Radio Bails Out MidwestBY BEVERLY MIRE

Although radio was largelyunaffected by the massiveflood that was devastatingthe Midwest last week, themedium put its resourcestogether to help listenersaffected by the disaster.

The only GAVIN station wespoke to that experienced apower outage was KXIA-Marshalltown, Iowa, which, program director RogerLewis reported, was thrownoff the air for a little over anhour. Even outlets inDavenport, the town pro-grammers said was hardesthit, stayed afloat.

President Clinton touredflood sites last Wednesday(July 14) and then went on

radio to take calls from arearesidents.

"We're doing normal pro-gramming, just more newsand updates," said SandyWyborny, station manager ofKEZT-Ames/DesMoines,where residents won't beable to drink tap water for atleast a month.

"It's a mess," agreesKOKZ-Waterloo/CedarRapids PD Dan Olsen, whose primary goal is tokeep his station from sound-ing like it's capitalizing on atragedy. "We're not jumpingon a 'public service' band-wagon and tooting our horn. We're directing listeners tothe organizations who canhelp them rather than try todo it ourselves."

    Elvis Has Leftthe Bank

    BY BEN FONG-TORRES

Elvis Presley never sangmuch about money. In 1956,he covered ClydeMcPhatter's "Money Honey"on an EP (a four -song,"extended play" record), butit went nowhere.

    But that won't stop themerchandisers.

The latest to try to cash inon Americans' undying loveaffair with the King isCurrent Inc., a ColoradoSprings, Colo., company thatis introducing a line of ElvisPresley checks.

Having completed a dealwith Elvis Presley Inc., thelicensing arm of Presley'sestate, the company willintroduce the checks July 12.Taking a cue from the PostalService's experiences,Current Inc. is offering fourimages of Presley, all in whatit calls "young Elvis" designs:

and a three-quarter lengthpose of the Elmeister.(Current offers the checks bymail order. For information, call 1-800-533-3973.)

"With these checks," saidRon Eilers, a vice presidentat Current, "customers cancarry a little bit of the Kingwith them every day."

Sensitivity about listenerseven extended into playlists.Olsen dropped Steve Miller's"Wide River" and Madonna's"Rain" from his playlist, andother area stations presum-ably considered similarmoves (See sidebar).

On the flip side, at V100(KFAV)-St. Peters, Missouri,PD/MD Sheila Sand said lis-teners were requesting songsabout rain and rivers, "tolighten their feelings and totake their minds off it a bit."

KLVY-Dubuque's JoeDawson gave away SteveMiller CDs. Dawson, whoalso didn't divert much fromregular programming, react-ed to reports that peoplewere finding catfish in theircellars in a decidedly offbeatway, considering the circum-stances.

"We gave away 105pounds of catfish in case youdidn't have any in your base-ment." On the more seriousside, Dawson reports that his

station solicited listeners'help sandbagging parts ofEast Dubuque, and gave vol-unteers T-shirts that proclaim

"We Survived the Flood of'93 with K -Live 105."

"We wanted to cheer peo-ple up," he says.

Drowning in a Sea of SongsWhile stations in the Midwest ponder what songs to playor not to play in the wake of the flood, GAVIN offers ashort list of songs and artists to think twice about.

While Steve Miller's "Wide River" is the most obviousfirst song on programmers' minds, there are also MoodSwing's "Rainsong," the Jackyls' "When Will it Rain," theRembrandts' "Chase the Clouds Away," and CyndiLauper's "Who Let in the Rain?"

Also to be mulled over are such classics as "How High'sthe Water, Mama" by Johnny Cash, "River Deep,Mountain High" by Tina Turner, "Catfish" by Joe Cocker,"Cry Me a River" by Cocker or Julie London, "StormyWeather" by Lena Home, and "Riders on the Storm" bythe Doors, "The Tide is High" by Blondie, and twoalbums, Wake of the Flood, by the Grateful Dead, andRaindogs by Tom Waits. (Here, you may add any of thedozens of rain and storm songs you know.)

Other artists who might have to be sidelined until thestorm blows over are the Waterboys, Wet Willie, MarvinRainwater, Fishbone, Toad the Wet Sprocket, RogerWaters, Muddy Waters, Johnny Rivers, and, of course,Gale Storm.

