Professional Experience

• October 1979 to 1981 Design Office / Building Site Engineer - Ministry

of public works under supervision of a Superintending Engineer, I was exposed to design in reinforced concrete, timber and structural steel. I was the site Engineer at the Multi-storey Prisons Headquarters Building then under construction. I also undertook the design and site supervision of the 4-storey R.C frame office block for the Government Training Institute Mombasa at the same period.

• 1982 to 1983. Resident Engineer - Malindi Jetty and Sea Walls Project

- Ministry of public works Resident Engineer in charge of day-to-day inspection and approval of the works, site measurements and certification on Site, The Civil Works contract included construction of a jetty and sea walls in tidal zone and had specialized operations like piling, use of special concrete mixes, concreting under water and extensive use of geotextiles as separators. Others include supervision of the underpinning of the Vasco-da- Gama pillar also in Malindi.

• 1984 to 1985 and part 1987.Contracts and Projects Management -

Ministry of Public Works Involved in taking off quantities, compiling bills of quantities, contract documents, tendering, and writing tender evaluation reports for the Lamu Jetty, Mkuunguin jetty and Bura Bridge contracts. I compiled the claims and

counter claims and was the client’s representative at the Lamu Jetty Contract arbitration proceedings.

• September 1985 to September 1986 Post Graduate Training: (University

of Birmingham U.K) Extensive taught courses on soil mechanics, foundations, geology (Thesis on foundation problems of low raise buildings and pavements founded on expansive soils.)

• October 1986 to November 1988. Materials / Foundations Engineer -

Ministry of public works. Involved in site investigations for buildings and bridges e.g. at the new NSSF building and at the Nyayo monument at central park.

• December 1988 to-date Lecturer. University of Nairobi.

Teaching soil mechanics and foundations to undergraduates at the University of Nairobi. Over the same period I have carried out research on suitability of various tropical laterites, weathered rocks and soft rock gravels as road construction materials.

airstrips, High rise buildings, residential & institutional low rise buildings, factories e.t.c.

Soils and Materials for Pavement Design. Extensive exposure in Kenya, fully conversant with MOW design manual (1987). Some experience in Tanzania conversant with Tanzanian pavement design Manual (1999).
