WORSHIP & PRAYER
Attention EMEs and Lectors:
The July schedule is “live” and
available on the MSP website
and printed copies in the
Servers’ Sacristy. I plan to run
the August schedule the week
of July 27. Please send me all
time-off or special requests by
Sunday, July 26. All ministers
have done a wonderful job
with adapting to our new
routines for Mass and helping
us be as safe as possible.
Each ministry has
modifications to their duties in
order to follow Diocesan
mandates. Thank you for your
kindness and consideration of
all who attend Mass.
For those who attend the
outdoors Mass, would you
kindly consider wearing a
mask when the ushers or EMs
are in front of you? They are
required to protect you by
wearing their masks when they
are performing their duties.
Thank you in advance for your
consideration.

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A, JULY 12, 2020 RECEIVE GOD’S WORD
Parables put things or events side by side so that something
profound can be seen and understood. Jesus uses parables to
open our eyes and ears to his good news. At baptism, the priest
opens our ears to receive the faith and our mouths to proclaim it.
Today’s Gospel does just that for the Apostles and for us.
Receiving the seed of God’s Word is our best way to richness and
fruitfulness beyond our imaginings. Are we, are you, good ground
for God? Hear God’s Word and keep it! Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. All rights reserved.

Now is the time to register for 2020-21 PSR! If you have not already done
so, we ask you to register your children as soon as possible. If you are
unsure of whether you want to participate in Sunday PSR or Home Study,
we request that you register but indicate this, so we can begin to
communicate with you as decisions are made about the format we will use.
With so much uncertainty, it will be very helpful to everyone if we have our
students registered early to plan for the possibilities. The PSR registration
form is available online at sjvmentor.org. Please call the Faith Formation
Office if you have any questions at 440.255.0600 or email
PSR will be happening for the 2020-21 school year! At this time, we are
not sure what it will look like as we consider the State guidelines and await
guidance from the Diocese, but we are working closely with everyone
involved to determine the best way forward. Be assured that we will do
everything possible to keep our families safe and at the same time help the
young people of our parish grow in faith. Our plan may involve in person or
distance learning, but will include plenty of support, new methods, and
opportunities to be community in some way. Information will be
communicated as we develop our plan and prepare to begin on
September 13, in some way.
Invitation letters have been mailed to Confirmation candidates for the
2020-21 preparation class. Candidates are asked to meet with a
designated member of the pastoral staff in July or August for an enrollment
conference as instructed in this letter. These sessions provide a great
opportunity for us to get to know the class, and we look forward to them! If
your 9th grader is eligible and you do not receive a letter, please call the
Faith Formation office at 440.255.0600 or email [email protected].
Our 2019-20 Confirmation class will tentatively be confirmed on Sunday,
October 25, at the 12:15 pm Mass by Bishop Marty Amos. First
Communion celebrations have been tentatively rescheduled to the
weekend of September 26 and 27. We will have one large group
celebration at 10:00 am on September 26. Families will also be able to
choose any Mass that weekend other than the 7:30 am Mass to celebrate
in a smaller group. The details and any instructions for these sacramental
celebrations will be provided at a later date. If you find that you have a
significant conflict with the dates, please contact the Faith Formation Office
at 440.255.0600 or email [email protected].
First Communion interviews were put on hold during our stay at home time,
and we will resume those at this time for all who still need to do so. If you
are uncomfortable coming to the office, we completely understand and will
work with you. Please call Laura at 440.255.0600 or email
[email protected] if this is the case.

PASTOR’S PAGE
Dear Parishioners,
The above is a picture taken by our parishioner,
Luci Dalton, from her Thunderbird Drive home on
Lake Erie. I went to the park nearby her home at
sunset last week to take in one of our beautiful
local sunsets. She later sent me this picture which
truly captured the beauty of a Lake Erie sunset at
this time of the year. It made me think of verse
three of Psalm 113. As we approach “the lazy,
hazy days of summer,” be sure to make some time
to enjoy this beautiful time of the year and to thank
the Lord for the beautiful world which He has
created and given to us. My dad always said,
“once 4th of July has passed, summer is over.”
The 4th of July has passed but summer is far from
over. Let us slow things down and enjoy each and
every day given to us by God. I plan to take
Monday and Tuesday off this week and enjoy two
of the “lazy, hazy days of summer.” I hope that
you can do the same before “you know what”
starts!
Speaking of “you know what,” Katy Rankin, our
new principal at All Saints, and I have begun to
meet with the Task Force established by Terri
Armelli to plan for the re-opening of our parish
school in August. The Catholic Diocese of
Cleveland’s Office of Education has prepared a
cohesive plan for both in-person and remote
learning in the coming school year. The Task
Force will study that document and the results of
the survey completed by our school parents and
teachers recently, as well as the Ohio K-12
Schools Guidance Report released by Governor
DeWIne at his press conference last week. We
have our work cut out for us but I am confident
that the Lord will guide us and help us to come up
with a plan that is best for our children. Please
keep us in your prayers in the coming weeks. I
will be sure to keep everyone informed of the plan
as it develops. I know that Laura McBride, our
Faith Formation Director, is also working on the
plan for the start of the Parish School of Religion
program at Lake Catholic in September. I
included elsewhere in this bulletin some
information on how we are trying to return to
“normal” at the parish this summer, e.g. Masses,
weddings, funerals, baptisms, parish meetings,
etc. The pastoral staff met last week to begin this
conversation.
This is the weekend when we will draw the
winners of the Saint John Vianney Summer Raffle.
As you know we canceled the traditional SJV
Summer Festival but we decided to keep the
Summer Raffle as a way to lessen the anticipated
loss of revenue from not having a four day festival.
The plan worked and the summer raffle has been
very successful thanks to your very, very generous

