Th e 2012 BC Summer Games
will descend on the city for four days this
month and leave behind
a strong economic and
sporting legacy
Surrey will be in the spotlight when the 2012 BC Summer Games – a celebration of youth and sport achievement – roll into town July 19-22.
It marks the fi rst time the City of Parks will hosted the province’s largest multi-sport event since 1989. Surrey will welcome 2,800 athletes, ages 11-18, who will be accompanied by 900 coaches and offi cials from around the province.
“Th e BC Games brings the best kids in these sports, puts them in competitive situation and guides them towards Canadian youth teams, and then Canadian junior teams and on to national competition,” says Tom Hastie, director of sport, 2012 BC Summer Games.
Paralympic and Special Olympic events are also integrated into the program.
“We are trying to make the BC Summer Games inclusive,” explains Hastie.
All told, there will be 20 sports to see: athletics, baseball, canoe/kayak, diving, equestrian, golf, inline hockey, lacrosse, rowing, rugby, sailing, soccer, soft ball, swimming, synchronized swimming, towed water sports, triathlon, volleyball, beach volleyball and wrestling.
Surrey will host the majority of these events at 12 venues in the city, while three neighbouring municipalities – Abbotsford, Langley and Delta – will pick up three outdoor water sporting contests.
Th e South Surrey Recreation Centre, Semiahmoo Secondary and the South Surrey Athletic Park will be a hub of activity during the Games, showcasing six events within a fi ve-to-10 minute walk of each other.
One of the venues, Surrey’s most famous public green space – Bear Creek Park – is
being signifi cantly upgraded for these Games and as a legacy for the community to enjoy.
Th e BC Summer Games will also gift the host city with an economic boost: Surrey’s hotels, restaurants and retail outlets will split an estimated $2.5 million in tourism revenue during the four-day event.
Th ere are 3,200 local volunteers – from BC Summer Games board directors to food organizers – who got this elaborate event off this ground and will ensure that it runs smoothly.
On Th ursday, July 19, the 2012 BC Summer Games will kick off with the opening ceremonies at Surrey’s Holland Park (Old Yale Road and King George Boulevard) from 7-8 pm.

by Maria Spitale-LeiskLocal business leaders agree the 2012 BC
Summer Games will showcase Surrey’s renaissance to the rest of the province.
Anita Huberman, Surrey Board of Trade CEO, says visitors can experience shopping – at the newly renovated Guilford Town Centre or outdoors at Grandview Corners – and a diverse dining scene in the city.
“I think fi rst of all with any games, especially the BC Summer Games, it’s really going to put Surrey on the map,” says Huberman.
About 4,000 visitors – including spectators, athletes, offi cials and coaches, as well as their families and friends – are expected
to fl ow into the city July 19-22.Th e economic impact on Surrey is expected to
be between $2.5 and $3 million, says Huberman, with people spending money on restaurants, shopping malls and transportation.
Th e Surrey Board of Trade is a big supporter of the Games, with some staff even signing up to volunteer, Huberman adds.
Ryan Matheson, director of sales and marketing for the Sheraton Vancouver Guilford Hotel – the offi cial accommodation of the 2012 BC Summer Games – welcomes the added boost to Surrey’s tourism sector.
“It’s going to be fantastic for the four days that [the athletes] are here to see the facilities that Surrey has to off er,” says Matheson.
He is expecting the hotel – which will be a hub of activity during the BC Summer Games – to be sold out that week.

by Maria Spitale-LeiskThese certainly aren’t the Hunger Games:
Athletes attending the 2012 BC Summer Games in Surrey will be well-nourished.
But it’s a huge feat, considering that 32,000 meals will be made over four days to fuel 2,000-plus teenagers.
At the helm of this culinary operation is Linda Creighton, director of food services for the 2012 Summer Games. It marks the second time she has been drafted by the BC Games Society for this role.
In 2010, Creighton pulled off what she refers to as the “Miracle on 56th Avenue” at the Summer Games in Langley.
When you factor in food allergies – gluten, dairy, nuts and shellfish, to name but four requests she has received – Creighton is jumping through hoops to please adolescent palates.
“It’s really just showing people that you don’t
have to compromise on flavour to make a healthy meal,” she says.
Lucky for athletes of these Games, Creighton comes with 25 years of food industry experience under her belt. She has also deputized executive chef Dwayne Botchar who “quarterbacks in the kitchen.”
A “MASH-style” makeshift kitchen will be set up at the back of the Cloverdale Arena. Two tents will house the food preparation area and the slick workhorses of the operation: three professional-grade convection ovens that will cook 280 turkey breast roasts in three hours.
“I would give up my car for one of these ovens,” laughs Creighton.
When it comes to sourcing the food – including 15,000 apples, 12,000 cartons of milk and 4,000 lbs. of deli meats – Creighton also has sustainability on the brain.
“We are definitely working towards being a

