Our much anticipated first „Preview Service‟ finally arrived. In hindsight, we should probably

have produced an advent calendar, complete with a chocolate concealed behind each date

marking the countdown. After all, the process of establishing a new church has a Christmas

feel to it. Like Christmas, there is a real sense of excitement and celebration as everyone

gets into the Spirit.

At 8am on Saturday the 13th of August, with just one more sleep before the first Preview,

our „Launch Team‟ gathered at Jubilee Primary School to „deck the hall‟. They didn‟t use

boughs of holly, but Jubilee‟s new multipurpose hall was lovingly and creatively transformed

into a contemporary worship space. Places were set for children, extra chairs were brought

out, food organised and prayers offered up.

The big day arrived and 120 people gathered to celebrate. The space was filled with the

sounds of family, songs of praise and thanksgiving. Central to the whole day was a

gathering around a shared meal, the Eucharist, God‟s favourite meal. The Spirit moved and

we sensed His presence.

Looking back on the time leading up to this first Preview Service we can‟t help but see God‟s

provision every step of the way. Just like Christmas, gifts poured in. God showered gift after

gift down on the vision of a new church. James 1:17 states “Every good and perfect gift is

from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like

shifting shadows.”

Looking forward to the next Previews (11th September and the 2nd October), I imagine God

getting ready to celebrate. He loves to party, „The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty

to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will celebrate

over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). We know that there is celebration in heaven; it is

where celebration originates from.

On Sunday 14th August 2011, was the first time that Newlife Uniting Church Robina,

worshipped as one church on two campuses (Robina and Pacific Pines). One church

meeting on multiple campuses is a means of multiplication, not division. There must have

been rejoicing in heaven!

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of Jubilee,

From time to time you will hear schools say that we are a „bully-free‟ school, when in actual fact they mean that as a

school community, they have zero tolerance of bullying. Bullying will be evident in every school in Australia (to varying

degrees) and to disagree with this would be unrealistic. It is important that we recognise that bullying can occur in

different forms. Most familiar is bullying which involves direct aggression such as violence, verbal or psychological abuse

etc. We typically associate such behaviours with boys as perpetrators, while girls tend to use more indirect behaviours

often referred to as relational aggression (exclusion, ignoring, disclosure of secrets, rumour spreading etc).

We know that bullying has long-term detrimental effects on victims and, therefore, it is important that, as parents, we do

what we can to help our children effectively deal with such problems. Here are some suggestions for parents to help their

children in cases of suspected bullying:

Take time to actively listen to your child to learn how he or she is coping with peer relationships … it is best to comment as

little as possible other than to let the child know you are listening … validate feelings with comments such as “you seem to

be handling that well” or “that must be hard for you”.

If there are obvious concerns … once you have listened and tried to understand how it is from his or her perspective, it is

important for both of you to adopt a problem-solving orientation … ideally the child stays “in charge”, but you might need to

lead him/her to this … avoid the temptation to over-react and become unnecessarily emotional, rather acknowledge the

concerns, validate how the child feels and look towards options that might solve the problem … role play effective

approaches to respond to bullying and rehearse these so that your child feels confident to use the strategies.

If necessary, make contact with the school to get support … ideally accompany your child to a meeting with the class

teacher/Admin person so that he/she can explain what is happening (that way your child feels „in control‟). Again, adopt a

problem-solving orientation … teachers don‟t condone bullying, but such behaviour is often difficult to identify (and

sometimes your child may not be giving you the full story).

Remember that bullying is usually a one-way process of attack, where the victim has less power or status and feels unable

to retaliate … „fights‟ which involve two-way aggressive behaviours between kids of equal power do not normally constitute

bullying, though they still need to be addressed.

Parents should avoid:

confronting another child or their parents about suspected bullying (it is more effective to contact the school to

enable an objective response to occur).

communicating sympathy, anger or blame (over-identifying with the child‟s emotions) when your child raises a

concern about bullying.

taking over the problem.

doing nothing.

[NB As an admin team, we are always happy to support parents in helping their kids in such situations … either email or

come and see us at the school office]

ROAD SAFETY –

With both parents working in many households, taking children to school can cause them to be late for work. As a result,

many parents take actions that could have devastating results for their families including:

Dropping children off while stopped in a line of traffic at traffic lights or at a supervised crossing (a child could be injured if

their vehicle is hit from behind or another vehicle overtakes the parent‟s vehicle).