Hundreds Join Lawsuit AgainstWild 107 for Bay Bridge Tie -UpA lawsuit against Wild 107(KSOL)-San Francisco filedby a woman angered bybeing stuck in a massivetraffic jam caused by a stuntpulled by morning person-ality Erich "Mancow" Mullerhas ballooned, with hun-dreds of people asking tojoin in the $4 million classaction.

Claims run from the typi-cal missed appointmentsand flights to more seriouscharges. One man said histardiness cost him his job,and a San Leandro woman,Karen Delavallade, said thatshe was delayed to herAunt's funeral and arrivedas the coffin was being car-ried out of the mortuary.

    The jam took place May

26, when Muller halted traf-fic on the San FranciscoBay Bridge by having twovans block lanes while hissidekick, Chewy Gomez, got a haircut. The stunt wasmeant to be a swipe atPresident Clinton's $200snipping.

Shortly after the incident, attorney James Roberts ofSan Jose filed the lawsuiton behalf of NancyMartinez, a Fremont resi-dent who said she was 90minutes late to her job.Since then, inconveniencedcommuters have asked tojoin the suit. Delavalladewas particularly incensed."I just want (Muller) to real-ize that whatever power hethinks he has, he doesn't

have the right to stop peo-ple's everyday lives."

Before and after a short, paid suspension, Mulleroffered contrite apologieson the air and in the localpress, calling his actions"immature." However, talk-ing with a trade paper, hesuccumbed to some brag-gadocio: "I will always beknown as 'the a**hole whotied up the bridge,'-whichisn't that bad."

On June 11, Mancowpleaded guilty to publicnuisance and received threeyears' probation and a $500fine. He also had to pay$500 more to enroll in acommunity service programthat will cost him 100hours.

The Chicago Flubs: Windy City Chapter of

NARAS Condemns 'Irresponsible' MusicNewly -appointed NARASchairman Hank Neubergerhas his hands full. In May,his hometown (Chicago)chapter approved a motionput forth by NARAS gover-nor Nicholas Schmitz callingfor the organization to bemore active in condemning"irresponsible" music.Although names weren'tnamed in the motion,Schmitz has admitted a par-ticular disliking for Ice -Tand 2 Live Crew.

Specifically, the motionasks the RecordingAcademy to "address everyquestionable or controver-sial recorded product withequal (in volume and quan-tity) and balanced state-ments about both the rightto create, distribute and

market such a product andthe responsibility to beresponsible as creators, dis-tributors and marketers ofwhat some could reason-ably consider a question-able or offensive product."

How such a controversialmotion was passed is asource of embarrassmentfor the Chicago chapter.Only 10 out of about 40governors attended the Maymeeting, and after a pon-derous, rambling speech bySchmitz, who is closelyaligned with music industrycritic Rev. Donald Wildmon, wanted to vote and gohome.

To Neuberger's, the chap-ter's and NARAS' embarrass-ment, a Chicago newspaperreported the motion just as

CDs: The New Vending TrendBr DAVID Bel AN

The term "bubble gum"music may turn out to beprophetic if consumerswarm to the idea of pur-chasing music from vendingmachines. Like chewinggum, soft drinks and snackfoods, CDs are now a pushof a button away.

Credit Studio City -basedVending Intelligence withthe idea. Test marketmachines are located in var-ious Southern Californiabusinesses ranging frommovie theaters to supermarkets. "We have a blendfrom Alice In Chains toPavoratti," says Pete Folger.president of VendingIntelligence. "Consumerscan choose from 48 selec-tions and we rotate titlesaccording to the area wherethe unit is located."

Movie theaters haveproved to be a natural loca-tion for machines. MovieTunes is the company thatlaunched the concept ofplaying pop songs betweenmovies and in theater lob-bies over a year ago. "Aftera song plays, the screenshows a slide that says nowavailable at Movie Tunesales center in the lobby,"

explains Movie Tune presi-dent Bob Kardashian, whohas five machines in AMCtheatres, with plans formore. "We also show slidesof the vending machines inthe lobby. Soundtracks tofilms playing are made

available, and soundtracksto Jurassic Park andSleepless In Seattle are sell-ing well."

