Moving Forward
I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every
day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord,
and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall
laud your works to another, and shall declare your might acts.
– Psalm 145:1-4
What a year we have had at FUMC Canyon. We truly are a blessed community
of faith. God continues to work in and through us. It’s hard to believe my family
has been here for 6 ½ years. I look forward to the years ahead with much antici-
pation and excitement.
Below are some of the highlights from 2017.
1. Staff – Our staff is absolutely incredible. We are blessed with an amazing
group of dedicated disciples that serve inside and outside the walls of the church.
I feel like this is one of our biggest blessings. We have had some staff adjust-
ments this year with the movement of Roman out of Adult Discipleship and his bi-
vocational role here at the church. He is currently focusing on preaching, teach-
ing, social media and video for the church. Further, Charlie has taken over the
role of Adult Discipleship along with his Youth Ministry roles. We have been able
to bring on two Youth Interns (Stephen Williams & Carolyn Castro) along with a
Youth Ministry Assistant (Kayla Irlbeck) to help Charlie with his added responsi-
bilities.
2. Congregational Care – We have a great team of people who are intentionally
visiting the sick and those that are home bound. Our “Home Friends” team is a
group of laity that adopts our homebound and makes connections with them
monthly. Further, we have 5 people, both staff and laity, who have been trained
and sent forth to make hospital visits and visits with Assisted Living (Angela As-
bill, Roman Asbill, Rick Enns, Ed Smith and Jane King).
3. Worship – We were able to launch a second traditional service in late August
of this year. This has been one of our biggest goals for the past two years. With
this move, the Modern Service has been relocated in the Fellowship Hall. It has
been amazing to see all of our church jump in and help with this transition. It
hasn’t been easy! But it has been a blessing to so many in our church and com-
munity as we’ve added new times for worship for those who can’t come to an
earlier service. The biggest challenge of this transition has been the rotation of
preaching between Charlie Keys, Roman Asbill and me. It has taken all of us
some time to adjust to. I believe it is the best thing for us as we move forward in
helping us keep our unity. As I’ve said we have “one message – different voices”
or “one church – three services.”
Since we have launched the service our average attendance has increased dra-
matically. Below are some of our statistics since we launched at the end of Au-
gust.
Average attendance since launch – 450 vs. 380 in 2016 (18.5% increase) Traditional Service average – 325 vs. 270 in 2016 (20% increase) Modern Service average – 125 vs. 110 in 2016 (14% increase) We have had year-to-date 191 first-time guests and 105 second-time
guests.
4. Missions/Outreach – Our partnership with the Wesley Foundation has been
awesome over the past several years. We have such a great symbiotic relation-
ship in ministry. We are partnering with them in the Wesley Academy which is
training up young leaders in ministry. Further, we currently have 9 of our young
members who are in seminary.
Our “I Heart Canyon” outreach with other local churches has grown to a capacity

Christmas is here! I love this time of year. It
offers times of reflections, pure joy, amazement, rest,
and total chaotic busy-ness! The lights and decorations
refresh my soul and builds up the joy in my heart. I turn
into the giddiest child this time of year. I’m up first each
Christmas waking everyone else. I can’t wait for the
excitement of everyone opening their gifts. The magic of
Christmas for me is in watching, watching the smiles and
squeals of joy as each present is opened. My challenge
to you this Christmas to sit and watch. Watch for the
smiles and joy! Listen to that voice telling you to stop,
the voice that says you are missing something, the voice
that says the busy-ness can wait, the voice of God!
Now in the same breath as my challenge to
you, I now write about some events that need to be
added to your calendar. These events are not to add
stress or add to the chaos, but they are to help our kids
and us draw nearer to God and build relationships in HIS
presence.

Youth News—Charlie Hello Church Family,
I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas
and is well on their way to a happy new year! I am very
excited to share with you information about two
important events happening in 2018. I would like to
take a quick moment to share with you information
about our youth Ski Retreat and our annual Merge
Retreat.
The Uprising Ski Retreat will take place January
12-15 in South Fork, CO. Our goal with this trip is to
make sure it is not limited to just a ski trip but that it
would actually be a spiritual retreat. The students will
have a great time skiing during the day at Wolf Creek,
but will also have the opportunity to grow and be
refreshed spiritually each evening. Our theme for this
trip is “Whiter Than Snow”. Our guest speaker and
worship will be challenging the students to consider the
purity of their hearts and how their hearts affect their
actions. Please pray for our leaders and students as
we retreat to the mountains and seek the Lord.
The second event I am excited about is our
annually Merge Retreat for our confirmation students.
This year’s retreat will take place February 16-19. The
Merge Retreat is a collaboration between the children’s
ministry and youth ministry. The goal of the retreat is to
use it as a catalyst to begin friendships between the
confirmation students and the existing students in the
youth group. One way we try to begin these friendships
is by including and involving the youth leadership team
(Z Team) on the retreat. The youth leaders will be
involved in group discussion, breakout sessions, as
well as all the fun and games. I am also excited that
this year we are allowing any student grade 6-12 who
is interested in confirmation to participate and be
confirmed. Please pray for Kim, myself and all our
student leaders as we prepare for this important event.
As always THANK YOU so much for the prayers
and support you provide the The Uprising Youth
Ministry. What we accomplish would not be possible
without your help!
Chase the Lion,
Charlie Keys II

Please stop by the Lost & Found cart in Fellowship Hall Kitchen to see if any of those items belong to you. Anything unmarked left on cart by January 8th will be
donated away.
FEEDING THE HOMELESS
It is not always possible to calculate the right amounts of food needed for a large meal at our church and we sometimes end up with lots of leftovers. I have now started working with an organization called "Amarillo Brown Bag Runs" who daily takes food to hungry homeless living on the streets of Amarillo. They will gladly take any large amounts of leftovers and distribute to the homeless. For more information, or if you or your class/small group would like to get involved volunteering or donating, please visit their facebook page: https://
www.facebook.com/AmarilloBrownBag/

Important Tax Deduction Information In order for you to claim a deduction for contributions you make in to the church in 2017, we must receive your contribution by the end of the year. Contributions that you make in 2018 cannot be deducted on 2017’s tax return even if the check is dated this year. There is one exception—a check that is written, mailed and postmarked 2017 can be deducted this year even if it is not received by the church until 2018. Our church will be following these rules in issuing receipts. If it is important for you to have your gift deposited by the church in 2017 please have your check to the church office no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29. If you are making a contribution via our online app please make sure you make the contribution 3 days prior to December 29. where we are going to have to change the way we do
it! It is amazing to see what God has done with this
ministry and we look forward to see where he will lead
us.
We are in our third year with adopting the Canyon
Intermediate School as our local mission. I have seen
incredible fruit born of this as the staff and administra-
tion truly appreciates our care, prayer and concern.
5. Camp NOVA – We had our second year of Camp
NOVA at Ceta Canyon. This camp is designed for 7-
12th grade and we doubled our numbers this year
(305 total). We see the camp continuing to grow next
year and anticipate having 400 campers for summer
of 2018.
6. Prayer – As one of the core values of our church,
prayer has been an important part of how we have
gotten to where we are. At the beginning of the year I
purchased 21,000 marbles and we committed to pray-
ing 21,000 prayers by Easter. Every time the following
prayer was prayed, people would put a marble in one
of the many jars that were around our sanctuary.
Those marbles were then put on our altar in the sanc-
tuary where we could see the prayers increasing each
week. I saw much fruit from this as our congregation
intentionally focused on the power of prayer.
It has been a blessing to be in ministry with all of you
here at FUMC Canyon.
In Christ,
Rick Enns
Sr. Pastor
