JEFFERSON PARK UNITED NEIGHBORS

From the JPUNPresidentDear Jefferson Park Neighbors,

Thanksgiving has come and gone and we've all probably recovered from some great meals with friends and families –and plenty of turkey leftovers. The Christmas and New Year's Holidays will be here in a few weeks, and many of us are crazy-busy getting ready for those celebrations too. JPUN has our annual Holiday Party coming up this Saturday, Dec. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sexy Pizza. We've previously held the party at Hotel VQ, but it is now closed and will be converted to apartments over the coming months. Sexy Pizza has graciously offered to host this year’s party and we'll have food and drink not only from Sexy Pizza, but from other local restaurants as well. Bring the kids, meet new neighbors and hopefully, have fun!

We were scheduled to have JPUN Board elections at the General Membership Meeting on Dec. 9, but we have to move that to the January meeting so we can complete our recruitment efforts. Please consider joining our board so we can continue the great activities in the neighborhood, as well as being the official conduit to the city government to express the wishes of the neighborhood for priorities in city services and investments.

There are lots of free activities for the whole family that are mentioned throughout this month's newsletter, so check it all out and plan for some fun nights out for your family during this hectic season.

With my last President's Letter this month, I'd like to personally thank all the hard working members of JPUN's Board and all the dedicated volunteers who helped out with many activities these past two years, especially with our summer concert series. I've enjoyed meeting and working with many of you on other issues that have come up in the neighborhood, including the efforts to limit the Sports Authority signage, some of the zoning issues that have come up, working with some of the great new businesses and restaurants that have come to Jefferson Park, getting the new playground approved by the city, and for some of the great company and conversations with neighbors I've met over a beer or a meal. I'd also like to thank our great officers from District 1 who keep us safe and informed year round, Councilwoman Shepherd for her involvement in JPUN and the neighborhood, our friends and neighbors at the Broncos who support the neighborhood, our good friend Lauren Brockman from Allied Realty Services (developer of 2785 Speer) who has generously and consistently supported our efforts, and many other groups, city officials, organizations and merchants that have also supported JPUN over the years. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Jeff Archambeau

Margo is a two-year-old Terrier mix. Her favorite activity is playing chasewith another dog, but she also loves tohike and take long walks in the neighborhood. She was adopted from the Colorado Prison Dog program, which takes dogs from shelters and referrals – usually unwanted animals.

The inmates work with the dogs on obedience with a few tricks. They do a wonderful job; Margo knows all her obedience commands and is anxious to please. The dogs leave the programwith all their shots, spayed/neutered, teeth cleaned and bathed. There is a short program for the new owners so they know how to work with the dog, and they come home with a sample of the food they eat there and a great leather leash, also made at the prisons.

Margo has been an absolute delight and I highly recommend the program as an option for anyone looking for a well-trained pet. They also have a boarding program, where they will train your dog. The website is easy to find if you Google “Colorado Prison Dogs.”

All copy/photos/advertisements submitted to the Jefferson Park United Neighbors Newsletter will be edited and reviewed by our volunteer staff for style, grammar and content. JPUN reserves the right to refuse publication of any submitted material that does not meet our standards for a positive, informative, educational community newsletter.

FAIR FARE

Help Decide New RTD Fare StructureLet’s face it. Paying to ride transit in the Denver area can be confusing at times. How do you transfer from one bus to another or from a bus to a train? What do all of those light rail zones mean?

With five new transit lines opening in 2016 – it’s time for RTD to simplify its fare structure to make riding across the district easier.

Based on feedback from previous publicoutreach last August, RTD and the CH2MHill team have developed fare structurealternatives. They'd like to get your feedback on these fare structurerecommendations.

Information on rates andcomments can be made at www.rtd-denver.com/fare-restructuring.shtml.

You can attend any publicmeeting being held Dec. 3-11.Public meeting times and locationscan be found on the above website.

Denver Public Works recently renovated many of the sidewalk / intersections around Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium, by rebuilding the curbs and making the ADA-compliant areas “Bronco orange.”