support! As I type this on Wednesday morning,
July 8, ticket sales have exceeded over $100,000!
I think that is a record amount! We will draw the
winning tickets at 8:00 on Sunday evening. The
grand prize is $15,000 or the Ford Escape lease,
second prize is $2,000 and third prize is the 65”
Samsung television. The Lake County Health
Department has allowed us to have a “social
distance” tail-gating picnic prior to the 8:00 raffle,
beginning at 4:00.
You are welcome to join us by parking in our lot in
every other space, bringing your own chairs for
seating, and keeping an appropriate distance from
your fellow parishioners while you enjoy the
activities. Hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. will be
prepared by Glenn from Cater to You and sold &
served by our gloved and masked volunteers. We
have a Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band playing from
5:00-7:30, will be selling instant bingo tickets, and
have a variety of beverages for sale as well. You
are encouraged to wear face masks, use the hand
sanitizers which will be available, and do what you
need to do to keep everyone safe and healthy.
Pray for nice weather as well! There is no back-up
plan if it is raining!
Thank you to the Festival Committee for coming
forward to help with this event and thank you to
Classic Auto for making the Ford Escape available
to us as a possible prize this year. Hopefully we
will be able to put the COVID pandemic behind us
soon and have a regular Summer Festival in July
of 2021. If things do get better in the fall, and if it
is safe to do so, we may have an Octoberfest of
some sort on a Saturday night. We can have a
German band provide entertainment and Glenn
from Cater to You said that he could prepare some
good German food. Glenn also said that he would
be open to doing some kind of curb-side food
service from the Social Center before the summer
is over, possibly BBQ ribs or chicken or a pasta
dinner. The members of the Parish Council came
up with these suggestions at our April meeting. I
appreciate their creativity and suggestions.
Pictured above are Tim and Fran Murphy who
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the
4th of July. They renewed their wedding vows at
our Shrine to the Blessed Mother on the Thursday
morning prior to the holiday weekend. They
married on July 4, 1970 at Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church in Wickliffe. I recall having a few
weddings over the years on Independence Day. I
tell those couples that it is ironic that on the day
we celebrate our independence as a nation, they
choose to surrender some of their independence
and become interdependent. I remember asking
one of the grooms why he wanted to marry on the
4th of July and he said “because she is my little
fire-cracker!”
Last week was also Deacon Greg and Ann
Leisure’s wedding anniversary. They married on
July 3, 1982 at Saint Joseph Parish in Cincinnati.
They celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary
this year and Greg also celebrated his 60th
birthday a week earlier on June 23. God gave
Greg a belated birthday gift when He brought
Anne into his life to be his wife. Greg and Ann
have been a blessing to the parish and I
appreciate all that they do for us at the parish. He
is a good deacon for sure!
God bless you and have a great week. Thanks
again for all your support of the raffle! FTJ

