.

I invite you to join the work. The Mayor and the City Council

have approved the idea. The plans need to be formulated, The menu

needs to be finalized, and the date needs to be chosen. A meeting is

scheduled on Thursday 24 July at 4pm at Freeport First Baptist.

You can let me know by calling 850-227-8627-the email is

[email protected]. We need at least one (1) representative

from each Church in Freeport, Portland and Black Creek.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope you

pray over the matter. I believe that the Light of Jesus Christ can shine in

Freeport and beat back the darkness. We can do this much better by

working together. Thank you again, blessings.

I still remember the 8-year-old girl who came to the emergency roomwith vomiting and drowsiness. Shed been complaining of headachesand abdominal pain for several weeks. The parents had brought her inthat night because now she was acting strangely, not being able to talk

    properly and acting very lethargic.

She was admitted to the hospital that night with vitamin A toxicity andliver failure due to excess vitamin A in her body. Her parents had been

giving her large doses of vitamin A supplements. As a pediatrician, I see many parents who give their children vitaminsupplements. Generally, this is okay, if the dosage is appropriate. It be-comes a serious issue, though, if the dosage is excessive. This is wherethe issue of our foods being fortified with vitamins raises eyebrows.Could the vitamins in foods combined with supplements overdose our

    children with too many vitamins?

Too much vitamin A can lead to bone abnormalities, brittle nails, peel-ing skin, hair loss, and in rare cases, liver failure. Excess zinc can causethe blood condition anemia and may suppress your immune system. So

what is a parent to do?

First of all, you should know that most kids will not have overdoses ofvitamins, especially if they eat a healthy diet based on the USDAshealthy plate guidelinesi.e., mostly fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains. The key is to be mindful of the ingredients that are in processedfoods and to balance that with the vitamin supplements that you maygive your children. Its obviously important for our children to get thevitamins but equally important for them not to overdose. So here are a

few tips that I use myself to walk that line:

    1. Pay attention to the label. Look at cereal labels carefully to see what

vitamins have been added. Maybe the day your child had afortified cereal or waffle, he doesnt need that gummy vitamin. Also, some cereals may not have vitamins addedthese tend to be

    the organic brands.

    2. Go back to basics: Serve simple, non-processed foods often. The

more real food that is on the table, the less added ingredientsthere are. Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables dont have addedvitamins. Theyre the best sources of the nutrients for your kids. Fill

those plates with veggies and fruits.

    3. Cook at home as much as possible. Dont groan our grandmoth-

ers advice does turn out to be true in this case. I cook a lot on aSundaythis way I have meals for a few days. Then, I cook onWednesday so we have meals for 2 more days. This is good for my

kids and my wallet.4. Be a role model. I only eat cereal once or twice a week; usually we

have smoothies, eggs, or on a Saturday, homemade pancakes.

And remember, be mindful about those vitamin supplements. Its okayto have them, but most pediatricians, including myself, will remind you

that the very best nutri-ents come from naturalsources. So feed yourkids a colorful plate with

    plenty of fruits, whole

grains, dairy, and vegeta-bles, and chances aretheyll get plenty of the

    vitamins that they need.

Healthmark achieves high marks in performanceBy Ron Kelley

Healthmark Regional Medical Center just received exemplary ratings for hospital performanceand patient satisfaction, according to Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providersand Systems (HCAHPS). Among all hospitals, as of March 2014, Healthmark Regional MedicalCenter (HRMC) in DeFuniak Springs received the second highest ranking in the state of Florida.

Nationwide, out of 3,974 hospitals, HRMC ranks No. 153.The HCAHPS survey is the national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients' per-

spectives of hospital care, in conjunction with the federal Department of Health and Human Ser-vices Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The survey is administered to a random sam-

ple of adult patients across medical conditions between 48 hours and six weeks after discharge.Healthmark CEO Dr. Jim Thompson congratulated staff, Just look at what you have accom-

plished. Youdid this and you have every right to be proud. This isnt just a homerun, this is agrand slam!

According to HCAHPS, the national average is 70 percent. The average for the top 10 percentof high-performing hospitals is 81 percent. Healthmark received a stunning 86 percent rating forhospital performance.