After picking a title, con-sumers are treated to a 30 -second sound bite from theCD. "They get up theircourage and press a but-ton," says Folger. "Thenthey can pay by cash, ATMcards or credit cards."

Neuberger was in theprocess of being elected tohis new post.

"Those ten governors andNick Schmitz have not doneone second's homeworkinto what the academy'shistory on this issue is,"Neuberger said. "As a result,we caught a lot of @%*&from this from a lot of peo-ple."

"We're trying to reachout and let rappers andeveryone else know thatJesse Helms is no friend tous," he said. "I don't think

now that the full board hasmet that there's any sympa-thy by majority vote for thisissue. I frankly think theypulled a fast one."

However, at the chapter'sJune meeting, a two and ahalf-hour marathon, theissue of the motion wasraised but somehow wentunresolved, as governorscut off discussion andNeuberger, at one point, called the notion "moot"and chastised the media forblowing the issue out ofproportion.

Country Artists TakeEagles to the LimitIt seems only right.

The Eagles, who carriedthe country -rock banner toits highest reaches in the'70s with such hits as"Desperado," "Lyin' Eyes"and "New Kid in Town,"will have an album of theirsongs recorded by agalaxy of today's countrystars.

The album, scheduledfor release in Septemberon Giant Records, willbenefit ex -Eagle DonHenley's Walden Woodsland -protection project inMassachusetts.

Participants in the albuminclude Clint Black, Brooks& Dunn, Billy Dean, VinceGill, Alan Jackson, LorrieMorgan and TrishaYearwood.

Henley had thought ofsuch a recording for sometime, he said, and decidedto take advantage of coun-try music's current status -not only as a hot musicform, but with artists mak-ing music that remindedHenley of what the Eaglesdid, with songs like"Peaceful Easy Feeling"and "Lyin' Eyes."

The Eagles, who scored16 Top 40 hits on Asylumfrom 1972 to 1981, werelyrically witty and harmon-ically -gifted practitioners ofthe country -rock form, fol-lowing in the footsteps of

such pioneers as MichaelNesmith, Rick Nelson,Linda Ronstadt, GramParsons, the Byrds, BuffaloSpringfield, Poco, and theFlying Burrito Brothers.

Since their breakup, drummer Henley and gui-tarist Glenn Frey have con-tinued to enjoy success, with Henley splitting histime between music andthe Walden Woods project.

Giant Records presidentIrving Azoff said that 40percent of the mechanicalroyalties from the albumwill go to Walden Woodsand the rest to the artists. To date, the lineup ofartists and songs is: JohnAnderson, "HeartacheTonight," Clint Black,"Desperado," SuzyBogguss, "Take it to theLimit," Brooks & Dunn,"Best of My Love," CarleneCarter, "The Long Run,"Diamond Rio, "Lyin' Eyes,"Vince Gill, "I Can't TellYou Why," Alan Jackson,"Tequila Sunrise," LorrieMorgan, "The Sad Cafe,"Travis Tritt, "Take it Easy,"Tanya Tucker, "AlreadyGone," and TrishaYearwood, "New Kid inTown." Billy Dean who, along with Yearwood andBlack, have worked inother Walden Woods ben-efits, is yet to be matchedwith a song.

Matthew King Kaufman: StillBeserkley After All These Years

    BY BEN FONG-TORRES

A funny country happenedto Matthew King Kaufmanon his way back into therecord industry.

It was Russia. But first things first.

Kaufman, fans of icono-clasts in the industry mayrecall, was the founder ofBeserkley Records inBerkeley, Calif. 20 yearsago. The label producedsuch underground favoritesas Jonathan Richman andthe Modern Lovers andEarthquake, along with apair of club bands, theRubinoos and the GregKihn Band, who brokethrough with hit records.

The label stopped signingand recording new acts inthe mid -'80s, and Kaufman, who had been a producerand songwriter as well aslabel head, has had a rela-tively low profile-untilnow. He has recentlyformed SOB (Son ofBeserkley) Records, withseveral acts, including thefirst SOB release, DiamondHead, a hard rock bandcredited with influencingthe work of Dave Mustaineof Megadeth and Lars Ulrichof Metallica.

"Metallica recorded theirsongs for their ownalbums," Kaufman says,

"and Mustaine actuallyworked on this newalbum."