Let JPUN know on Facebook projects that Public Works should consider in Jefferson Park. Some to nominate are the lack of sidewalks north of the 23rd Avenue bridge, potholes, lack of signage, etc.

DENVER POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS

Click it or TicketDistrict One Police Department has received funding to monitor the 26th Ave. and Federal Blvd. intersection and enforce traffic with an emphasis on seatbelt violations. Please remember to buckle up and avoid a ticket.

Drag Racing on District One’s RadarJPUN and Sloan’s Lake Neighborhood Association are working with District One Police Department on the issue of drag racing along Federal Boulevard. If you are interested in more information, please email [email protected] or attend JPUN’s next General Membership Meeting.

Drag racing along Federal Boulevard has claimed a second life this year. In November, a Regis University student died from injuries she sustained after her car was hit head-on by a vehicle traveling 100 mph down Federal Boulevard near 55th Avenue.

In February an 11-year-old boy was also killed near Federal and Colfax by a hit-and-run driver who was drag racing. Drag racing has mostly occurred on Sunday evenings between the hours of 8 and 10 p.m.

District One is reviewing the number of speeding cars and accidents along Federal Boulevard within Jefferson Park. There have been additional accidents within the past year that have resulted in cars nearly crashing through homes. Those reports, along with a D-DACS (Data Drive Approach to Crime and Safety) analysis will provide next steps on how the police will use enforcement, education and engineering to solve these issues.

Special thanks to Commander Paul Pazen, Officer Denise Gomez and Councilwoman Susan Shepherd for their personal attention and assistance with this ongoing safety concern.

DPD encourages neighbors to contact them if you witness any drag racing activity.Bar Shooting at The BeachOn Nov. 22, up-and-coming Denver rapper Kevie Durham, 24, was killed and at least two people were hurt following a shooting at a bar called The Beach near Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Located near Federal Boulevard and 16th Avenue, the establishment has gone through several incarnations since it was once an outpost for the Fraternal Order of Eagles

Tackling the New Year! It's nearly 2015, and for many, that signifies a time to reflect on the past, and to formulate intentions for the upcoming year.

The majority of us make New Year's resolutions with the best of intentions. Unfortunately, we end up disappointed when we fail to follow through. But don’t let that get you down this year. Resolutions can be an awesome tool to help get motivated and stay on track to accomplish your goals. Here are some tips to create New Year’s resolutions you’ll actually keep:

Make your goals measurable. Don’t just say you want to lose weight. Define how many pounds, or even better how many clothing sizes you want to lose. Learning a new skill/activity can also be a great motivator.

Make your goals realistic. Consider what it will take to accomplish your resolution before making it. This will help ensure you are setting yourself up for success from the start.

Make sure your resolution comes from you. Unsurprisingly, the New Year's resolutions that are most likely to succeed are the ones that mean something to you personally. For example, resolving to run a 5K because it's something you've always thought was really cool and wanted to be able to do is going to be a lot more motivating than deciding to lose 10 pounds because your spouse or doctor told you to.

Don't make too many resolutions. As is true with habit building in general, the fewer resolutions you make, the more likely you are to succeed. Building new habits is hard. Stick to just a few, meaningful things and you'll be much more likely to meet all your healthy goals this New Year.

To help with your New Year’s resolutions, CrossFitJefferson Park is hosting a Whole Life Challenge. The Whole Life Challenge identifies areas that almost everyone wants to change, and turns those into a daily game of creating new, healthy habits. This challenge will focus on the key areas of your life that produce real, life-long changes. We will do this as a community--all friends and family are welcome to play together in this motivating game. During the challenge, you'll be given the tools and resources you need to develop new habits and see dramatic results.

Whether you crave more energy, stronger workouts, or more space in your jeans, you’ll establish habits that take you towards your goal without feeling starved or confused.

COLORADO SKI SEASON

What does the Challenge entail?• 8-week game• 4 weeks of guided support in removing sugar from the diet (without withdrawal)• Weekly action steps and practical nutrition advice (that works!)• Access to a private Facebook page curated by a nutritionist• “Go-to” recipes and snacks that will help you replace the refined grains and sugar (guilt free!)• Grocery list/kitchen stocking guide (for guaranteed success)• Eating out/travel guide to keep you on track (while partying)• Access to the body, energy and lifestyle you crave (finally)• Great prizes from neighborhood business!

