WORSHIP FINANCIAL NEWS
Liturgy and Life by Tim McManus, Pastoral Associate of Worship
The family unit teaches us much about living with others.
The parent, or parent figure, teaches children how to love
and respect others, among other important life skills.
Ultimately, the little ones learn how to cooperate with
parents, siblings, and those met throughout life. Ideally,
parents are the first teachers of the Faith for their children.
Undoubtedly, some readers of this article did not grow up
with a good family experience from childhood to adulthood.
The past cannot be changed, but we can hope and pray that
these children of God may find this good family experience
within the parish community.
Today’s Gospel about the sisters Mary and Martha is not so
much about the latter’s indignation, but about the priority
between two good and necessary actions. As Jesus says to
Martha,
“There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”
In other words, listen to the Word of the Lord first, then take
the appropriate action. All of our liturgies, rituals, and
blessings model this for us. The readings come first,
followed by the appropriate action such as receiving the
Eucharist or a Blessing. Even our prayers before meals
invoke communication with God followed by nourishing our
bodies with food and drink to sustain our lives.
Family. It’s where we learn to listen to the Lord first and
then act. Not only as children, but continually throughout
life.
Special Collection
Solidarity Fund:
Next month, our parish will take up a collection for the
Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. While the Church
in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic
resources as well as pastoral care. Many suffer due to
poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education.
The fund supports pastoral projects that strengthen
communities in their faith and foster lasting peace and
reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and
tension. To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/africa.
Special Collection Reports
Basilian Missions:
Your donations amounting to $2,893.38 is very much
appreciated by the Basilian Missions. Thank you for this
considerate contribution!
Seminary Fund
Last month’s support from our parish for the Seminary Fund
came in the amount of $6,625.65. Thank you all so very
much for making an investment in the future of the Church!
Catholic Radio
Thank you for supporting Catholic Radio with your generous
donation of $1,703.88. This will help spread God’s word
through the airwaves!

Wednesday, there is one hour of Adoration
which includes a Rosary led by the Knights
of Columbus.
Red Mass for Legal ProfessionalsMonday, October 7 | 5:30 PM
All those in the legal profession are invited to a Mass with
Bishop Doherty, followed by dinner and a presentation by
U.S. District Judge and St. Alphonsus parishioner, James
Patrick Hanlon.
The Red Mass is a tradition in the Catholic Church which
dates back to the 13th century. The first Red Mass is
believed to have been celebrated in the Cathedral of Paris in
1245, and thereafter the tradition spread throughout Europe.
The word “red” was originally used to describe the Mass in
1310, because the justices of the English Supreme Court
wore scarlet robes. Over time the “Red” Mass came to have
a deeper theological meaning, with red symbolizing the
“tongues of fire” that descended upon the Apostles at
Pentecost bestowing the gifts of the Spirit.
YM Friday Holy HourAll families of youth in grades 6-12 are invited to join us
Friday evenings in July from 7 - 8 PM in the Day Chapel
of the church for Eucharistic Adoration.
Expect a short message, time for silent prayer, and a
community Rosary. Sitting in front of the Lord in the
Eucharist is where saints are made. Come get holy!
“Defenders of the Faith”Aug. 1 | 6:00 - 8:00 pm | St. Robert Rm.
"Defenders of the Faith" is an open
apologetics night for all parishioners as an
opportunity to engage real-life,
contemporary topics in the world pertaining
to our Catholic Faith.
If you have ever had a question about the faith or Church
teaching; if you have engaged in faith-related questions at
work or school; if you want to better understand the
questions and how to defend our faith in love; this is the
place for you. This will be an interactive evening with time
for questions, small group discussion, and tips and facts on
how to connect with others at the nexus of the world, current
issues, the Church, religion and spirituality.
Contact: [email protected]. Childcare provided.