    Yeah, but what aboutRussia?

It was early 1991,Kaufman recalls, when JohnDoukas, Earthquake's firstlead vocalist, asked him to

help him mount a videodocumentary on Russia, using archival footage fromthe U.S.S.R.

"We made a deal with theSoviet Filmmakers Associa-tion (now known as theKino Centre), which con-trols all the film ever shot inthe Soviet Union and wemade a 20 -hour series onthe period of time betweenthe Bolshevik takeoverabout 1917 to Perestroika in1989."

    Russia: the Missing Years

has been picked up byTime Warner and RhinoHome Video, and mayappear on PBS next year.

"I got to use the otherhalf of my brain," saysKaufman. "It's not likemusic, which is a reallyintuitive kind of thing."

With the film finished,Kaufman is back to

    music.

"It'sa really healthy environ-ment to return," he toldGAVIN. With Beserkley,"We ran out of radio as

the Album Rock thing wentfrom what it was to classicrock. Now, with Alternativethe way it is, there's awhole new avenue open tous for our kind of stuff."

The "stuff" includes, besides Diamond Head, singer -songwriter LindaBrady, Hobo, a four -pieceband (down from ninewhen they were theUptones), and Repulsa, apunk parody act. "They gotmy juices going again."

    (Some of the product of

Lucas' Next Film May BeRadio Murder Mystery

Having helped bringWolfman Jack to the bigscreen 20 years ago inAmerican Graffiti, directorGeorge Lucas is turning toradio again.

The Radioland Murders, apet project of his datingback to the Graffiti days, isbeing scripted for UniversalPictures by JeffReno and Ron Osborn(Moonlighting). No directorhas been named, and thereis no start date set for theperiod comedy, set in 1939,about a series of murders

that take place at a numberof radio stations.

Universal is hoping thatRadioland currently slatedfor a low budget in the $15million range-will drawLucas back into directing, something he hasn't donesince the original Star Warsin 1977.

Lucas "would like to directagain," said Lucasfilm'sLynne Hale, "but it's any-one's guess when and what. It's too early to say." Shesaid he was unlikely todirect Radioland himself.

Lucas' ties to the projectbegan in the early '70s; theoriginal script was by BillHuyck and Gloria Katz, hiswriters for Graffiti. But itgot lost in the shuffle ofLucas' other film and televi-sion commitments.

As producer and/or exec-utive producer, Lucas isinvolved with the currentABC series, The Adventuresof Young Indiana Jones, andfuture projects range froman adventure film, Red Tails,to a trilogy of prequels toStar Wars.

the old juices will be issuedas Beserkley's Best onBlackheart Records, a NewYork -based label owned byfriends of Kaufman.)

"I'm going for the song-writers," says Kaufman. "Ican't go with what's hap-pening or isn't happeningtoday. Songs are classic andspan through time. And Ireally like the idiosyncraticvocalists, which is evidentfrom my past history."

"I gotta tell you, the thingthat bothers me the most isnot the record business," hesays. "It's radio. The recordindustry would do a lot bet-ter if radio was healthier. Asa kid, I loved to hear hitsongs in a hit rotation. There're too many stationswho are like a boutiquementality. The tie-inbetween a hit song andradio seems to be lost on

about 70 percent of the sta-tions in the country. If it's apopular song-I don't careif it's New Age or Album-playing it a bit more thanonce or twice a day wouldreally breathe some healthinto the entire industry."

Another disappointmentfor Kaufman was video."The whole rock videothing could have been anentire field of true artisticcreation," he says, "andinstead it became justanother merchandising tool. Those are the two thingsthat bothered me the most, but not enough to keep meout of the business. And if Iwasn't optimistic and thinkthat it'll all change, then I'dturn into an old fuddy-duddy. I'm not ready forold fuddy-duddyism."

The veteran executive, known as the toastmaster of therecording industry, was recently named executive pro-ducer of entertainment activities for World Cup Soccer, which will take place in America for the first time nextyear with matches scheduled in nine different citiesacross the country.

While soccer is immensely popular in most of theworld, it has never gained massive U.S. acceptance. Eventorganizers are betting that holding the World Cup herewill bring soccer fever to America.