TRYING TO GET BACK TO NORMAL
PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS: We have been
celebrating one daily Mass and three weekend
Masses with community present for the past six
weeks. Limiting the number of Masses allows time
for sanitizing the church and we are grateful for the
volunteers who assist us. About 60-80 people attend
daily Mass, and the number of people attending
weekend Masses increases each week. The two
indoor Masses on the weekend (4:00 Saturday and
7:30 Sunday) have about 200 people in attendance at
each. The 10:30 outdoor Mass is most popular and
has about 800 people in attendance. Our pre-COVID
weekend Mass total was about 2000 people. On the
last weekend of June we had over 1200 people in
attendance at the 3 weekend Masses. That means that over 50% of our regular Mass-attending
parishioners are present for our recent weekend liturgies. The plan is to continue through August with
one daily Mass and the three weekend liturgies. However, if Mass attendance increases and there is a
need for additional Masses, we will plan accordingly. You will notice the blue tape has been removed
and white rope now marks the pews which are to remain empty. Parishioners now know how to
maintain social distance in the church seating and in the processions. The obligation to attend Mass
on Sunday has continued to be dispensed by the Church. Catholics do not need to attend Mass in
person and it is sufficient to watch Mass in your home. We hope to celebrate the 10:30 Sunday Mass
in the parking lot as long as weather permits, hopefully through the month of September.
BAPTISMS: New parents who wish to have their first child baptized may do
on-line sacramental preparation until the first Sunday of October when in-
person Baptism preparation class resumes at the parish. Call one of the
priests for information on on-line sacramental preparation. The Diocese has
approved the celebration of Baptism at the parish but requires that only one
baby be baptized at the Baptism ceremony. Family members and guests
are to wear face masks and maintain social distance during the ceremony.
Call one of the priests to schedule the Baptism. Baptism typically takes
place on a Sunday.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance currently is celebrated on Saturday
afternoons from 2:45 to 3:45. One priest is in the chapel for face-to-face confession and another priest
is in the John Paul II Room for face-to-face confession or behind the screen confession. At the present
time we are not able to use the Reconciliation rooms in the church because of poor ventilation in the
room and the inability to maintain social distance. In August we will resume celebrating the Sacrament
of Penance on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 7:30 in a corner of the church where appropriate social
distance can be maintained between the priest and the penitent.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: First Holy Communion was postponed in May due to
the corona virus. It has been rescheduled to take place on the weekend of
September 26 & 27. A large group celebration will take place on Saturday at 10:00
and smaller group celebrations can take place at the 4:00 Saturday vigil Mass or the
10:30 Sunday Mass. Parents who wish to have the celebration sooner are to select
any weekend between now and then and to call the Faith Formation Director with
the request.
WEDDINGS: Several spring and summer weddings were postponed
due to the corona virus. Several weddings took place with the
required restrictions. Postponed weddings were rescheduled for the
fall or the spring and summer of 2021. It will make for busy wedding
seasons in the coming year! It seems that many of the late summer
weddings and the fall weddings will be able to take place. Overall the
number of 2020 weddings will be lower than previous years and the
number of 2021 weddings will likely be higher than usual. Engaged
couples are reminded to contact the priest who they wish to celebrate
their wedding prior to booking a venue for the reception.
ALCOHOLIC ANONYMOUS MEETING: Our parish has one of the larger A.A. meetings in Lake
County. The group had to stop meetings in person in mid-March due to the corona virus. We were
recently given permission by the Lake County Health Department to resume the Tuesday meetings in
July but to limit the number of people attending the meeting to 50.

COMMUNION CALLS TO THE SICK: For the time being the Diocese has asked that communion
ministers not bring Holy Communion to the homebound unless it is to a member of their family with
whom they live or with whom they have daily interactions. The priests may bring Holy Communion to
the homebound when there is a pastoral need, especially when the person is at home and in need of
the last rites: penance, anointing of the sick, Holy Communion, and the Apostolic Blessing. It has been
difficult for the priest to visit the sick or infirm in hospitals or nursing homes. Some institutions limit
access to patients, including visits by clergy. Please continue to pray for the sick and the hospitalized
and for an end to the pandemic.
FUNERAL: Funeral Masses and services have been allowed in the church and the funeral homes with
some restrictions since the corona virus began. Initially the Funeral Masses were limited to the
members of the immediate family, a very small group of people. Since Pentecost, the last weekend of
May, Funeral Masses are no longer limited to members of the immediate family. Others are welcome
to attend the Mass and are asked to wear masks and maintain social distance. The number of people
who attend Mass is to be no more than 50% of the occupancy rate of the space. Family members can
sit in close proximity but others are to maintain a distance of six feet. Our church can comfortably hold
several hundred people maintaining appropriate social distance.
FATHER KLINE SOCIAL CENTER AND CATER TO YOU: On June 1, Ohio issued guidelines for
Party Centers. Contact Glenn at Cater to You 440.479.5392 for information and reservations for a
catered event at the Father Kline Social Center. He has been scheduling wedding receptions, showers,
and other kinds of parties where lunch or dinner is served. Appropriate social distancing is maintained
at these events.
PARISH ACTIVITIES OR ORGANIZATIONS: Everyone using shared outdoor space (Blessed Mother
Shrine, Lawn area by the Boy on the Globe, Lawn area by Gazebo, Outside Church entrance
area, Lawn area by the Guardian Angel) must keep a distance of at least 6 feet except for family
members. If you are planning to use any outdoor areas listed here, please call Donna at the Parish
Office to reserve a time and location for your outdoor meeting/event. Organizations who wish to use
indoor spaces at the parish need to consider the “Guiding Principles for Parish Ministries During
the Coronavirus Pandemic” prepared by the Cleveland Diocesan Secretariat for Parish Life and
Development. Pastoral staff members have copies of the document and can help leaders determine
whether a group should or should not meet indoors during the time of this pandemic and how they
might do so.

Thank you to all for
volunteering at and /or
supporting our “fun”draiser/
tailgate party this weekend.
With many cancelations it is
nice to be able to support our
parish and “get together.” If
you have time to come over
today, Sunday, July 12, from
4:00 pm-8:00 pm, we are
happy to have you join us in
the church parking lot. Bring
your chairs and sit in front of or
behind your parked car and
enjoy grilled and prepackaged
foods, participate in raffles,
listen to the Jimmy Buffet
tribute band “Cheeseburger in
Paradise,” and more all while
social distancing and following
the high recommendation for
wearing a mask. Again, your
support of the parish is greatly
appreciated during these
uncertain times.