Chief Operations Officer Gerald Beard said, We were delighted to get this news and I am veryproud of our medical team of physicians and nurses. Every department, from lab and pharmacyto business and housekeeping, contributed to this high ranking. We could not be happier.

While Healthmark received extremely high ratings, Dr. Thompson noted that there are stillareas where improvements could be made. We are not at 100 percent yet, he said with a smile, but we are getting there.

Locally, the survey questions were administered by Healthmark Administrative Assistant MattDouglass. He explained that the survey asked patients if their physicians and nurses always com-

municated well, if they always received help when they wanted it, if staff always explained aboutmedicines before they were given and many other questions. Patients were also asked to rate thehospital on a scale of 1-10.

This demonstrates exactly what weve been telling people Healthmark deliverssome of the finest health care youll get anywhere, said Douglass.

Healthmark Director of Nurses Rebecca Scott, R.N., agreed. The numbers dont lie.To be ranked No. 2 in the state for patient satisfaction is very gratifying. Our staffworks very hard to do the best job they can every day and it is good to know that peoplerecognize it. Im just so proud of everyone here.

    BEL.

I am a 5-year-oldLabrador & Ameri-can Bulldog Mix. Iam honored to be thePet of the Week at Alaqua Animal Refuge thisweek. My story is not unlike the many other

pets being surrendered at a local kill shelters byfamilies. Even though my family surrenderedme, my luck changed when Alaqua brought meto their amazing facility. The people there made

me understand that my life mattered.

The kind humans here take such good care ofme and I have been eager to please them. Dogshave very forgiving hearts, which is why I holdno grudges. I hold no sadness about my pastand I have been so happy here. The staff atAlaqua saw that I was a smart girl and enrolledme in the Unconditional Love Program. I had aloving and caring handler who took care of mein the program. We bonded easily and he said Iwas a quick learner. I graduated with a degree

as a Canine Good Citizen.Upon returning to Alaqua, I have had a hard

time adjusting to being back in my kennel. Iloved and respected my handler, loved all thetime we got together, and I miss him so much. Iwas such a good girl at school and I thought myvery own family would adopt me once I gradu-ated, but I havent yet. My heart remains full ofhope for my future, The volunteers here arevery supportive of me. They provide me with alot of love. I am excellent on a leash and I fol-

low my commands, just as I was taught atschool. I always try to conduct myself as a well-mannered gentle lady. I am respectful of all,

but I think I would do best as an only pet. I getalong with the other dogs in the playgroundhere, but some of the pups distract me. I am

happiest getting tummy rubs and ear massages.

I am what the volunteers and staff call a "lowmaintenance" girl. My beautiful shiny coat is alovely combination of ebony and ivory. Cometo think of it, that sort of describes my person-ality. Just like the song by Sir Paul McCartney,

my coat reflects the keys of the piano, "Ebonyand Ivory, living side by side, in perfect har-

    mony". That is totally me!

I am a rule follower, a gentle soul, and wantnothing more than to share my life with my

    very own human family.

Healthmark Health MattersNo Rest For The Weary?

Anyone who has worked in a hospital, fire station or police stationhas probably done shift work. Too often, people are required to con-stantly rotate to different shifts, disrupting their sleep cycles and put-ting their health at risk. Although humans are naturally wired to beawake during the day and to sleep at night, good daytime sleep is pos-sible if you must work at night.

According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic, some of the best waysto promote better sleep during the day are to avoid stimulants, such ascaffeine and nicotine, before bedtime. For someone working nights

and who needs to sleep from morning until afternoon, try to avoidcaffeine after midnight.

At home, create a restful environment. To promote uninterruptedsleep, turn off or unplug the phone and hang room-darkening shadeson the windows. Turn down the thermostat, wear an eye mask and

post a "Do not disturb" sign on your bedroom doorand possiblythe front door as well. Schedule appointments and other activitiesaround your sleep period, and train family and friends to leave youalone while you sleep.

Stick to the routine. Going to sleep and waking up at the same timeevery day helps promote good sleep. Be as consistent as possible, even on weekends and days off.

