The Daily News of TV Sales Tuesday, May 29, 2018 JPMORGAN MOVING AD DOLLARS BACK TO TV BENEFITS OF TV: REACH, ROI, CONTENT JPMorgan Chase CMO Kristin Lemkau says the bank is retreating from an all-digital strategy, and that some of JPM’s $5 billion marketing budget is moving back into television. It’s a move that echoes a broader trend—and one this publication reported on last week when a UBS survey showed half of buyers said their clients, who spend more than $40 billion combined, will shift ad dollars toward television during the next 24 months. That includes 10.4 percent who said their clients are making a “major shift” to television advertising. In the survey, TV’s biggest benefits— as cited by advertisers—include reach, brand awareness, ROI and the content environment. As for getting clients to spend more on television, buyers said improved TV measurement would attract more money. But the survey revealed that one issue getting a lot of attention this spring— fewer commercials and small ad loads—wasn’t as big an issue to those surveyed by USB. Lemkau, meanwhile, tells Business Insider the move back into TV is about a flight back to quality—regardless of the fact that viewership is on the decline. “Digital can be the Wild West, and it’s not for the faint of heart, and the metrics are funky and there is fraud and viewability and brand safety, all of these other nightmarish things that we know,” she said. “So we’ve retreated a little bit from an all- in digital strategy and we have gone back to TV.” Lemkau says the financial services company is investing more in live sports and other events on television, as they still generate value. She also says more marketers have realized that “their dollars can go awry” in digital—ending up next to unsavory videos or being viewed by bots instead of actual human beings. This reality, she says, is leading more advertisers to taking charge themselves by bringing advertising in-house and hitting the pause button on digital investments. JPM, according to the BI report, has taken matters into its own hands, slashing the number of sites on which it advertises from 400,000 to 10,000. It’s also developed its own algorithm on YouTube to ensure its ads don’t end up next to questionable videos on the platform. Lemkau explained that she’s no fan of ads being tacked on to the beginning of videos. She doesn’t think marketers should be able to interrupt the viewer’s experience— especially in a digital environment, where they’re just a click away from a vast array of other options. She’s advocating what she calls “permission-based content.” That’s where publishers, brands and agencies work together to create stories that don’t cause interruptions. ECONOMIC NEWS CNN says American companies are pulling in monster profits right now, due to faster economic growth and lower taxes, among other things. Not only are S&P 500 profits sitting at all-time highs, but first-quarter earnings are on track to surge by 24.5% -- the fastest pace since 2010, according to FactSet. In fact, more than three-quarters of S&P 500 companies -- 78% to be exact -- beat earnings estimates. That’s the most since FactSet started tracking the stat in 2008. Energy companies are the biggest winners, due to higher oil prices. FactSet said the sector’s profits nearly doubled during Q1, growing at more than twice the pace of the next closest industry. Meanwhile, Wall Street is also preparing for a change. Profits can’t go up like this forever. Next year’s earnings growth is expected to decelerate to around 10%, according to FactSet.

THIS AND THAT AdAge says Visa is suspending all marketing featuring Morgan Freeman, while TransLink, the Vancouver transit system, said it would be pausing its collaboration with Freeman. Several sources reported last week on allegations that Freeman engaged in inappropriate behavior, including making sexual comments about female employees and creating a toxic work environment at Revelations Entertainment, an independent movie production company he co-owns.....The FCC wants Amazon and eBay to step up its efforts to help combat piracy. MediaPost says FCC commissioner Mike O’Rielly is asking the companies to crack down on “rogue” set-top-box sellers, whose devices allow customers to stream pirated shows. Last week he said in a letter to Amazon and eBay: “I recognize that both of your companies have taken proactive steps to remove devices that are marketed as facilitating piracy from your websites. Unfortunately, despite your good work in this area, devices continue to make it to consumers through your websites.”

TRUCKER SHORTAGE HITS RETAIL America needs truck drivers—another 50,000 of them now, according to the American Trucking Associations. CNBC says they’re needed to avoid a shipping squeeze, one that’s already forcing retailers and consumers to feel the pain. In fact, Amazon says the shortage is one of the reasons it recently increased its Prime membership to $119 from $99 annually. Part of them problem, of course, is the demand created by the increasing popularity of online shopping. Then there’s the undeniable reality that driving a truck is a tough way to make a living: Drivers work long hours, endure stretches where they’re away from home for weeks at a time, and they often sleep inside their trucks. The ATA says the U.S. will need nearly 900,000 more drivers over the next decade to keep up with growth and demand.

AUTOMOTIVE UPDATE Most new-vehicle buyers say the recent fuel price surge will probably not influence their vehicle purchasing decision. Kelley Blue Book’s Current Events Panel study found that more than 20 percent of respondents expect fuel prices to “move up significantly in the coming year,” while 60 percent of respondents reported that it is unlikely that the recent surges will play a part in the type of vehicle they buy. The study also says receipients believe that an acceptable price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.50, and the ceiling for when fuel cost would become a big factor is

$4-per-gallon....Joydrive has a vision for changing the automotive online retail landscape: Become the first nationwide platform that allows buyers to complete their transactions without setting foot in a dealership -- for new and used cars. The website lists new and used vehicles at “affiliated dealerships.” Its year-end goal is to make 50,000-100,000 vehicles available to customers as it expands across the country. 13,000 vehicles will be available within the next two weeks,

says automotivenews.com. By contrast, online used-vehicle retailer (and major advertiser) Carvana has about 12,000 vehicles in its inventory....AutoRemarketing.com says Avis has joined the UsedCarsForSale.com’s classified platform, which touts a more user-friendly marketplace than competing paid-for classified websites that can deliver both expensive and low-quality leads to dealers. Avis joins other retailers Hertz, Lithia Motors, Group 1 Automotive and Larry H. Miller, according to UsedCarsForSale.com. The site claims that it is the only free automotive classified site since Craigslist began charging its used-vehicle retailers about four years ago.... German car-rental company Sixt will offer off-rental vehicles on Mercedes-Benz USA’s used- vehicle site, MBonDemand.com. Mercedes-Benz USA has been selling most of its off-lease inventory digitally through MBonDemand, selling more than 200,000 vehicles through the site in the past four years. But to expand the supply, Mercedes-Benz USA is opening its online marketplace to third-party sellers’ Mercedes-Benz inventory....U.S. new-vehicle sales in May 2018 are expected to increase 3.1 percent compared to May 2017, according to a forecast released today by Cox Automotive.