Stopping on the non-school side of the road (when children see their friends, they may forget road safety instructions and

cross the road into the path of an on coming vehicle).

Stopping in “No Stopping” areas (this blocks the vision of both other motorists and pedestrians and could result in a crash

injuring your child).

In spite of tight deadlines, we must ensure our actions promote the safety of all children when we travel and park near

schools. If you are running late expect to get to your destination late – “Don‟t take Short Cuts!!”

Road Safety – We all play a part.

Suggestions for kids who are being bullied:

Stay calm and don't act angry or upset. Bullies love a reaction.

Practice what you'll do the next time it happens.

Don't fight back. If you fight back, you could make the situation worse, get hurt or be blamed for starting the trouble.

Try to calmly withdraw from the situation, ignore the bullying or say ‘no’ really firmly, then turn and walk away.

Avoid being alone in places where you know the bully is likely to pick on you.

Don't be afraid to tell an adult you trust, like a teacher or your mum or dad, and keep telling them over and over again.

Most of all, don't give up. Being bullied can make you feel really bad about yourself and very discouraged. This is what

the bullies want. If you don’t do something about it, they will be able to take advantage of you again.

Don’t give anyone else the power to ruin your day.

G’day from the APA

G’day everyone: Welcome to Week 7.

While it can be a tad inconvenient in some ways, the current wet weather we are experiencing is certainly most welcome in other ways. Our school oval and grounds will benefit greatly from the rain, as will our water tanks and that is something for which we can all be thankful.

One thing that‟s been a real hit around the school lately is the introduction of the new Jubilee Sports Uniform shirts. Many families have already taken the opportunity to purchase these new polos, which have a common overall design, with an insert body panel and sleeve in house colours. These shirts are being phased in and the old ones phased out this year and next and they are now available for purchase from the office and uniform shop at $29 each.

This coming Thursday 25th August, several of our Prep, Yr1, Yr 2 and Yr 3 classes will be attending and participating in choral speaking at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod at the Gold Coast Arts Centre. Our Junior Choir performed there admirably last week, so we congratulate them and Mr Parry and Co on their efforts. Now we wish our performing classes and their teachers and school officers all the best for their performances on Thursday.

Special School Focus: With the new sports shirt in mind and a change of season imminent, it is probably a very good

time for us to once again focus on correct school uniform. Our Special School Focus for the next two weeks will be :

“Show pride in Jubilee - always choose

To wear the right uniform, socks and shoes!”

In this focus, we will concentrate on the importance of wearing only correct Jubilee uniform items and wearing them with

pride. As part of this focus, parents are asked to be supportive in this regard and to also make sure that all items of uniform

have been clearly labelled for identification if lost. Our lost property bins are sadly once again overflowing with jumpers,

hats and other items.

Parent Parking: Binstead Way Parking Reminder

Just a reminder to all families about the issues related to vehicles parked in the bicycle lane along the edge

of Binstead way as one approaches the turning lane into our lower car park :

Our turning lane into our driveway is very short and the line of traffic banks back down Binstead Way at peak times. If cars are actually parked and left on the side of the road (in the bike lane) then this banking effect gets forced out into the left hand traffic lane, effectively blocking the through traffic in that lane.

As this situation occurs at the top of a rise, there is danger for oncoming and flow-through vehicles, who are then unexpectedly forced to change into the right hand lane to get past the bank-up.

It is a marked cycle lane and so if cars are parked there, cyclists are either forced onto the road or the footpath to continue through. These options are dangerous to riders and/or pedestrians.

Many of the parents parking in this stretch have been choosing to walk their children out the entry gateway along the

driveway, rather than using the crossings and footpaths at the lower exit. This is also dangerous.

I realise that the limitations on both internal and street parking in and around our school is a real issue for us, but we do

have to keep the safety of our students, families and others as our top priority. With all this in mind we ask that parents

please avoid or refrain from parking along that stretch of Binstead Way that leads up to the turning lane into our school.

Have a great Week 7, everyone!

Regards,

Brian Mason

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

"Realise that you own your time and that you can make whatever you want of it with total freedom."