Make healthy lifestyle choices. Eat a healthy diet and include physi-cal activity in your daily routine. If exercise seems to energize you,

plan to work out after you wake up rather than before you go to sleep.Resist the temptation to use junk food or nicotine to stay awake oralcohol to get to sleep.

If these tips don't seem to help, sometimes an underlying sleep dis-order or other issues need to be addressed. Consult Dr. Scott Haufe at

    Healthmark Walk-in Clinic at (850) 951-4556.

WC BCC Budget Workshop - Review of Budget

As reported by WZEP AM1460The proposed 2015 Walton County Budget was publicly presented for the first time Thursdaymorning. The Walton Commissioners held a budget workshop. Melissa Thomason, WaltonFinance Manager, said the budget being presented has a $10.9 million increase, but not a mil-lage increase. Staff had previously met with the commissioners to look at the individual de-

partments. A packet was presented and made available to the public, but the commissioners didnot go over each department. This is the budget for the commissioners. Some Constitutional

    officers are now self funded.

Thomason said they were careful to consider non-recurring income. She said this year thecounty is in a position to invest in items like ambulances and stormwater. The County also hasa line of credit that could be used if needed. She said the idea is to get ahead for the futureneeds. The County is also looking at a merit pay increase that could be combined with a cost ofliving (COLA). They have also included a prepayment on the bridge loan that will knock down

    the note considerably.

As the jail and animal control was transferred to the Sheriffs Office, the commissionersbudget shows a drop in employees, but overall this was a wash as the Sheriff picked them up.There are increases in some of the constitutional officers, but these are not funded through thecommissioners. Other changes are a drop in Administration by one employee or FTE, thechange of the attorney and staff from contracted to hired, and growth in recreation. The requestis to combine parks with maintenance. Thomason said the idea is to allow for a more efficient

use of the employees as the seasons change.

There is a 4.8% increase in health insurance and slight decrease in retirement. Last year there

was an unassigned fund balance of $9.8m and in this budget it will increase to around $10.2m.

Commissioner Sara Comander said she would rather have a cost of living raise than a meritraise because it would come earlier. She noted the cost of milk as an example of the increasedcosts to employees. Comander asked to give a larger COLA for some employees, using thosemaking $50,000 or less as a start. County Administrator Larry Jones said staff had been dis-cussing that and also feel it is the best way, that is to do the COLA. Commissioner CindyMeadows said she would like to look at pay numbers to determine what would be considered a

top tier. Comander agreed that the $50,000 is just a starting number for the discussion.

Comander also said, in a meeting with TDC Director Bagby, he talked about needing morecode enforcement officers as more regulations are passed. Bagby said they added one em-

ployee. An idea is to have Admin fund two code enforcement officers and the TDC would usethem and pay for half a year. This due to the TDC spending having to be used for tourism.Bagby said he could use 20 more code enforcement officers the week of the fourth, but two

might be too many in December.

The total budget is up from $121,807,607 last year to $134,556,805 proposed this year. After

interfund transfers the budget comes to $120.5 million this year over $109.6 last year.

If being 'on' on Monday is essential, consider hitting the gym to get your blood pumping, stopping for more cof-fee or both. If possible, delay bigger, better agenda items when the stars serve you some electric, inspiring stuff, give you natural allure and extra shine. What do you want now? Go for it! At the end of the workweek, it may

seem like a hassle, but confirm plans, do the math and so forth; otherwise things are liable to go awry.

If you feel funny asking, arrange for a mutually beneficial trade. Around Tuesday and Wednesday, fuse yourimagination and your intellectual side for amazing results. Some free-form thought might give rise to surprisingnext steps for your relationship, career or life at large. Be glad you're you on Thursday and Friday, and be ready

for additional appreciation from those around you, too.

Be careful about trampling on others to get there -- it's bad for your karma! Around Tuesday and Wednesday, you're more of an idea person rather than an action go-getter. Get in cahoots with someone who thinks like youdo for double the brainpower (and double the fun, too). Then after all that conscious thought, your subconscious

has a message for you at the end of the workweek. Write down those dreams and tune into those visions.

If you've been thinking about getting out of town, go ahead and firm up those plans on Monday when the starssmile on future journeys. Bring some unusual energy your way, perhaps in the form of a work or a personal chal-lenge. This could be a bend-or-break situation -- which will you do? After this, fun with friends (or a romantic

interest) is in order at the end of the workweek. Those who know and love you best energize you, and vice versa.

