Since 2012, JPI Urban Europe has launched annual calls addressing specific areas and priorities in the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, until today more than 70 projects have been funded and 80 Mill EUR granted. The number of national funding agencies supporting the calls and allocated budgets has continously increased

over time. The call “Making Cities work” lauched in 2017 piloted and realised a challenge driven approach with cities as main stakeholders. Cities were involved already in the process of developing the call and as active partners in the projects, ensuring the relevance of the outcomes.

To date, approximately 450 project partners across Europe and beyond are involved in projects funded by JPI Urban Europe calls. Partners include universities, research organisations, city administrations, business and non profit organisations. Implementation of new solutions can often be hindered by institutional and cultural barriers but by facilitating co-creation and sciene-policy cooperation across national borders in projects, the introduction of new urban practices is enabled and behaviour changes triggered.
