Last month, Chapter Offi cers representing ASPE’s fi ve Regions got together for the annual Region Meetings, which were held in Boston, Evansville, Nashville, Los Angeles, and Houston. I thank those who attended as well as the Chapters that hosted this year’s meetings, which went very well. in place, we will start by enhancing our educational programs while working to get some research projects off the ground. We are taking small steps now, but to be successful in the long run, we need to make sure we have a solid foundation.

Applications for the next Society Board of Directors have been submitted, and the Nominating Committee chaired by past Presi-dent Bill Hughes, CPD, LEED AP, FASPE, has begun reviewing the candidates. e committee consists of the Chair, one representative from each Region, and two Presidential appointments, so the Society is well represented. e primary role of the committee is to develop a recommended slate of offi cers for the Delegates. To do this, the com-mittee must review all of the applications to make sure the candi-dates qualify for a position in accordance with the Bylaws. e com-mittee then schedules an interview with each candidate to discuss their goals and the reasons why they believe they should be elected to the Board of Directors. is is a very important piece of the process because most of our Delegates do not either know the candidates personally or have the time to perform their own personal interviews with all of them. e committee does the majority of the legwork for the Delegates, and this is why they prepare the recommended slate of offi cers, which consists of the candidates the committee believes are the best-qualifi ed individuals for the positions. Once this process is completed, the Nominating Committee will release the recom-mended slate of offi cers so the Delegates can start reviewing all of the information before they cast their ballots in Atlanta.

Speaking of the Convention, registration is open at expo.aspe.org, and we are expecting a record turnout this year. If you have never attended an ASPE Convention & Expo, you need to consider it this year. is is the largest event for plumbing system design profes-sionals of its kind. e Convention kicks off with a Green Plumbing Design workshop, followed by numerous committee meetings. If you have ever wanted to see our committees in action, these meetings are open to anyone. A few special events will be held specifi cally for the Women of ASPE (WOA), ASPE Young Professionals (AYP), fi rst-time attendees, ASPE certifi cation holders, and those members who have been with the Society 25 years and longer. e Expo is the larg-est of its kind, and this year we will have more than 300 exhibitors with more than 600 booths for you to explore and learn all about the latest trends in the industry. If you are looking to earn CEUs, you are in luck. Continuing education credits can be earned simply by visiting the exhibition show fl oor and learning about plumbing system products from the many diff erent manufacturers and their design engineers who will be in attendance. You can also earn CEUs by attending any of the technical sessions that will be off ered on topics ranging from design, sizing, and construction to equipment and the latest trends. Attendees will also have some time to relax at the Sunday Night Party that will be held at Tabernacle Atlanta in the Centennial Park District. Hopefully you will be able to join us this year in Atlanta, which should be an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Due to its niche nature, plumbing engineering offers a long, stable, and profi table career, but breaking into the profession can be challenging if employers aren’t aware of your unique skills. That’s where the Certifi ed Plumbing Design Technician (CPDT) credential can help. As the only credential

specifi c to plumbing system designers early in their careers, the CPDT provides immediate recognition of individuals skilled in this trade. That’s why Ashley Turlington, CPDT, recommends earning the designation. “Companies seek candidates with credentials

pertinent to their fi eld,” she says. “The CPDT can open up a lot of professional opportunities.”

DEMONSTRATE YOUR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGEAdministered by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE), the CPDT program provides a standard of professional competence in the practice of plumbing design at the technician level. Employers are assured that designers who have earned the CPDT credential have the requisite knowledge and skills to excel in their company. This is one of the primary reasons individuals pursue the designation. “I earned my CPDT credential to demonstrate my technical knowledge of plumbing, and it has given me better recognition as a well-rounded plumbing designer,” says John Lansing, CPDT, LEED Green Associate.

VALIDATION OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTSThrough its rigorous processes, the CPDT pro-gram identifi es professionals who have demon-strated their expertise and abilities in the fi eld of plumbing design. The certifi cation exam tests an individual’s profi ciency in skills that employers desire, such as laying out systems, sizing calcula-tions, selecting equipment, and preparing doc-umentation. The test specifi cations and content refl ect the abilities essential to performing at the technician level of a plumbing designer. The CPDT credential gives you “more respect, validation of your accomplishments, and [subsequently] more compensation,” says Justin Wroblewski, CPDT.

IMPROVE YOUR VALUE TO YOUR COMPANYThe CPDT program’s recertifi cation requirement means that CPDTs must stay current on new techniques and technologies through continuing education, which is a desirable trait to employers who are looking for an edge in the competitive MEP market. Having CPDTs on their staff showcases a fi rm’s expertise and their commitment to maintaining the highest, most up-to-date design standards. “My CPDT credential has allowed my company to get better jobs because clients view us as more knowledgeable,” Turlington says. And the benefi t is mutual. “Taking the step to improve your value to your company will also benefi t your career,” says Wroblewski.

HOW TO ACCELERATE YOUR CAREERThe CPDT program is designed for plumbing system designers with less than eight years of professional experience, and the exam is held annually at online testing sites around the world. If you are planning on achieving ASPE’s internationally renowned Certifi ed in Plumbing Design (CPD) credential, the CPDT is an excellent starting point.