If you're confused or indecisive, don't expect a sudden flash of insight on Monday. Around Tuesday and

Wednesday, however, if you apply yourself, you're likely to experience the dawning of a useful point of view.To prompt it, consider the most outlandish of options and seek out advice from an odd source. An email, a text

or other communique could be misunderstood at the end of the workweek; beware of assumptions now.

Playing hooky or working from home might not be a bad idea on Monday because your regular routine may pre-sent some irregular issues now. Be sure to direct negative feelings appropriately. You don't want to end up tan-gling with your boss when your relationship's the source of your frustration -- or vice versa. But spread the good

stuff around. By the end of the workweek, the stars are sending plenty of mojo your way.

Wanna make a good impression on Monday? It's easy -- make it all about them. They'll think you're the cat'spajamas (accurately, of course). Somebody's quirks may make you crazy, but even you can admit you've got afew of your own. Try to loosen up or laugh it off. Your work or personal priorities require attention at the end of

the workweek. The most appealing possibilities may not ultimately satisfy you.On Monday, fit in some fun -- a little flirtation, a quick coffee with a friend, whatever it takes to kick the weekoff right. You have the tenacity to apply yourself to a task or situation, but then again, if you think more freelyfirst, an entirely new and improved approach may present itself. Don't overlook esoteric ideas. Try saying 'I hear

what you're saying' at the end of the workweek even if you're thinking 'You're a total wingnut.'

If you find yourself dragging a bit on Monday, consider why you're feeling this way. You'll want to have youremotional state sorted out by Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect some pretty spectacular energy from the stars, including a possible romantic interlude. Your knack for 'getting' others is hot now. Don't expect big results. You

might be disappointed at the end of the workweek, but smaller plans will go rather nicely.

You're a people person and super aware of opportunities on Monday, so seize this day big time! Around Tuesdayand Wednesday, family and/or household matters should be a priority. A little maintenance of your relationshipsand surroundings now prevents issues later. Then it's time to leave mundane stuff (mostly) behind and stretch

that imagination at the end of the workweek. Think big, think bold, think beautiful -- and think romance!

A penny saved is a penny you can spend on something bigger and better later on Monday. You have a bright, shiny quality that attracts others; your genuine interest in them keeps 'em around. Don't forget to share your latestodd fascination. At the end of the workweek, it's a good thing your head is securely attached. You're prone to lose

most everything else, including track of time at a crucial moment if you're not careful.

Hop out of bed early on Monday, and make the most of the limitless possibilities the stars are sending your way.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, you're busy refining a scheme or looking for an alternative approach to a certainsituation -- good ideas both. The imaginative oomph you need, however, might not arrive until the end of theworkweek. You're able to come up with all sorts of things now, especially in cahoots with someone super. Bal-

ance work or projects and play this weekend -- too much of one throws you off big time now.

Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers An-

    nounces Screening Partners for 2014-15

AtlantaSouth Arts has announced the 17 screening partners partici-pating in the 2014-2015 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmak-

ers. Southern Circuit, the nationals original regional tour of independ-ent films and filmmakers, coordinates multi-week tours for invited film-makers and their work. Filmmakers participate in community screeningsand audience engagement activities. This seasons screening partnersinclude organizations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisi-

ana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Southern Circuit was developed to connect audiences with new, inde-pendent films that they normally wouldnt have an opportunity to ex-perience, explained Teresa Hollingsworth, senior program director atSouth Arts. We send directors into communities for screenings andaudience discussions about their work and the filmmaking process. Itcreates a deeper, richer, and more engaging film experience for audi-

    ences and for the artists.

This seasons screening partners include 12 returning sites from last

season: here are the 2 closest. Check their website for more locations.

WC BCC Budget Workshop - Spending DiscussionAs reported by WZEP AM1460During the Walton Budget Workshop, Commissioner Meadows asked about garbage pickup. She mentioned recycling and shifting pickup on the south end. When asked if any changeswere included, county administrator Larry Jones said no; but they would like to look at recy-cling. She also asked about contingency funds that could be used. Staff said there is $400,000available. Meadows asked about the libraries, saying the current trend is ebooks. She asked to

bring them into all the libraries. Librarian Dan Owens has started this and there are ebooksavailable. The program has just started so there are not as many titles and the staff is learning

    the process.

