SPORTSMEN’S CLUB OF FORT WORTH
Let’s start the hunt.My son, Brady, and I arrived at the ranch near Glen Rose about
8:30 Friday night. The guys were nice enough to wait for us and theneat dinner, which was great. After some interesting conversation wewere off to bed and to prepare for the next mornings hunt. We wereup at 5:00 a.m. and they laid out a breakfast spread fit for a King. After breakfast we headed to the blind. There were 4 of us in theblind, Donovan Williamson (co-owner of the ranch), Terry Varden(camera guy), me and Brady. After sitting for a couple hours we sawa couple of young bucks. Notice, I said young bucks because thisplace has huge bucks even the young ones are big. We went back fora snack and tried at another stand and saw nothing. Unfortunately, wedidn’t see anything worth shooting all day. Brady and I did have agood time at the breeding pens. We learned a lot about deer. Bradyhad fun petting the fawns and watching a 200 class buck court somedoes in his pen.
Sunday morning found us arriving at the ranch at 6:25 a.m. just intime for the morning hunt. We were running a little late because ofthe rain and we got stuck behind a train for about 10 minutes. We stillmade it in time.
After being in the blind for 30 minutes a big buck walked into thepicture. The camera guy said we needed to get at least 60 seconds ofvideo of the deer before Brady could shoot. Fortunately, the buckgave us about 4 minutes of footage. Brady then got his gun out thewindow and waited for the camera guy to tell him it’s ok to shoot. When he received the ok, Brady squeezed off a shot behind theshoulder and the buck humped up and ran about 20 yards and felldead. It was a typical 10 pt with a split brow tine that made him an11 pt. It was great to finally get to hunt after all the recreating we didthe day before.
After filming the field interview with Brady we cleaned the deer.
We headed off for the farm with the buck in tow and had a veryhappy little TV star boy with me. I must say thank you to Donovan,Terry, Kyle, and the cooks from the Flat Top ranch for all they did forus. They were really very nice and easy to get along with. I thinkBrady wants to be a deer breeder because he spent most of his timeasking Donovan question after question about deer. I asked him,“Can you be a breeder and a hunter at the same time?” His answerwas “Yes.” By the way, Brady’s buck scored a 151 6/8. Pretty goodfor a 10 yr. old. Terry (camera guy) told me he would send someDVDs for us before the show airs. We should get them by the end ofthe month. The show will air between March and June 2005.

Bow Elk of a Lifetime
In 2003, I had the opportunity to bowhunt elk with Lost
Canyon Ranch with Robert Kiesling, one of the owners, and
his brother Johnny. It was the hunt of a lifetime. The ranch is
located in southwest Colorado, in the La Plata Mountains.
Texas may be God's country, but this area of Colorado has to
be a close second. The trail to and from the hunting camp by
horseback travels through the most breathtaking country I've
ever seen--snow capped mountains in the distance, mountain
sides covered in Fir or Aspen, open meadows, and a creek
where trout can be seen from 50 yards away.
The hunting is on foot from camp, returning to camp each day.
We ran into six elk the FIRST day, including a spike that got
within FIVE yards of us. Any elk with a bow is a tremendous
trophy, but on that first day I was lucky enough, and my guide
was good enough, for me to take a great 6x6 bull at 20 yards!
There is a bigger one out there--I know because we saw him
after I shot my bull--300 class. He looked HUGE when he
paused for just a moment 45 yards away. With a bow, my 6x6
was the elk of a lifetime. The week before, another bowhunter
had taken a 6x6, also on his FIRST day hunting! The day after
I took my bull, an equipment failure cost another hunter a 15
yard shot at a 4x5. Can't get much better than 100% shooting
opportunities.
The trip starts at the ranch. Food and lodging are great,
especially for a guy. From there, the horses and tack are loaded
on trailers for the drive to the trailhead. That's where the
experience REALLY begins. The trail winds down the
mountain and through the valley to camp--all set up and ready.
The tent camp is rustic, but comfortable, close to the creek and
looking over a meadow to the mountain. Bring plenty of film
for the camera, the views are something. Jim, the camp cook,
tried to make us gain weight even with us climbing all day, and
he may have succeeded. This is not a luxury hunt-- but the
food is great deer camp fare, and plenty of it. The hunters
share a tent, the guides and cook another, and the third is the
cook tent. There is a great fire ring to cap it all off.
My guide was knowledgeable, hard-working, and didn't spend
the first day proving how much better shape he was in. He
called in three bulls in one morning. He was also a great guy in
camp.
This is a rigorous hunt--lots of climbing, and as camp is at
6500 feet, well, the air is thin up there. Do some walking to get
ready. It does not require you to be a world class athlete--heck,
just look at me, but be prepared to start early, rest when
needed, and be tired at night. My bull was taken at 10,400 feet.
I am not a horseman, but they found a steady gentle horse who
could carried me without incident. The hunt was on National
Forest land, but Lost Canyon Ranch is the only outfitter for
160,000 acres, and we saw no other hunters.
Good hard hunt in beautiful country, good accommodations
and equipment, good hardworking people, lots of elk--nothing
more you could ask for, except a little luck and the arrow
finding its mark, and even that happened for me.