The Whole Life Challenge kicks off with a Q&A session on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. at CrossFit Jefferson Park. The game will officially start on January 17. Register by December 15 and you will receive $25off the investment fee ($99 regular investment). Registration includes entry into the Whole Life Challenge.

DHA Initiative Joins “Target Cities”in Urban Leadership

The City of Denver and the Housing Authority of the City and County of Denver (DHA) is participating in Target Cities, a two-year partnership of nine development projects across seven North American cities designed to amplify and accelerate district-scale community regeneration and create replicable models for next-generation urban revitalization.

EcoDistricts – the Portland, Ore. nonprot behind Target Cities – announced the partnership as a commitment at CGI America, a program of the Clinton Global Initiative.

The vision for Denver is to transform the entire 100 acre Sun Valley neighborhood, and create a district entity that will oversee and carry on the operation of the created district for years to come. As a Target Cities project, the Sun Valley Transformation Initiative will incorporate the central principles behind the EcoDistricts Protocol, which guides the projects through district organization and governance, assessment, implementation, and monitoring.

The District-wide Goals for Sun Valley include:

• District-scale energy infrastructure (photovoltaic, geothermal, steam, etc.) providing renewable and sustainable energy;

• Wastewater, water quality and water detention solutions;

• And recycling and any other implementable solutions that conserve resources and enhance the lives of its residents.

Additional solutions for Sun Valley include multi-modal transporta-tion options and healthy, locally grown foods are also sought.

The goal is to reduce energy consumption by more than 60 percent beyond local code standards.

A master plan for the area should be created by October of 2015.

This One’sfor the Ladies by Allie DeYoung, Financial Advisor, CFP®, CPA

Women…we’re different from men in a lot of ways, but should our investment and retirement plans be different? Now, for full disclosure—and those who know me won’t be surprised—I support equality, whether it be gender, ethnicity, or who you decide to spend your life with. But despite my personal beliefs, when it comes to financial planning, we are not all created equal. This is an ever-evolv-ing conversation. More women than ever are successful professionals, business owners, entrepreneurs, etc.; however, women often face different obstacles than men in order to achieve financial security. So whether you are a woman or love a woman (spouse, sister, mom, daughter), here are a couple of things to keep in mind when considering a financial plan.

1. ISSUE: On average, women live longer than men but earn less money; therefore, there is a larger chance that women will outlive their money. Women, on average, live about 5 years longer than men and make about 23% less per year, according to studies done by the White House and the Social Security Administration.

CONSIDERATION: Delay receiving social security benefits until age 70 to ultimately receive the highest monthly benefit. Work a couple years longer to grow your nest egg just that much more before retiring.

2. ISSUE: According to the US Department of Labor, women tend to be more conservative investors, they take on less risk in their investments. This can make it a challenge to earn the consistent returns that are necessary to have money grow over time to meet their goals.

CONSIDERATION: Sooner than later seek advice and be involved in your plan. Learning basic investment concepts, time horizon, diversification, and investment vehicles can be empowering and make you feel more comfortable taking the appropriate risk for your assets and time horizon to ultimately meet your goals.

3. ISSUE: Women will likely outlive their spouses. Not only is this emotionally difficult, but can be difficult as you age and need help or care.

CONSIDERATION: Include this scenario in your financial plan. Think about how you’d like to handle this type of situation if it were to arise, whether a long term care insurance plan, an asset-based plan, or relying on children or younger family members to help take care of aging parents.

The simple answer…yes. Yes, women should have different financial plans than men, or at least consider a couple of different variables when planning.

So, as not to end on a total downer, a very positive female “trend” is that women tend to be great caregivers. When I was writing and researching this, a lot of things reminded me of my mom. She’s very intelligent and good at a lot of things, but understanding and being involved in the investments and financial planning is probably, admittedly even, not on the top of her mind.

So, for people reading this who are like my mom or if you know someone like my mom, I just wanted to point out a couple things to make sure these wonderful caring women also take the steps to take care of themselves.