ENGAGINGCOMMUNITIES
SFU campuses redefine the heart of a communityUniversities were created to engage minds. At SFU we go further, engaging entire communities.
In a historic return to its athletic roots, SFU was approved as the first non-U.S. member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the world’s largest sports community. As a member of the NCAA, SFU athletes encounter a high level of competition and challenge, but as always has been the case, SFU’s primary concern is that its athletes succeed as students.

green Games,” she says. “A big part of the Games is our legacy.”
And that legacy includes donating any unused food to Surrey non-profi ts to distribute to those in need.
Creighton is just one of 550 local volunteers off ering to cook food, clean dishes, set up tables and basically make sure the athletes have enough to eat. Her reason to volunteer an immeasurable amount of hours ties back to sport and the BC Summer Games itself.
In 1985, Creighton played soft ball in the BC Summer Games in Nanaimo and recalls the impression it made on her.
“I remember how much fun it was, and meeting people from all over,” she says.
“l remember the food – and I remember medical services and how the volunteers looked aft er us.”

NEW RELEASE!Punjabi Names
& Their Meanings
by Maria Spitale-LeiskMany young athletes of BC Games
past have gone on to attain profes-sional sports careers and university scholarships.
In 2008, Cloverdale Minor Hockey product Tyler Wotherspoon and his Fraser Valley zone teammates took gold at the BC Winter Games in Cranbrook. Th at same year, a then-16-year-old Wotherspoon was draft ed by the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks.
It was no coincidence. Th e strong competitive spirit of the BC Games off ers blossoming athletes a motiva-tional push, Wotherspoon says.
“It was kind of one of the fi rst times I played against the best guys around the province – a bar setting for where I stood, even at that age,” he says.
Wotherspoon and a goalie from his winning BC Winter Games team, fellow Surrey native Laurent Bros-soit, have since been draft ed by the Calgary Flames.
Other local graduates of the BC Games program – considered a step-ping stone to national and inter-national competition – have seen similar success.
Guilford Park Secondary’s Isaac Bernard, who competed in the BC Summer Games in Kelowna in 2008, has won fi ve straight provincial wres-tling titles – only the fourth wrestler in B.C. high school history to do so. Bernard is now a member of the Canadian junior wrestling team, and was chosen to carry the B.C. fl ag into the opening ceremonies of the 2009

Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island.
Meanwhile, North Delta soft ball pitcher Jocelyn Cater, who was also in Kelowna in 2008, will take the mound for the University of Washington in Seattle this fall.
Th e most recent BC Winter Games, held in Vernon this past February, was a re-introduction of sorts to gymnastics for Panorama Ridge Secondary’s Duncan Losin.
Th e 14-year-old had taken the previous year off from the high bars and was looking for some extra competition.
“It was great, the [BC Winter Games] was fun,” says Losin. “Next year I’m trying out for the Western Canada Games.”
Another fringe benefi t of the Games is new friendships. Wotherspoon has kept in contact with some hockey alumni from the 2008 BC Winter Games.
He also has some advice for athletes competing in the upcoming 2012 BC Summer Games in Surrey.
“You know, I think that everyone always gets caught up in the publicity. Play as hard as you can – that’s all you can control,” says Wotherspoon.
EVAN SEAL / THE LEADERFormer BC Games athlete Tyler Wotherspoon cautions athletes against getting “caught up in the publicity.”

by Maria Spitale-LeiskEnhanced sporting opportunities at
Bear Creek Park and the South Surrey Athletic Park will be a considerable, lasting legacy of the 2012 BC Summer Games.
Two new beach volleyball courts are currently being installed at the latter venue in the city’s south corridor. Meanwhile, the Bear Creek Park track will be receiving an extensive, $400,000 facelift .
“We fi nd Bear Creek Park is one of Surrey’s most-used facilities – popular with casual walkers,” says Dan Nielsen, special projects manager at Surrey Parks, Recreation and Culture.
Th e Games off ers the perfect op-portunity for Surrey residents to catch 20 electrifying sporting events at 15 fi rst-class venues.
“We call it the South Surrey hub,” says Tom Hastie, director of sport, 2012
BC Summer Games, referring to six events within a fi ve-to-10 minute walk: rugby, volleyball, beach volleyball, baseball, triathlon and diving.
Meanwhile the outdoor water sports – wake boarding, canoeing, kayaking and rowing – are actually taking place outside of the host city, at venues in Abbotsford, Langley and Delta.
Hastie notes the rising Fraser River waters could threaten the rowing event at the Langley Rowing and Paddling Centre situated in a side channel of the mighty river.
“I’m a bit concerned about the rise of water on the Fraser River that might be coming down from all this rain and snowmelt,” says Tom Hastie, director of sport, 2012 BC Summer Games.
Mother Nature’s unpredictably aside, everything else is on track venue-wise for this year’s BC Summer Games, Hastie says.
