Early Settlers in the Town of LenoxTaken trom "History of Chenango & MadisonCounties, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880.

Lenox was formed trom Sullivan March 3,1809. Early settlements of the town were madealmost entirely by the descendants of the earlyDutch settlers along the productive valley ofthe Mohawk.

They started migration as early as 1790.The Germans, or more correctly, the Dutch, ftom the Mohawk valley, had passed throughhere and discovered the land to be a goodlyheritage to whomsoever should possess it.

They had decided to remain in Sullivan, with the consent of the Oneidas, upon the landof their choice; they were not at alldisheartened by the reverses and poverty whichseemed to constantly attend their first efforts atsettlement, nor did their ill fortune deter others&om following in Continued Next Page

their footsteps. The year 1792, brought the firstwhite settlers of the town of Lenox. ConradKlock and his sons, Joseph, John and Conrad, from the Mohawk country, came to the vicinityof Clockville, and there located their homes. Itis from this family that the village wassubsequently named. Their settlement wasincreased by additions from the lowerMohawk; the Betsingers, the Moots, JacobForbes and Nicholas Forbes. They opened aroad through to Canaseraga, whichcommunicated with Oneida Castle, and alongthis road, during the next few years, manyfamilies settled. Capt. Jacob Seeber and others,of the Sullivan pioneers, removed to thislocality. Southeast ofClockville, about twomiles, was quite a compact settlement ofDutch, among whom were the Snyders,Bmyeas, Kilts and Tuttles. A half mile west ofClockville, at the four corners, one of thesettlers named Foft, kept a tavern for manyyears. At this day (1871,) many of the oldfarms are in possession of members of theabove named families; D. B. Moot is inpossession of the old Forbes place; N. M.Moot owns the homestead of his father; AdamKlock has also his father's homestead; AbramSnyder is the owner of the farm his father,Adam R. Snyder, took up.

Obituaries

When doing genealogy research I find thatobituaries are great sources of information. Ihad over 150 Obituaries on line on the KlockConnections Web Page. When in New Yorkthis summer I found about 100 more for theweb page. (Now on Line) I found the obits atthe Fort Plain Museum, Historical Societiesand Libraries. Some do not have the name of

the newspaper or the date they were printed. Ifyou have an obituary you would like me to addto the web page, just send me a copy of theclipping and I will be happy to include it onthe Klock Connections web page.

While making the obits ready to put on theweb page I found an Obituary of a Peter Klock.I had been trying to place an Edgar JacksonKlock for quite some time. I have not beenable to find his father or how he fit in the

family tree. I know not all the Klock's in theMohawk Valley descended from HendrickKlock. There were a least two Klock familiesin the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionthat mayor may not have been related. However, family tradition runs strong thatHendrick Klock came to this country with twoand some say as many as five brothers. If thisis true, what happened to them? Did they go toPennsylvania? Lot's of Klock Families inPennsylvania. We know some of HendrickKlock's descendents went to Pa. Were therecousins already settled there?

According to the following obituary of PeterKlock his family were not connected toHendrick Klock.
