A Message from the JSOC Board of Directors: Core Vision Statement: To Live and promote a “Jain way of life” and to grow a non-sectarian Jain Community. The Jain “way of life” follows the core values of truth, compassion, prayer, charity and forgiveness as well as three core beliefs: Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekantavad (non-absolutism), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). Committee Visions (Term 2020-21) Maintain the current programs, activities and major events for anyone interested in the Jain way of life, therefore creating a community which is strong, united, and vibrant. Ensure the purpose and objectives are accomplished as stated in the JSOC by-laws. Communication and dissemination of helpful information and news to members of JSOC Implement new strategies for smoother execution of major events. Encourage all members of JSOC to volunteer for Pathshala. Provide a platform for students during major events and programs, such as those planned by JAINA and YJA (Young Jains of America – which includes Canada). Develop youth leaders amongst the Jain youth in our community by establishing a network to share their experiences with Jain heritage and faith so as to create connection amongst their peers. Committee conduct a feasibility study on converting to a charitable organization status, as this change comes with high responsibility and obligations. We are embarking on a massive exercise to build a community database through which we can communicate to the entire community easily and efficiently. Jai Jinendra and thank you to all of the JSOC families for providing continued support in making our Jain Society of Calgary so vibrant during such a precarious time. JSOC NEWSLETTER

    AUGUST 2020

  • Objectives of a Newsletter: We released our first JSOC newsletter in May-2020 in order to keep our members connected to the community and receive news, updates and information about alternative activities taking place during The Pandemic. We found this immensely successful and plan to publish the JSOC Newsletter on a quarterly basis.

We encourage all families to provide information on any exceptional achievement news such as receiving professional designations, graduations, or even prayers for those who might need our support. We would like to honour our community’s achievements and provide and outlet for encouragement and support for anyone who needs it.

The aim of this newsletter will be to share any and all information curated by you, in the community as well as our Board of Directors. We hope it will benefit all ages and stages of our members.

New JSOC Logo: We are pleased to present our new JSOC Logo designed by Board Director, Rahul Bohra. Thank you Rahul, for combining the beauty of the land we live in with an image that pleases all followers of the Jain faith. We look forward to rolling out this new logo for all JSOC events, the newsletter, and the website.

Community Member Database We are planning a massive exercise to create a member database on the website where each family can update their detailed information. This information will only be used for the purpose of communication and outreach. We will keep you posted of our progress and when it is ready to be rolled out to the entire community.

  • JSOC Pathshala Update: From August 2019 to February 2020, the JSOC offered three different Pathshala sessions that ran simultaneously. From April 19th, 2020, the classes resumed online on a bi-monthly basis. We’d like to introduce you to our dedicated volunteers who teach Pathshala:

    • Payal Gandhi & Hiral Shah - Kids under 6 • Jasmine Shah – online platform coordinator

and Level 1 (ages 7-13) • Vishranti Vakharia - Director of Pathshala and

Level 2 (ages 7-13) • Zankhana Shah (Waterloo, ON) -

    Kahoot game coordinator

Due to online Pathshala a couple of families and their kids from Ontario were able to join our session in Level 1 and kids under 6. Our new 2020-2021 session will start from Sunday, September 6th. This year again it will be a bi-monthly online session until December 2020. We will provide an update on the class format for January 2021. JSOC PATHSHALA IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!

If you are interested in teaching, please contact Vishranti Vakharia at: [email protected]

Pathshala for Adults: Mihirbhai Shah gave great insight into the Bhaktamar Stotra and explained all 48 Gatha in detail, which was welcomed by JSOC members.

Rahul Bohra facilitated lectures on Karma Principles and completed 10 successful lectures. His lectures are based on Muni Kshama Sagar Ji Maharaj’s pravachan. The karma principles helped youth and adults understand Jainism and how it is connected with current life, and future Karma Bandhan.

  • Guest Speaker / Scholars Dr. Jina Shah (USA), was invited to speak online for two virtual discussions titled, “Ahimsak Lifestyle for Health: A Holistic Approach.” The two sessions took place on Sunday, May 9th and Sunday, May 16th. Dr. Shah discussed the ways we can keep ourselves, other beings, and the planet healthy using an approach based on ahimsa and prevention. She discussed the practical aspects of changing our tastes and behaviors and also, for those times that we must rely on supplements, drugs and modern medicine, how we can make the most beneficial choices. Dr. Shah also provided great information on the plant-based diet and it’s benefits to our health and the environment as well as how it relates to the Jain principle of Ahimsa. Dr. Jina Shah Bio: Dr. Jina Shah, MD is a key member of the JAINA organization. She is Board Certified both in General Preventive Medicine and in Family Medicine, with experience in global public health, drug development, lifestyle medicine and the field of bioethics. She is also the chair of the Ahimsak Eco-Vegan Committee. She decided to go vegan 30 years ago for ahimsa and, as she has undergone medical training, learned more about the health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet. She is also trained as a Climate Realities Leader.