Meadows asked about stormwater manage-ment and infrastructure. She asked if therewas anything in the budget to start thecounty on fixing some of the problems.Staff said they are researching fundingoptions and can use the line of credit if aneed arises. She asked if there is wisdom in

bumping up the millage .08 to raise anothermillion each year. She said by bumping itup a small amount each year during goodtimes, they could be ready for future prob-lems. With some areas already implement-ing stormwater taxes and the state talkingabout requirements, this would begin putting the item in the budget so not to hit residents atone time in the future. A $500,000 home would have $40 added to the tax bill. CommissionerBill Imfeld said there is a question of the needs and where they are. He said they need to iden-tify which watersheds are involved and then how to fix the problems. He said the first step is toget the money into engineering and look at starting to address the problem. Comander also

asked about beach accesses and where could that money come from.

There was only one person from the public besides this reporter and the reporter from the Her-ald/Breeze. A resident, Leigh Moore, said she doesnt think anyone is excited about moretaxes, but she would be happy to pay more if it is going back into infrastructure. She said thiswould help raise her property value and called it good for the visitors as well as the propertyowners. She told commissioners she lives in the Inlet Beach area and has watched infrastruc-ture needs change. She said one restaurant has increased traffic and there has been a pedestrianaccident as someone was going to the new restaurant. She said biking and walking have in-creased and this is good, but there needs to be infrastructure that promotes it and makes people

    feel and act safe.

The proposed millage, an amount that can be decreased but not increased, was set. Commis-sioner Imfeld suggested setting it .08 higher with the additional million being earmarked forinfrastructure. This would include stormwater as well as other needs. Commissioner Meadowsagreed, calling it a good future planning tool. Commissioner Bill Chapman said they knowthere are areas that have greater problems with stormwater drainage than others. He said, look-ing at the county as a whole, not all areas need the same stormwater infrastructure funding.Meadows said they need to consider the county as a whole and when one part is helped, all can

be helped. Imfeld said he would not agree with designating the additional infrastructure moneyfor stormwater only. He would like to have the fund as a rainy day fund for emergencies.Meadows said infrastructure is critical. She said the .08 mill gives them a starting point and

they will take public input and could go down if needed.

    Commissioners Attend LECOM

    Open House for New Dental

    School in Defuniak Springs

    Walton County Commissioner Kenneth

Pridgen and Chairman Bill Chapman at-tended an open house for the Lake ErieCollege of Osteopathic Medicines(LECOM) new dental school that will beopening in Defuniak Springs in spring of2015. During the event, the Commis-sioners had to opportunity to meet withFlorida Senator Durell Peaden and Dr.Robert Hirsch, the Dean of LECOMs

    School of Dental Medicine.

LECOM is a private college with its maincampus in Erie, PA, with an additional

location, LECOM at Seton Hill, in Greens-burg, PA; and LECOM Bradenton, abranch campus in Bradenton, Florida. LE-COM is currently in the process of reno-vating the former MicroSpine building justsouth of Interstate 10 off US Highway 331and converting it into a 30 office dentalschool that will be used to teach currentenrollees at LECOMs Bradenton Cam-

    pus.

The additional location will allow LE-

COM to offer their students early clinicalexperience in a community dental officesetting. This location is being renovated togive 50 senior year students the opportu-nity to receive a year of hands-on clinicaltraining. In addition to the 50 students, there will be additional faculty that will be

    working at the location.

This is a great project that LECOM isbringing to Walton County, said Prid-gen. This is a wonderful opportunity to

not only bring an institution of higherlearning to our area, but it also brings nu-

merous economic benefits to the County.

While the main campus for the dentalschool is housed in Bradenton, FL, there isan additional satellite office in Erie,PA. The office currently being built inDeFuniak Springs will serve as theschools second satellite location. TheCollege has built clinical group practices to

provide dental treatments for residents whoface challenges in obtaining needed dental

    care.