"First we're planning a major television show, pro-duced by Dick Clark Productions, to be aired inDecember from Las Vegas before what is called the finaldraw,' which has a billion viewers around the world,"Smith told GAVIN. "We're going to surround 'the draw'with a major entertainment package."

Susequent telecasts are expected to reach more than abillion soccer fans, and Smith expects that 2 billion peo-ple will be watching the final extravaganza, to be stagedat the Hollywood Bowl the night before the July 17 final.

Although no big name acts have been solidified, Smithwill be announcing participants within the next twomonths. "The opportunity to have this kind of interna-tional audience is stunning for almost any artist," he says.

Smith is wagering his efforts will establish a fanbase forSoccer in this country. "If the American team does reallywell, if we establish some idols-there's be such activitygoing on for so many weeks there's bound to be greaterinterest," he says.

New owner for WILD 107 (KSOL)-San Francisco is Art Velasquezwho reportedly has bought the station for 13.5 mil. Speculation of a formatchange is fueled by the fact Velasquez owns one other property, WOPA/AMin Chicago-a Spanish outlet. But that rumor is being strongly denied.

That explosive sound in the Big Apple was the champagne being popped atWPLJ where Cuddy, Shannon, Preston and Company were celebrat-ing victory in the Top 40 wars with a 12+ gain, 3.7 to 4.0, in the SpringARB. It put 'PLJ ahead of Z100 (WHTZ) for only the second time in 10

years. For its part, Z100 held steady at 3.8 and will be celebrating 10 yearson the air with a show at Madison Square Garden July 28, starringBon Jovi, Duran Duran, 10,000 Maniacs, Terence Trent D'Arbyand The Proclaimers. APD/MD Frankie Blue and programming assis-tant Cathy Donovan have been there since the station's infancy. As for talkabout changes in format (yes, we've heard Country), don't expect any tocome down soon, if at all. But will there be a new morning lineup?

More ARB news flashes have KROQ-Los Angeles beating KIIS for the firsttime, as the Modern Rock legend jumps 3.9 to 4.3 and KIIS drops 4.4 to

4.0. POWER 106 (KPWR) still leads with their 5.0 share. And Top 40 isalive and well in Chicago where B96(WBBM/FM) explodes 5.0 to 5.7! Lotsof talk in the Windy City about the sta-tion's current outdoor campaign.(left)

Chase Show.In the opinion of VP, program-

ming Keith Naftaly, "If you positionyourself, like we do, as The People'sStation' and you're targeting realpeople on the streets, you're makinga total commitment to the streetsand the community." Naftaly says helooks for "signals from the streets onanything from new bands, some-thing political, something emotional, whatever" because "it's an extensionof 'The People's Station's' monikerto transform KMEL into an outletand platform for the concerns of ourlisteners."

Due to heavy TV and press cover-age on the subjects and the resultingnegative publicity, Naftaly knewthey were "heavy on the minds ofour listeners because this culturallydiverse part of town is such a bigpocket of KMEL territory. It's impor-tant to tackle these real issues." Asto blowing off music for two hours,Keith says "It seems almost trivial tot.t I I. about the best variety, the most

KMEL106.1music or hear Whoomp! (There ItIs)' for the 75th time, especially ifyou're a community -driven station.Just like we did when the earth-quake hit or during the aftermath ofthe Rodney King trial, you have tojust shut things down and allowpeople to vent."

To those who agree, but may bereluctant to devote a good part ofdrive time on a music station to talk-ing about serious issues, Keith says,"That's when you can really make apoint-when you have the highestconcentration of listeners. We're notapologizing for what we're doing ortrying to hide these things at foula.m. on Sunday under a publicaffairs heading. This is 1993 andpeople are concerned about prob-lems-in the minds of our listeners, that takes priority over the 'DazzleThe Dorks"'

In Naftaly's view, it's all a questionof balance, and while KMEL's focusis on entertainment and music, hedemands the same passion from hisstaff about street concerns as hedoes about selling the music.Research tells him that KMEL listen-ers are "more intense and deep thanthey once were." Proving that, hesays, are perceptuals revealing thatthe first comment heard about thestation, ahead of its music or overallsound, is that the audience feelsKMEL truly cares about its listeners.

He offers several words of cau-tion, however. He is not promotinga public service -driven format. "Nota real good idea," he says. Doing