From "The Little Book of Joy" by Dominique Glocheux

Certainly we have demands on our time, responsibilities that must be met and jobs that must be done. But when we begin

to treat each moment and each demand as the special gift it is, honouring it by giving it our full attention before moving on

to the next, then every day becomes a day well spent and every life becomes a celebration.

God bless you and best wishes for the week ahead.

Listening to the Spirit

Parents and local church ministers gathered for the first parent prayer group on Monday. It was really positive to share our

thoughts and words in God and with God. Part of this is learning to talk to God together and how we pray. Same time next

week.

When and where: Mondays, from 8.30 am to 9.00am in the meeting room, Jubilee Hall.

A Service of Prayer for Emergency Workers

I am really excited about our thanksgiving service for parents and family members in Emergency Services (police,

ambulance, and fire services, State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Brigade and Accident and Emergency nurses and staff

and numerous others). Soon invitations will go out to community members who are in these services inviting them to

attend our last day of term Thanksgiving Service. The children are going to have a significant part in this service. (Friday,

16 September)

All our students and staff, our local covenant church leaders and as many parents as are available are invited to come and

pray with thanks and honour all those who give themselves in service to our community.

Seasons for Growth Started

Our Grief and Loss Program for children begins today and goes for eight weeks. If you have not contacted me in regard to

your child‟s participation please do so as soon as possible.

Book Covering

Thank you for all your wonderful support with covering the hundreds of books over the past couple of weeks. Could we

ask that anyone who still has any packets of readers to return them in the next week if possible so the new Home Reading

system can be put into place.

Cyber safety Evening

A massive thank you must also go out to Snr. Constable Paul Shaw for his Cyber safety Information Evening he presented

last Thursday in the Meeting Room of the MPC. It was a fantastic presentation and was received well by all who attended.

Due to the interest and apologise of those who would have like to attend, Paul and I are now planning an encore

performance in Term 4 (Watch this Space) as well as doing a similar presentation with the Year 7 students and other

grades in the near future. If you would like any information for your own personal use, go to: www.cybersmart.gov.au and

look at one of their multiple resources available.

Bit Wet Under Foot

We were greeted this morning with a "little bit" of water through the entrance of the Resource Centre. Due to these

conditions we will be closing the Resource Centre to all business until further notice. This includes returning and borrowing

Home Readers. We apologise for any inconvenience and we will endeavour to have the RC back up and running ASAP.

Afternoon Tea Invitation to all parents of Diverse Learners

At Jubilee we recognise that the journey along the way is not always smooth for students, as well as their parents, as you

aim to support your children, particularly those students that have a diagnosis of an Impairment, a Learning Difficulty or is

visiting an outside professional (e.g. an Occupational Therapist or Speech Pathologist). The journey that you embark on

when it has been identified that your child will need additional support is one that is unpredictable, filled with emotion and

at times seems like a lengthy, ongoing process.

If you are a parent that would like an opportunity to chat to other parents that may be going through or have gone through

the experience that you have, regarding a child with Diverse Learning Needs, then please come along to our first After-

noon Tea for Parents of Diverse Learners. Support staff at Jubilee, such as Support Teacher: Inclusive Education (Disa

Hill), Guidance Counsellor (David Higgins) and Administration staff look forward to hosting this gathering and continuing it

into the future, offering the support to our community.

This Thursday, nine of our classes from Prep to Year three will be participating in the Class Verse Speaking at the Gold

It is a wonderful opportunity for them to experience the Theatre and this type of teamwork. Their class teachers have

been working hard all term for this moment! We know they are all winners even before they take to the stage simply

because of all the hard work and commitment each student and teacher has shown over the past few hectic weeks. We

We are on our way. Rehearsals are going well and we are adding in a few lunchtime rehearsals of scenes to get things

running smoothly. It is imperative that those students whom have lines to learn that they PLEASE READ THROUGH

THEM each night. We need to start rehearsing without scripts very very soon.

We still have some parents not arriving until after 5:15pm to collect their children. Pease make every effort to be at school

before 5:15pm as staff needs to get home too J

If there are any other students who have not paid their $25 one off payment, could they please do so ASAP as we are

beginning to purchase items for the production.

We are currently finalising dates and will notify you all of these as soon as we can. In the meantime, if there are any

concerns, please contact me via [email protected]

Its starting to take shape and I‟m getting very excited about the next few weeks and seeing what these amazing kids are
